Number 1 Ranked Mare Krishna(IRE) takes on Puppet Regime, boys
The Longstickgoboom Stakes
Grade II
A mile and one half on Firm Turf
$300,000
All horses, 4 years old & up
We have a small but powerful field here with the number one ranked mare getting a big challenge. It should be an excellent race so let’s take a look:
| 1 – PUPPET REGIME | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/5 | Wrecks2 | 23.3% | J.Bradley | 15% | 112.6 | 98.4 | 11 |
(KINGMAMBO x NIJINSKY II x MR. PROSPECTOR) This four year old chestnut colt has hit the board 12 of 16 times and an amazing nine of those are wins. A Grade I winner with over $1.5 million in earnings, he could be the one to beat here. He has looked good lately with five top two finishes in his past six races. He lost by a head in the John Henry GI Classis last time out and he and trainer Wrecks2 would certainly like to avenge that loss. Jockey Bradley is in the irons and has been hot all year. A formidable team here.
| 2 – PEPE’S PIPES | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7/1 | Dundey5 | 14.1% | T.Cooper | 13% | 100.6 | 96.1 | 53 |
(SINGINGINTHERAIN x IRON x SLICK SLEW) A five year old with more than a million in earnings and almost half of his 22 starts are wins. None of them have been this year though and it has been a rather disappointing year for he and trainer Dundey5. A third was the best in the past six races and last time out he finished fourth in an open allowance race. You hate to think that he is on the back end of an illustrious career but the hand writing is on the wall.
| 3 – EMPIRE SHAKER | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17/1 | AlmightyMi | 10.7% | J.Tomasello | 4% | 99.1 | 93.6 | 145 |
(EMPIRE MAKER x SWAIN (IRE) x COX’S RIDGE) A switch back to turf for this four year old colt. He has basically had a disasterous year after a sparkling three year old campaign. Trainer AlmightyMi has to be pulling his hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with this colt who has only finished better than 6th one time in his past seven races. It won’t help having Tomasello in the saddle as he has been battling his own demons this year. All in all, it would be a major surprise to see it all come together in this race.
| 4 – DANCIN IN SEATTLE | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6/1 | Eliza | 18.8% | B.Bentley | 12% | 106.5 | 98.3 | 6 |
(DANZIG x SEATTLE SLEW x FAPPIANO) After an impressive start to this year including a Grade I win, this five year old has leveled off, even trying a disasterous trip on the dirt at 13 furlongs last time out. That run may have stretched this horse out some though and made him more ready to face the competition. That is obviously what trainer Eliza had in mind for her big brown horse. It may help him to get back on track and he is in the capable hands of jockey Bently who knows a thing or two about come backs.
| 5 – KRISHNA(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2/1 | PaceMan2 | 16.7% | A.Craig | 24% | 105.8 | 100.9 | 1 |
(THEATRICAL(IRE) x KRIS S. x NASHUA) Just when you thought she might be starting to slow down, this six time Grade I winner spins out six wins in seven races, mostly Graded Stakes. That’s why she is carrying the number one ranking among older turf mares. Trainer PaceMan2 has been doing a fantastic job of putting her in the right spots with the right training and this time has convinced this tracks top rider in Alan Craig to guide his prized mare around the track. It appears that they are ready to take on all challengers.
| 6 – SURGEON TUBES | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3/1 | BigRama | 14.5% | L.Anderson | 9% | 101.8 | 98.8 | 94 |
(ROUSILLON x BE MY GUEST x NEVER SO BOLD(IRE)) It’s hard to go against 17 of 23 in the money and this five year old horse just keep getting it done. Four of those top three finishes are from this year including a second in a GII. Trainer BigRama thinks that his pretty chestnut horse still has some races left in him and there is no discussion anywhere that he doesn’t still have that big heart that pushes him into the top tier. This may be a good spot for him and he always has liked the outside post.
Morning Line = 1-5-6-4-2
Yoss Tipsheet = 1-5-6-2
Paz Picks = 1-5-6-2
Lots of question marks in this race but I like PEPE’S PIPES to finish fourth. It’s hard to count SURGEON TUBES out of the top three so I won’t with a third place finish. That sets us up for the top two and they are so close you can’t fit a credit card between them. It is so hard to pick against KRISHNA but it may be time for a changing of the guard so I am going to choose her to hold on for second by a neck. That leaves us with PUPPET REGIME who is red hot and looks like the horse to beat.
Good luck to all runners!
