Mesquite Wants a Breeder’s Bowl Spot

Mesquite Wants a Breeder’s Bowl Spot

North Korea – Topping the card this week will be the $65,000 Mighty Ms. Quinn Bonanza.  A group of seven older fillies and mares will travel the mile and a half distance over the grass in quest of fame and fortune or maybe a Breeder’s Bowl berth.  This race was named after a 7 YO mare by Sea Hero who won five of 30 starts.  She is the dam of one foal to race that has six wins from two to four.  Here is a look at the field.

Breaking on the fence is Im A Chick Now (6/1) who is a 4 YO filly by Event Of The Year.  Trained by Mark88 she has won four of her 18 races and two of her last eight.  She was a closing second last time out in the 11 furlong Lagunilla against the favorite of this race Mesquite.  This race is a furlong further and she will be trying to turn the tables.

Post two will hold Mesquite (8/5) the morning line favorite.  A 5 YO mare by Black Minnaloushe she is ranked # 20 in her division and is trained by the infamous Conniecpu.  With 15 wins from 39 starts she has earned almost a million dollars in her career.  She has won five of her last eight, including the Lagunilla, the Briska Bonanza, the Dusty In A Ridge, the Alone Steer and the Grade III, Tabitha Bewitched.  Wear and tear could hit at any moment but so far she is looking good.

Sweet Sunshyne (5/1) is a lovely big mare by Theatrical.  Trained by 375stud, this 5 YO has won eight of 33 including the A One Memorial, two back and finished third last time out in the Renee Era.  She seems to be in an up form cycle and bears watching.

Hellafied will saddle West Around Mile (12/1) an 8 YO daughter of Jim Nui who has won eight of 50 starts.  This old lady seems to have come into her own for this trainer as she has won four of her last eight, albeit at a much lower class level.  She can handle the distance and horses don’t understand class so she could surprise.

PJ Total Quest (5/2) is the #17th ranked older mare and this 5 YO by Elnadim has won nine of 39 starts, the same number of starts as the favorite.  Trained By Osstable she is a very nice mare, and if you throw out her two horrible performances over an off track, she has been second or third in her last eight, including the Grade II, Yabba Dabba and the Grade III, Tabitha Bewitched.

Wizbyzews will leg up an underachieving jockey on his young 3 YO filly, Tete Morningrise (19/1).  By Montjeu she has four wins and has won four of her last five including three in a row.  She likes longer and her rider might need to shake her up early to get part, but she is on a roll and could be tough.

On the outside is Dahomey (5/1) a 4 YO daughter of sprinter Mr Greeley.  Trained by Rafita she is ranked #21 and has won 10/31 starts.  This young filly is looking for a Breeder’s Bowl spot and may be the one to beat.  She won the Gory Blue and was first last time out in the Renee Era.  She is an up and comer and will be competitive here.

This race is devoid of speed but someone will have to show the way.  It will be interesting to see who.  Good Luck to all.
