G2 Fence Fryer Stakes
Welcome all to the first of two graded races here at California this week, the 9th running of the $150,000 G2 Fence Fryer Stakes. The race is at 7f and is open to all 3yo fillies and this years addition will see a field of eight contest the race. All but one running has been won by a filly posting a SP exceeding the 100 mark and it looks as if this trend must be adhered to win here this year. It is an interesting mix of pedigree that has taken out this race with both bargain breeds and bluebloods sharing the honors and the group assembled here this year reflects that trend with some common and some not so common sires involved.
Here’s how they will line up.
PP #1 – TAKE IT ON THE RUN(MD) – DOMESTIC DISPUTE x SKIP TRIAL x AIR FORBES WON (kingcub) 5/1
From the CVBear Racing Empire comes this filly who has hit the board in all of her eight runs including a stakes win, two stakes placings and a G3 placing last time out at 6f. The field last time out was not as good as other graded fields and she must step up a little from that performance to hit the board here this week. She is an on pace runner who will be able to sit just off the lead this week with the 7f a well suited trip for her. Although she has a consistent record, she has only just surpassed the 100k mark and must prove that she can mix it in a good field this week.
PP #2 – GIMME VINCE YOUNG(KY) – GHOSTZAPPER X A.P. INDY X FORTY NINER (super23) 7/1
After proving herself at stakes level first up this year she has been belted at graded level. Her run two starts back at G3 when 5th was good as she rattled home from over nine lengths behind to improve to four lengths. This week she will drop back to 7f which will be the first time in nine starts she has not run more than 8f. I really must applaud the move as I think she will be a better sprinter than miler. We can discount her run last time out where something went horribly wrong or she got a wicked bounce but she is better than that and hopefully back to her best this week.
PP #3 – DEVIL IN MRS JONES(KY) – SMARTY JONES x DANZIG x SECRETARIAT (sera) 7/2
Inetersting career to date for this filly who has seven of fourteen races with just a single stakes win. She has three stakes placings and last time out she placed 3rd at G2 level posting a SP of 97 at 7f. She was fading at little in that when beaten by some good runners and must relax off the pace slightly this week to really take advantage of her pace. She has really developed this year and is now ranked at 37 in dirt sprint division. Will run a honest race and should be ITM.
PP #4 – PURE LIFE(IRE) – BACHELOR DUKE x MORE THAN READY x MR. LEADER (jdawq11) 6/1
Was slaughtered last time out when attempting to lead at G2 level fading badly to finish eight lengths behind Devil In Mrs Jones and six lengths behind Fetish. She is yet to win at stakes with four placings and shouldn’t push the winning horse here. Having said that, discounting her last run she has been in modest form and if she can get back to those performances she may run a good race. The fact she hasn’t received a winners check in ten starts worries me, especially coming into graded company.
PP #5 – SPEEDOMETER(KY) – STORM CAT x GONE WEST x BUCKPASSER (simsters1) 9/2
Straight from the Lennbrenner empire comes this filly who in only five starts has a stakes win 7f two runs back and last time out backed it up with a stakes placing at 6.5f. Great breeding that sees her inbred to Secretariat 3SX4D and looks as if the trip will suit and could possibly push on a little longer. Should probably have won last start and did run home nicely but she may want more to recover the gap as she has lost both her races when getting back just a little to much and not staying in touch. Would love to see this filly ITM as I think she may turn into something very good.
PP #6 – FETISH(KY) – CRYPTOCLEARANCE x DANZIG x STORM CAT (super26) 9/2
Hit the board eight of ten starts with just a single stakes win to her name to date that was on the end of a three race winning streak that started this year. Finished 4th behind the 3rd placed Devil In Mrs Jones in the G2 Pebbles Flintstone Stakes two starts back and finished 2nd in a restricted stakes last time out by just a hand. She is a runner who likes sit a little back in the field and run home from there and she must therefore ensure that she does not get too far back this week. Her game dam was a seven time stakes and one time G3 winner and finished ITM at stakes level eighteen times. Should go well this week.
PP #7 – WOETTE’S STATUE(IRE) – STATUE OF LIBERTY x KRIS S. x HAWAII (plstable) 6/1
She has hit the board in ten of her twelve starts including wins in three of her last four outings, all at stakes level. Last time out in 3203 on rain affected dirt, she placed 3rd at G3 level beaten by a pair of graded winners but finishing ahead of other graded placed and graded winners. That was at 8f and whilst I do not necessarily agree with the drop back to 7f, I don’t think it will hurt her too much. She prefers to lead her races but she can also sit just off the pace and move up gradually to take the lead and the race. She must step up a level if she is to place here and if she can do that, who knows?
PP#8 – IN A SPIN(AUS) – SPINNING WORLD x VICTORY GALLOP x EL GRAN SENOR (grtnotion) 7/1
After four stakes wins and three stakes placings from seven starts on turf as a 2yo earning her over 200k, she has now been switched to dirt. This switch in comparison to her turf career has been relatively unsuccessful with just two allowance placings and a stakes place from four runs. Breeding says she certainly wants more than 7f with a trip at 10f possibly more favorable, as blood from Nureyev, Fappiano and Buckpasser is throughout her pedigree. Will need to run quicker than high 80’s to get near this field. It must also be noted that she has predominantly raced in small fields and the quality of this should account for her.
Good luck to all and may your horse be swift!
