Breeders’ Bowl Race Recap
A fun fiesta of races in Kentucky this weekend with the best of 2015 runners competing in the annual Breeders’ Bowl races. There were a few favorites that were victorious and a few horses that were longshots and reaped large benefits. The following is a recap of the top three runners in each event.
DIRT MARATHON
Trainer Lenny kicked the Breeders’ Bowl races off on Friday with a win coming from Little Column B who got off to a very slow start but rallied to win this race as the favorite paying $10.80 for the win. This was the 10th career win for the Admire Moon bred 4-year old. Ideal View followed in the shadows of the winner, getting away even slower at the start of the event but was a trying 4 strides behind the winner. Taking the show position was Shanken Gimlet who ran close on the front end throughout the race but was out muscled at the end by the top two.
FILLY & MARE SPRINT
After running a pair of races with 110, Patizan Belgrade fired things up and rocketed off a 115 for trainer Theduke and a career best for the lady. This filly is the only stake winner out of sire Passion For Gold and her late run from the backside of the pack rewarded betters with a $28.90 payout. Desert Cowgirl was a pricey 17/1 and came close missing by a three-parts of a stride to the winner mounting her own late run. Alberta Front, the favorite in the field, ran in the mid-pack in the early going and found some daylight to nose out Frosty Mae for the show spot.
DIRT MILE
Hiding in the middle of the field in the early half of the race was Dutch Henry who picked up his first career Grade 1 win. He had only one other G1 race where he tried and failed in a Derby lock race earlier this year. The Curlin bred winner, owned by the Irisharse racing stables, paid $29.20 in his sizzling 117 speed race. Union Rails had the fattest odds in the race at 35/1 and tried to wire the field but got beat in the stretch still taking a nice second. K’s Gorgo ran behind Union Rails but came up a long neck short of the second spot finishing third.
FILLY JUVY TURF
Favored Primetime Dansil got the top spot and won her sixth career race in seven starts and notching her best speed of 101, not bad for this 2 year old out of Dansili. SS89 racing stables is undoubtedly proud of her accomplishment and so are supporters who collected a nice $16.30 at the window. Dizzari put in a fine run but could not get to the top to finish second. House of Romanov was the second betting choice in the field and put in a late effort to get third place.
JUVENILE TURF
A very tight finish in the Juvenile Turf with a photo requested by the stewards. Ripping Star would officially be rewarded with the top spot winning by a head with a $21.80 win payout. Ripping Star ran in the mid-field cluster before bearing down on Orpheus Cadet who lead every step of the way except for the final one when they crossed the line. The winner belongs to Punting34 barns and is sired by Sea The Stars and notched off a career best 103. Finishing third was favorite Redoute’s Dawn who came within a ¼ stride of getting the top honors.
TURF SPRINT
Concluding the Friday Breeders’ Bowl race card was the Turf Sprint that saw VT light, who stalked the front end runners, light up in the stretch and gun to the line with a career best speed of 114. The child of More Than Ready earned her 10th career win for trainer Flagdown with a three-quarter stride win and paid $19.50. The steepest odds in the field belonged to Whizzing By who at 19/1 tried to outbest the winner but came up short with a very fine drive. The third spot went to Nothing is Sound who was in the rear half of the field and charged hard to get third.
DISTAFF
Saturday’s card kicked off with the Distaff and 22/1 longshot Miss Mo went straight to the front and never looked back and cruised to a three stride win. This was the eighth win for the three year and the 112 speed was a career best. She’s owned by Kashbarn stables and is the daughter of Uncle Mo and lit the tote board with a $46.20 payoff. Second choice Silver Shot K could not catch the winner but her late speed empowered her to rally from eleventh to the second spot. Megastorm was within striking distance of the leader throughout the race but just did not have it in her to make the move when it was needed but was the third best in the field.
JUVENILE FILLY
A return to the favorites winning came in the Juvey Filly where 3/1 Swapsco Kitty did not disappoint. The Scat Daddy bred two year old won her third straight Grade 1 race and notched out a career best 101 speed. Owned by the NYCowbay racing syndicate, and winning by over two strides, paid $8.80. Destiny Wings ran second and was able to overtake the front runner but could not overcome the winner who ran from midfield late. Destiny finshed second while the front running Damasquerade could not wire the field but survived to get third.
FILLIES & MARES TURF
A $33.50 payoff awaited backers of Smart Impactor at the wagering windows. The seven time winner launched a charge from the mid field and drew off to over a two length win for Dixiedotco connections. The Deep Impact bred filly ran a 111 speed, a few ticks shy of her best and now has a three race win streak going. Baaad Kitty was not that baaad at all as she shook loose after passing the half and made a very game effort through the stretch finishing second. The Biggest Impact, at 15/1, came close to having a major impact as she ran from last and circled the field knocking off a 13 stride deficit to only four by the time she crossed the line in third.
JUVENILLE
The crowd was on it’s feet as they watch the pace stalking Deadmoney Cadet make his move at the same time that Vrantium moved out of his midfield spot as they raced through the stretch. It would be Deadmoney Cadet getting the edge in the end and paying out $20.30 for the win. Trainer Cadet’s More Than Ready bred colt set a career best speed of 101 in the race and racketed his fourth win. Vrantium came up a half stride short as the second selection in the race, finishing second. The third betting choice, Blank Space made a nice late move to finish in the show spot, only one stride behind the winner.
MILE
The highest speed of 118 came in the Breeders’ Bowl Mile and the beneficiary of that was Stillwatersrundeep. This three year old out of Dansili had run that speed once before and now has nine career wins. He had to fight early at the front end and eventually drew out to a two stride lead, but the Pogook owned horse had to fight again to finish on top by a half stride in the stretch run. A nice $22.70 was the win payout here. Queen Named Barb looked sharp when she made her move in the stretch but ran out of time settling for second. Pye in Motion cleared a jam of horses late and earned the show position.
SPRINT
Racing at its best was seen in the Sprint as two horses who were close to the lead battled in the stretch run and in any good finishes, a photo at the wire would determine the winner. It would be John5539’s racing stable that owned The Kragle who paid $29.30 for the win. The son of War Front scored with a 115 speed, besting his previous 114 speed that he recorded in his last start and picking up his seventh career victory. Getting in the picture taking at the wire, but deemed to be second was Finally Ready. The horse cutting all the fractions and finishing third was Misapportioned getting beat by a stride and a half.
TURF
Even better than the finish in the last race was in the Breeders’ Bowl Turf where three horses would cross the line in a tight battle for top honors. It would turn out to be the horse with the highest odds in the race, Wilhelm Schmeck (26/1) who would light the board with a $54.00 payout, the highest of all Breeders’ Bowl races. The winner would rally from the thirteenth position, some 18 back at the half and slicing this to 12 off the lead by the ¾ pole to win it by a nose on the line. The 114 speed matches his career best speed and this Pivotal bred colt is owned by Padrebri stables. Two others were in the photo and both had launched mid-field attacks. Fasting and Prayer came hard and would get second spot missing by a nose while favorite Cardiff Castle would end up third about a neck off the line.
CLASSIC
The featured $6,000,000 Classic entertained a super larger field of 20 runners and this 10 furlong event would see another nice payout in the end of $37.90 from the winner who fired up things from tenth to win by two strides. Fake Honeymoon is the second Breeders’ Bowl winner from this year’s events for trainer Lenny who watched the Bernadini colt take this race with a career speed of 116. Favorite Anderw’s Impact had a long way to go as he got away last in the field and had to pass every horse to get to the front end but could not get past one other horse so it was second place he would finish in. Bayou Bullet also marched late and finished third, 2 ½ strides behind the winner at 17/1 odds.
Real nice job on this recap, Ken. Was hoping you would do this job. Thanks!
