Barb’s Blues Band to Play Sweet Music at Longchamp

The Why You Buggin Stakes
Grade III
Five Furlongs on Firm Turf
$100,000
Fillies and mares, 2 years old

A bunch of really nice looking fillies that are starting to show their real two year old colors makes this a very interesting race. It looks like a race full of energy, especially with the names of “Steam”, “Oil”, “Footsteps” and “Flyer”. Let’s take a look:

1 – STEAM FORWARD(AUS) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
12/1BestOBene30.0% B.Wu 23% 56.1 55.6N/A

(CHARGE FORWARD (AUS) x SAKHEE x SEATTLE SLEW) Still looking for that first win, this big filly needs to really up her SPFs to compete here. She hasn’t run faster than 56 although that was on an off track. Trainer BestoBene3 is trying to get her jump started here and has one of the tracks best jocks in the leather in Wu. He certainly knows how to get the best out of juvies and that may help.

2 – S R DAMN OIL ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
27/1DTown10.3% G>Walcott 8% 55.6 55.6N/A

(LUCENCE x KENNEDY ROAD x SUMMING) This pretty chestnut filly won her one and only outing in a claimer. Trainer DTown certainly saw a spark of something in that race and decided to give her a spin on the Graded trail. Jockey Walcott has been struggling this year and may have problems in that this filly seems to like dropping back and may get trapped with this inside post.

3 – PUBLICITY MACHINE(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
7/2Ossy325.0% D.Coulthard 6% 68.6 66.7N/A

(SWAIN (IRE) x KINGMAMBO x SADLER’S WELLS) A nicely bred filly that is also looking for her first win. She has a third and a second with nice improvement and solid SPFs in the high 60’s so she appears to belong in this company. Trainer Ossy3 has a 25% win percentage so he knows where to place them. The inside post should help as she likes to get after the lead from the break. Speaking of breaks, jockey Coulthard could certainly use one here as he has had a rough year to date.

4 – SEEKING IT ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
24/1Girra13.0% E.Wood 6% 63.2 63.2N/A

(SEEKING A HOME x HIGH KICKER x ARTS AND LETTERS) The morning line is giving this undefeated filly much respect with her 63 SPF win in her debut. Trainer Girra was heard to mention that was fine with him and allow the other horses to get the pre race accolades if he can do the talking after the race. Another that looks to get out front in a hurry from the inside so we may have a couple vying for the early lead.

5 – BARB’S BLUES BAND(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
7/2JakeMatt512.8% J.Ventura 15% 62.0 62.0N/A

(DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) x LEMON DROP KID x ALYDAR) Ventura will be holding the reins for this filly with the musical name. He told me that he is excited about this mount and the opportunity trainer JakeMatt5 is giving him. He knows his horses and this one is undefeated in her one and only when she stalked the leaders then caught and passed them in the stretch. Look for improvement in this filly from that outing and that may contend.

6 – FOOTSTEPSONTHEROOF(GB) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
7/1Zeco725.9% B. Thedog 12% 60.8 60.1N/A

(FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND (GB) x EL PRADO(IRE) x NASHWAN) Second time stakes action for this beautiful charcoal filly. She finished fourth in a small field in her last outing after a win in her maiden race. She took a slight step back speed wise which is the kind of thing that makes trainers like Zeco7 crazy. He is used to winning and can’t accept it when a young filly like this goes in reverse. He has put Thedog in the saddle this time who always has a way with young horses and should help things out.

7 – FLYING MARG(AUS) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
7/1Dowelly218.3% S.Graff 16% 70.1 65.321

(FLYING SPUR(AUS) x FUTURE STORM x BROAD BRUSH) This Aussie bred filly is hard to figure as she has won most of her earnings in two owner restricted races. Although they were large fields, you just never know about the competition. She did show nicely in her last outing, a 2nd in the Jello Hanna Handicap Stakes but that was a small field. Hopefully trainer Dowelly2 has a better handle on this filly than I do and with Graff and his hot hand in the saddle, this filly should be competitive.

8 – MT.MEDAL ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
7/1GrayWolf8.1% B.Head 10% 82.3 70.9N/A

(MEDALLIST x MT. LIVERMORE x ROYAL ACADEMY) After two sub-par races in the mid 50 SPFs, this nice looking chestnut filly threw and eye popping 82 SPF last time out and won easily in a Maiden restricted race. If GrayWolf did something special in training between the second and third race he isn’t talking but there is plenty of talk around the stables trying to figure out what got into her. Jockey Head jumped at the chance to ride this rocket and is capable of guiding her to the circle again.

9 – THE GREEDY(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
5/1Ossy221.4% B.Lugosi 9% 79.8 62.4N/A

(INDIAN RIDGE(IRE) x IN THE WINGS(GB) x GULCH) You usually expect a nice increase in SPF between the first and second race of a two year old. Three to eight points is the norm and sometimes you will see as much as ten. How about a 34 point jump for this filly? You have to give trainer Ossy2 credit for getting this girl ready for her second race although she still barely missed out on the win. She will still be looking for her first win here against this tough competition.

10 – YASAWA FLYER ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
6/1Joe33316.2% J.Lennon 2% 65.2 59.956

(GREEN DESERT x EL CORREDOR x NIJINSKY II) This filly out of broodmare JOLLY JUMPER is undefeated in two starts. She won so easily in her last race that jockey Staples pulled her up down the stretch and practically walked across the line. Trainer Joe333 knew then that it was time to move her up to the Stakes level. She will carry jockey Lennon this time but he has been truly struggling this year. Hopefully he can overcome that and keep this filly’s streak alive.

Morning Line = 3-5-9-10
Yoss Tipsheet = 8-9-3-7
Paz Picks = 5-3-8-10
This is a really tough race to pick as there are so many fillys that made huge jumps either forward or backward in their speed figures in past races. I guess I like YASAWA FLYER to finish fourth. I may regret this but I worry about being able to repeat that big speed last outing so I’m taking MT.MEDAL for third. I like PUBLICITY MACHINE to still contend but come up short in her bid for her first win. I believe that BARB’S BLUES BAND has enough to outlast this field and capture the win.

Good luck to all runners!
