Breeders Bowl Juvy Turf Fillies May be Best 2 Yr Olds!

The Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly
Grade 1 Stakes
A mile and one sixteenth on Firm Turf
$750,000
Two Year Old Fillies
This is liable to be one of the best races of this years Breeders Bowl. The hopes and dreams of the crowd holding their tickets on this race pale in comparison to the Owners and young Fillies running in it. Horse for horse the fillies here look much better on paper than the turf colts. Three of these ladies have already beaten the boys in Graded races this year. A win here can certainly lead to great things in the future and the future looks bright for this field. Many will go on to breed future Breeders Bowl horses. We have some first time trainers this year and it has to be a real treat for them. In asking around the Stable, most of the trainers when asked point blank picked Dahliyev to win but I must point out that most trainers and owners are notoriously bad handicappers! There are some really beautiful and talented fillies here so let’s take a look:

Trainer Catahoula is going to be plenty busy this year with five horses to be saddled in the Breeders Bowl races. He is a seasoned vet though with seven former BB runners and two winners including last years horse of the year HORSEHOE BAY who will also be running later today. His stables are based in Texas and is where the name of this beautiful cream colored filly comes from, former University of Texas quarterback Vince Young. Both the namesake and the filly have proven to be successful in their early careers. This filly has won two Graded Stakes in a row and has shown improvement every time out. I was at her last race, the Palms Outward GIII where she looked particularly impressive. In the KYHorsemen Debutante, she beat MADAM ALLY and TRIBAL ODYSSEY, both in this race. A late closer, jockey Harzheim, who is one of the best needs to make sure that he doesn’t hang back too far before kicking it in to gear. Catahoula wouldn’t trade with anyone else in this race but is hoping for a DelPenn sweep along with both KEVORKIAN’S AVENGER and BUDA FOR A DAY.

After two previous second place finishes in the Breeders Bowl, trainer Vicki (Topicount) is still looking for that elusive first BB win. She is confident in her filly and likes the chances of her Louisville, KY based stable in gathering that first win here. With a four race win streak that includes a win in the GI High Flyer Stakes against the boys, who is to argue. She had an easy tune-up last time out and should be well rested and set up for this race. They are overjoyed to have Gossett holding the reins as he always seems to come up huge in the big races and formerly was in the saddle for this trainers Middle Jewell winner FLY FOR BUDA. This is the second successful offspring for broodmare VICKI’S GAL and she was bred with the successful Dayjur x Storm Cat cross in mind. Once again, we have a deep closer from the inside post which can be a dicey proposition but they are confident that this girl can handle it.

Another busy trainer this year will be Las Vegas based Chops27(Lenny) who has seven entries in the Breeders Bowl this year. He is particularly proud of this chestnut filly who has run well but not dominating so far this year once she turned to the grass. Her best race to date was last time out in the GII Wolfmother where she closed well down the stretch and beat two others in this race, a hard charging AND JESUS WEPT and also TRIBAL ODYSSEY. An interesting side note, this filly was bred from sire/broodmare ODE TO LENNY who was bred when this trainer originally lost a bet of credits to Zewango and was later bought at the auction and turned into this prized youngster. You wonder who Zewango is rooting for! This girl likes to stalk the leaders and finish in the stretch. One of my favorite jockeys, Kentucky is in the leather and will bring her home.

This is the kind of horse that makes these Juvenile races interesting. If you throw out her one race on an off track, she has five wins and then a near miss in a GII her last time out. That includes three Stakes wins and nice SPFs. She just missed in the Wolfmother last time out when she may have started a bit late from way back to catch LENSHAFT. She has stayed here in Kentucky to train for this race and has the same jockey up in Sherman who should know better when to kick the filly in to gear. This is certainly the top horse in TheProfit7’s stable and he has great confidence that his girl is ready for this race. They hope to have the other horses weeping at the finish.

Trainer Lenny3 believes that this is probably the best two year old he has ever had in his nearly three years as a trainer. That is something to say as he has three Breeders Bowl runners and five Graded winners from this New York based stable this year alone. It is easily the best start he has had in a stable. This filly has three wins including a Graded and a near miss in another Graded race in her four races this year. Stretching her out last time out proved to be beneficial as she ran her best race with an 89SPF and beat the boys in the Grand Critter GIII. She seemed to really enjoy the extra real estate and that bodes well for this race. This will be jockey McClendon’s first time aboard but his eleven years of experience should help as well. This trio is awfully tough to bet against as she has certainly done everything right so far.

Trainer Piccolo87 is hoping for his second Breeders Bowl winner after CASTERLY ROCK won the BB Sprint last year and is one of the favorites to repeat this year. He also had PUB CRAWL who was one of the top two year olds last year. This years entry for the Tucson, Arizona based stable is named for the main castle in George R. R. Martin’s fantastic fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire”. She was brought along slowly this year with only three races in her first five months. She has progressed nicely and continues to improve every time out capped by her win in the GIII Booker T Handicap last time out where she beat some of the top ranked turf fillies. Piccolo87 likes his filly’s chances after her first time at a mile in that race and thinks the extra distance may actually be to her advantage. They have one of the best holding the reins in Small and are looking to compete here.

With a three race win streak going, including two straight Graded wins, this pretty light grey filly is one of the favorites in the race and with good reason. Trainer Brabant from the stable based in Spain is hopeful that he can repeat last years victory in this race with his filly JACA. His biggest worry is that with the shipping in of his filly from Europe and the slightly shorter rest than he likes for her, she might not be as sharp as she sometimes is. If she wins, she will have the rest of the year to rest so he is giving jockey Givens directions to give her all he’s got and let her do the same. She is the by far the most successful of broodmare BRABATA’s three progeny and hopes to increase that success.

The filly with the intriguing name is looking to avenge her only loss of the season last time out. I was at that race and she was hard charging at the end and passed everyone except for DAHLIYEV who finished a length and a quarter in front. MADAM ALLY was also in that race. Before that race she had won five in a row with improvement every time out. Trainer TheAvenger, known as one of the funniest people in the racing game has to be encouraged even by that second place finish and will give instructions to jockey Child to start the charge just a bit earlier this time or make sure that he starts out ahead of DAHLIYEV. This is the fifth and by far the most successful offspring for broodmare AVENGER DANZIG. I’m sure she is proud of this girl.

Trainer KYClocker3 had to be holding his breath all week until post positions were drawn as his was the final filly to draw in to the race. That is certainly not to say that she is not deserving as she is already a Grade I winner in her four race career. He has to be a little worried that she will end up being a sprint champ before a route contender though as she has run two consecutive Graded races at a mile and was rather unimpressive in each. She also finished behind several horses in this race in those two and will have to really step it up to contend here. She has Ledwith in the stirrups and his win percentage and enthusiasm may help but as this is his first year riding, a more experienced jockey may have helped more.

Even though the Chicago, Illinois based Pegasus stable has been around since way back in week 75, this will be the very first Breeders Bowl entry saddled by the trainer. That certainly makes for an exciting time but he is realistic about her chances as well although he certainly believes that she belongs in this group. She has yet to run over an 80 SPF but she hasn’t been pushed in her races and may not have needed to. She has run two successful Stakes races against the boys and could be a handful for these fillies if she finds her breakout race. This will actually only be her third race on firm turf and the last two were the aforementioned Stakes races. She has the “other” Harzheim holding the reins and his magic hands could provide the impetus for that break out.

Coming to the Breeders Bowl for the third time from his Australian based stable, trainer Battlers has the highest hopes this time with his chestnut filly. She has never finished lower than second in her five races and has won three in a row coming in including a Stakes race against the boys last time out with a really nice 87 SPF. She has shown steady improvement each and every time out and Battlers isn’t worried at all about the distance as she has proven to always be strong at the end and ran a mile or longer in each of her last three. She tends to race just off the speed and jockey Caves will be instructed to position her just off the pace again and make her move on the turn. She has been flying a bit under the radar and this may be the time for her to shock the world.

Trainer SAFRace5 will be flying in from his South African based stable to watch his prized filly with quiet confidence. It will be his first entry in the Breeders Bowl and he can’t wait to join the party in Kentucky. His filly has raced in three straight Grade I’s and though didn’t win was very competitive in each with a fourth, third and second place finish. The last two were at a mile and she seems to like the extra distance and may even like this length a little better. She is certainly one of the two most successful offspring of lightly used sire ALMUSHTARAK and is the first offsping of what promises to many for broodmare MACHITRICAL. SAFRace5 knows that she will have to step it up to win this race but expects her to be in the firing line when they turn for home and anything can happen from there.

Here is the filly that they are all talking about this week. She has only been in three races for trainer Chelseydek, but has won all three with some of the top speeds for a young turf filly this year. Last time out she made a mockery of the field in the Filly Grand Prix G1 where she defeated both KEVORKIAN AVENGER and MADAM ALLY who are in this race. She looks to be able to come from behind or just off the pace equally well and has run all three of her races at a mile. First year jockey K. Ledwith is up and has had almost as much success as the filly he will ride in the race. I was at the Filly Grand Prix and I must say I was tremendously impressed by this filly and believe that she may be tough to beat here.

| 5 | 2 | 1 | 1 | Theatrical | Forestry | Mr Prospector | Smokey Coon |
Trainer Baracoon feels that the juvenile turf fillies is actually a much tougher division than the boys this year and that may be true evidenced by the fact that his filly is one of three in this race to win Graded stakes races against the colts this year. Even with that win, she is still in double figured from the Morning Line and that shows just how tough this field is. She is on a bit of a short rest this week but has improved every race and with continued improvement could pull an upset. Baracoon actually feels that this girl will be even better as a three year old but thinks she has a good chance here. Smokey Theatre is a granddaughter of probably the most famous ‘available to everyone’ broodmare in the game, Smokey Prospector. When retired broodmare breeding started, Smokey Prospector was bred to Forestry, and the result was Smokey Coon, who was graded placed on the turf. Smokey Theatre is the first baby from Smokey Coon. With this success, you can bet there will be more.

The thing that can really determine the outcome of this race is what happens at the beginning. There is not a lot of early speed as it sets up with Lightseeker probably going to go to the front. After that there are a couple of stalkers and it will allow her to probably set the pace. If she can keep it fairly slow she may have enough to hold off all of the deep closers. The way I see it, I have BRABASONG finishing fifth. I think that she may not be at her best for this race with all of the travel and the short rest for her. I saw VY THE QUARTERBACK ‘s last race and she may have enough to win this but I have her in the fourth position. I’m choosing URBAN QUEST to burn up the stretch at the end but finish just a bit short in third place. That leaves two horses that could not only battle it out here but may set up a rivalry that continues for some time. I think that with just a bit more experience DAHLIYEV would probably be the one to beat here but with LIGHTSEEKER able to set the pace she should be able to hold off all of the late arrivals and cross the wire first. These two horses may turn out to be truly special in my book. I can’t wait to see the first chapter!
Good luck to all runners!
