The CASH ISLAND Memorial
This week we travel down under to Victoria Park to take in the Cash Island Memorial Stakes. The race is named for Cash Island, a multiple winner. This six furlong turf Stakes for 3 year olds and over will be run on the turf course. This $85,000 stakes sprint looks like another Australian party. Let’s take a look:
#1 RUBISON THE SECOND trained by hillbilly – The only Aussie bred in the race this 5 yr old horse is a former claimer that won the Lil Bro Stakes Sprint last time out impressively. The 101 sp figure matched his personal best and he is capable of snapping one off every now and then. He may have stepped up just a bit in class this week.
#2 P I BOOT trained by helenb – This impressive Awesome Again colt is a 5 times stakes winner as a three yr old. His $260k in winnings have made him the #8 rated turf sprinter among the youngsters. This grey beauty has run a bit rough his past two, even finishing 10th to Rubison 2 in his last outing. He certainly has the heart and the talent but may not be on top of his game for this one.
#3 MAJOR TOM trained by dkyoung – This Catrail 5 yr old has earned close to $600k and more than a dozen wins. He won his last stakes five back and always seems to throw a good race. With G Adler in the stirrups this duo may be a force to be reckoned with during the CI Memorial.
#4 STORM PEGASUS trained by perks2 – Fusaichi’s namesake 4 yr old colt is making a name for himself with wins in three of his last five. He won the Western Academy Stakes impressively last time out and looks to be on top of his game. He will be looking here to add to his 17 win figure. It might be tough to stop him.
#5 DEPUTY’S LASSO trained by fortune2 – Five year old Deputy’s Lasso is a Raise a Govenor offspring that will probably be the pacesetter here. He’s been having a bit of trouble holding on to that lead lately. He had a rough outing last time out, not getting the pace and finishing well back. He’s got a nice jockey in N Hartel and maybe between the two of them they can get it straightened out.
#6 CELTIC BITER trained by matt219 – This five year old is taking after his Daddy and having a Boys Nite Out. He will be trying to teach the youngsters a few lessons but it seems that may be getting tougher every race. He had a nice second last time out when dropping down into an allowance race but the competion will be much tougher this outing. He can still pop one occasionally and this might be the week.
STORM PEGASUS looks like the class of the Cash Island Stakes and I think he wins easily. I am going with a longshot for second as I think PI BOOT would like to show the old guys what he is all about. MAJOR TOM will be right there for third.
Good luck to all runners!
