PICO PEQUENO Beats the Slop in First Grade One Win
The Margarine Stakes
Grade II
A mile and one sixteenth on Sloppy Dirt
$250,000 Purse
Fillies, 2 years old
The mud and slop was the story as much as anything in the Margarine Stakes here in Ontario this weekend. It sometimes appeared that they were running in a huge vat of Margarine after several days of hard rain at the course. Longshot Brazilian bred PICO PEQUENO ran nearly a perfect race from just off the pace and caught a badly tiring GIMME VINCE YOUNG in the stretch and won rather easily.
Trainer DB certainly knew what he was doing when he threw this big filly out of broodmare SKELLY SKAPOSWKI and Sire PICO CENTRAL into her first Graded race. She has now hit the board in all five of her starts and has amassed earnings of over $180k. This was her first off track and first time longer than six and a half as well so DB has quite an adaptable lady that looks like she do most anything asked. My props as well to jockey Ebner who had been struggling all year and who I unceremoniously threw under the bus in my preview. He did a masterful job of guiding this girl around the sodden track.
GIMME VINCE YOUNG jumped out to the early lead and was clearly the best in the field until the top of the stretch when it appeared that the heavy slop took it’s toll on the young filly. She fell back but was able to hold on for third to both the winner and WINDREAVER who came from way back in 9th place to weave through the mud wrestling and finish in the second position.
It looks like DB has quite a special horse in the stable and will have to pick and choose the way through the Graded circuit for her. It sure is nice not worrying about backing off of those tracks where rain is forcast! No rainy day blues for this duo.
Good luck to all runners!
