Mambo Wildcat sets Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf stakes record
Kentucky– In one of the most impressive juvenile performances in recent Sim memory, jockeymax’s Mambo Wildcat simply bowled over the Grade 1 $1,000,000 Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf field.
The freshman son of Forest Wildcat galloped to a 3 3/4 length victory in the 1 1/16 miles turf championship. His extreme final time of 1:42 1/5 was easily the fastest juvenile time of the day and crushed the stakes record by 2/5 of a second.
Dancing With The Star
Jockey P Cadigan assured a smooth ride for racetime favorite Mambo Wildcat. The duo broke about midpack and kept within the colt’s normal few length striking range behind the leaders.
Mambo Wildcat took command at the 7/8ths pole, putting away deyoto’s fellow stalker Paycheck(IRE). By that time, those two colts had opened up several lengths on the field. Cadigan urged Mambo Wildcat home under a hand ride, crossing the line with a 104 SP#. Paycheck(IRE) ran very promisingly to hang on to the runner-up spot. The Montjeu(IRE) colt had previously won the Flying Saucer(G3) over the Breeders Bowl distance.
It was a long gap of six lengths back to the show spot. Seacadet’s closer The Fast Layne made the most of the situation rallying for the third prize, clear over davemac’s Bad Beat(GB) and corza2’s Piercing The Pack.
Bid For Sim Eclipse
Now a perfect 3-for-3 over the grass, Mambo Wildcat commands the 2yo Turf Colt Classic division by over 130 points.
The colt actually began his career over the dirt, winning his Maiden Special Weight and Allowance bows. He then missed the photo in the Abstract Juvenile(G3) and finished 4th in the Hoserhead(G1) over 6.5 and 7 furlongs respectively. It’s surprising that jockeymax took the risk of switching surfaces — any other trainer probably would’ve been satisfied with Mambo Wildcat’s dirt sprint efforts, looking forward to two-turns.
Instead, Jockeymax placed Mambo Wildcat in a Michigan listed turf stakes. The colt dispatched the 6 furlong race easily and made his two-turns debut six weeks later in early October’s Knick Knack Juvenile(G1). Mambo Wildcat toyed with the Knick Knack’s field and grassy 1 1/16 miles. His 5 1/4 length winning margin turned a lot of heads, making him the prohibitive Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf favorite.
The Knick Knack field included many who subsequently competed on BB day. In hindsight then, it’s probably no surprise that Mambo dominated the Breeders Bowl. Regardless, it was a gorgeous performance, numbering among the best on a great championship afternoon.
The ‘Wildcat pushed his record to 5 wins from 7 starts and $1.05-million in earnings.
Marvelous Momma
Mambo Wildcat is the second foal out of the amazing broodmare, Crimson Pirate. The Kingmambo mare won over $1.8 million dollars through three years and 40 starts for jockeymax stable. Her best season came in 2004, when she won the Queen Ascot Stakes(G1) and G.S.R Mares(G1), the former being one of the premier miler events for turf distaffers. She retired B-rank.
Crimson Pirate’s first foal Northern Pirate (by Belong To Me) is also a Grade 1 winner this season. Northern Pirate ran sixth in the Breeders Bowl Turf Sprint Saturday. Quite a unique accomplishment for this mare to not only get two runners into the BB as well as 100% Grade 1 winners.
