The Devil’s Slide Shows Up in Kentucky

It may have been the 10 furlong distance of the race, it may have been that some of the horses had Labor Day plans, but it may well have been the fact that that Mistress of Mayhem Devil’s Slide is in the race that limited the field to 6 other intrepid young ladies in the Sun Dancer, a Grade I co-Feature in Kentucky for 3 year old fillies at 10 furlongs on a firm turf course..  Her last time out, in Smackdown, she had a nearly 9 length lead fall on her head, finishing 2 3/4 lengths back. The good news is that it was far and away her best speed effort to date, and if she resists the bounce from it, it could be continuing a very nice form trend for this lightly raced girl (her last 3 races have been speed figure increases over the previous race). She will probably try to relax on the lead and try to hold off the favorite down the last quarter. If the favorite shows any vulnerability here, or gets stuck in traffic, this is the one to beat.

Three lifetime starts, with a 1-1-1 record, this girl is looking like a better and better horse every time out. The problem here though is experience and development. This class of filly is probably too much for this girl to handle just yet. But we will hear more from this filly before the year is up.

She definitely has the class to race with these (she is a Graded Stakes winner), but her top speeds, even in the wins, are substantially lower than the favorite has (she has yet to break triple digits. That said, she is moving back to her best distance, and she is a solid stalker. Should definitely be in the mix here, but will need her best lifetime race and/or an off-race from the favorite if she is to cross the wire first.

This one has had most of her success on dirt, and in fact her best race was on a sloppy dirt track. She is moving back to turf after a long absence, but seems a bit overmatched here. However, if the favorite doesn’t fire, or gets in trouble in traffic, this is the other deep closer in this race, and a big pace would help her. Lot of ifs, but that’s why they run the races.

Class and speed numbers are the concern for this filly. She has never faced graded company before, and her lifetime high speed figure is 92. This field is probably a bit too accomplished for this filly.

She has the breeding (Kingmambo x Seattle Slew), she has the class (multiple graded winner), and she is even in top form (3 wins in a row and 5 in her last 6). She’s a closing machine, including being the very filly that ran down Tess Carlisle in the Smackdown race mentioned above, and there figures to be an honest pace here. The trouble with stone closers though, is if their game is off, or they run into traffic, there could be trouble. But with these, it looks like only a sleepy pace or Devil’s Slide herself can keep this filly from running her record to a scary 10-2-1 in 18 races.

A very nice record (15 of 17 lifetime starts in the money), but this is also her first graded stakes start. The speeds are decent, but she will need a bigger number than she has ever run before to keep up with some of these girls. Has a decent versatility in tactical speed, but will probably press the pace some.
