Six Seeking First Stakes Win

Welcome to Ireland for this week’s overnight stakes, The Mambo Sal Special. Juvenile colts will be racing 7.5 furlongs on the turf for a purse of $85,000. We have six entries this week, all looking for their first stakes victory. Two thirds of the field, however, is already stakes placed. Let’s take a look at the entries.

On the rail at 7/2 is Dumpster Juices(Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar(Ire) x Dynaformer) owned by mightandpo. He ran on an off track in his debut, finishing second, and followed that up with an easy win on a firm surface with a 68 speed figure. Moving right up in class, he finished third in his stakes debut, improving to a 69 speed figure. He’ll need to move forward to place higher here, but has top jock Z. Kentucky(22%) which should help him out.

In post two at 8/1 is Consolidator Cielo (Consolidator x Captain Bodgit) owned by ohiovalley. It took him a bit longer to get his first win, breaking through in his fifth start with a 67 speed figure. He also moved right into stakes, running third with a 71 speed figure behind undefeated star See My Baby Jive(Ire) in Virginia. He is the first stakesplaced offspring for freshman sire Consolidator (Storm Cat). A. Reed(15%) would love to make him the first stakes winner.

In post three at 7/2 is Tons Of Talent (Buddha x General Assembly) owned by grade1win. This striking light grey colt lived up to his name in his last start, breaking his maiden with an 81 speed figure after a pair of average runs in the sixties. Buddha has sired three stakeswinners already this year, all on turf, so this guy is in good company. N. Schreiber(5%) isn’t the greatest, but if Talent runs like his last race, it won’t matter.

In post four at 6/1 is On Ya Mate (Erewhon x Trempolino) owned by weejunior. He won his debut with a 60 speed figure clear back in February, and has been raced sparingly since then, appearing in three stakes races. He finished second by a nose in one of those, in Hong Kong in July, running a 70 speed figure. He has improved in each start, running a 71 last time out, missing the board by only 1/4 length. He is the top offspring of freshman sire Erewhon. N. Bruce(10%) is his jockey.

In post five is today’s favourite at 8/5, Lone Communion (A.P. Indy x King Of Kings(Ire)), owned by stormcat55. He has won both of his starts, a maiden and an allowance, both in France. His speed figure improved ten points between them, with a 77 in the mile allowance. There’s not much that can be said about his pedigree, it is top notch. The only question worth asking is, will he run outside of France? The lovely E C Doyle(10%) believes he can.

Rounding out the field at 4/1 is Geri Fizz (Geri x Cee’s Tizzy) owned by theschnoo. He’s never finished worse than second in four starts, winning a maiden and an allowance so far. After a career high 75 speed figure in that allowance, he moved up to stakes, running second with a 74 speed figure in the same race that On Ya Mate ran in last time out. P. Jetter(8%) may not be the best choice, but this colt is definitely a contender.

That is our field. Despite the fact that none are stakeswinners yet, we have quite a diverse field. Can the undefeated Lone Communion step up once again and remain unbeaten? Will Tons Of Talent repeat his last performance, or regress to his previous form? Or will one of the other four, the ones who are already stakes placed, move up to become stakeswinners? We’ll find out on Saturday. Good luck to all the runners, and may they all come home sound.
