From  the Hipodromo Da Gavea  racecourse in Rio de Janeiro,  Brazil we bring you the G1 Equinics race,  the Cliff ‘Em All.  This event is for three year old fillies going ~1800 meters (or 9 furlongs for the stateside fans) over the firm turf oval.  A maximum,  overflow field of twenty runners are entered here,  looking to claim the winner’s share of the $1,000,000 purse on tap,  and for the prestige and glory that goes hand in hand with an Equinics victory.  The winning connections will own the spotlight during the trophy presentation ceremony following the race.
.
This race is in tribute to Clifford Lee “Cliff” Burton (February 10, 1962 – September 27, 1986) who was an American musician, best known as the Bassist for the American thrash metal band Metallica from December 1982 until his death in September 1986.
.
On September 27, 1986, Burton was killed in a bus accident in Kronoberg County, a rural area of southern Sweden, as the band was touring in support of the Master of Puppets album. Burton was replaced by bassist Jason Newsted in 1986. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Metallica on April 4, 2009. He was selected as the ninth greatest bassist of all time in an online reader poll organized by Rolling Stone magazine in 2011.  Thanks to sponsor Metallinut for the preceding info about the tributee.
.
This race is a long shot player’s dream,  with twelve of the twenty runners listed at better than 15/1 odds.  We have a duo of G1 champions,  a  G2 victor and five G3 winners in the field.  Will one of the more accomplished lassies take the gold,  or will the long shot lovers be celebrating after the race ?  Three year olds are still developing,  so either outcome is a possibility.  Let’s take a closer look at ” ‘Em” in post position order and see how they stack up.
