Cream Rises to the Top Among Juveniles!

The Coventry Steaks
Grade III
Six Furlongs on Firm Turf
$100,000
All Horses, 2 years old

This is an exciting time for these owners and horses. We are still early in the two year old campaign and the cream is starting to rise to the top. What better place for the cream to rise than here at Ascot. We have some really nice looking youngsters here so let’s take a look:

1 – MAGNIFICENT HERO(GB) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
6/1Ildottore36.0% T.Moss 15% 69.5 67.070

(FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND (GB) x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x CAPOTE) This chestnut colt by freshman sire FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND has become the top rated colt from his offspring this year. He likes to come from way back and won his first race after two near misses in his last outing for trainer Ildottore3. This will be his first try at the Stakes campaign but his SPF’s look as if they will allow him to contend in the upper classes of two year olds. This will be the first time inside and that may affect him but with Moss in the saddle, it shouldn’t much matter.

2 – ALADDIN SANE(NZ) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
13/1DKYoung10.5% M.Antoni 9% 68.7 68.728

(ZABEEL(NZ) x CATRAIL x PHONE TRICK) The 28th ranked turf two year old colt has just missed being undefeated by coming in second last time out in the Bright Buster Memorial Stakes. This Zabeel offspring has been looking good for trainer DKYoung and loves to stalk the leaders from just off the pace. He likes the inside post and knows what to do from there.

3 – STEP ASIDE ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
15/1GoIIllini26.9% W.Wahls 7% 66.9 63.7N/A

(QUAKER HILL x VICE REGENT x STAGE DOOR JOHNNY) This QUAKER HILL out of RENEE colt has won a couple of claimers in a row and has decided to take on the Stakes boys. He looked very good in those two outings, his first two on grass and with a little bump in the speed figures could contend here. What a rags to riches story that would be for trainer GoIllini. Jockey Wahls has really been struggling this year and needs a winner.

4 – PANDA LOUCO(BRZ) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
11/1WarChyld24.2% R.Williams 14% 68.3 68.3N/A

(LEROIDESANIMAUX (BRZ) x ECTON PARK x LION CAVERN) Brazilian bred by the freshman sire with the unpronounceable name, LEROIDESANIMAUX, this big brown colt showed what he was made of in his first outing with a win in fine fashion. Trainer WarChyld is hoping that this colt is something special and will continue to improve in this two year old campaign. This is probably a good spot for him as the company has a nice mixture of challenges for him. The Morning Line may be overlooking this colt, especially with Williams in the irons.

5 – ECHO ECHO ECHO ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
6/1BuckSplash15.7% D.Viergutz 10% 68.5 68.5N/A

(WAR CHANT x NUREYEV x BUCKPASSER) We certainly have some interesting names in this race, race, race. Is there an echo in here? This WAR CHANT colt out of ENCORE, who was a multiple Stakes and Graded winning mare went from the outhouse to the penthouse in trainer BuckSplash’s stable when he switched from dirt to the grass last time out. He improved dramatically and won going away on an off track with a good SPF of 68. It will be interesting to see how that all translates out this weekend.

6 – BLUSHING TARA ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
22/1MikeJoyce21.2% J.Ackland 7% 62.4 58.5N/A

(STAR PROGRAMMER x KAYF TARA (GB) x BLUSHING JOHN) This colt certainly has nothing to blush about as he has three finishes on the board in his three races. He won his maiden in his second race and just missed in the Boundless Republic Challenge Stakes in his last outing. His SPF’s haven’t been up to top quality two year olds and he took a step backwards last outing which may have trainer MikeJoyce a little worried. This colt is really trying to find himself and this could be a tough spot.

7 – REALLY INSWAIN(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
6/1WTAS1024.4% J.Dyson 13% 68.8 68.8N/A

(SWAIN (IRE) x RAISE A NATIVE x NASHUA) You’ve got to love the name of this Irish bred colt by SWAIN. You’ve got to love the way he took charge while moving down the stretch in his first and only race as well. He was in fifth at the end of the turn and weaved through the field to win rather easily. Trainer WTAS10 saddles nearly 25% winners so you have to believe that he has this colt trained and ready for his second attempt. He is in the capable hands of jockey Dyson as well.

8 – SPEEDALERT(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
3/1Plunk19.0% M.Day 18% 67.3 67.3N/A

(THEATRICAL(IRE) x GONE WEST x SEATTLE SLEW) One race and one very impressive win for this well bred colt. Trainer Plunk has to have been waiting on pins and needles looking forward to this race to see what the colt can do against the Stakes class two year olds. I have no reason to doubt him and if he can show natural improvement in his second outing, look out! Plunk has a nice percentage and knows how to bet his youngsters going. I’m betting on this trio if you include top jockey Day.

9 – COLOUR OF PURPLE ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
7/1Corza33.5% G.Brown 4% N/A N/AN/A

(RAINBOW QUEST x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x NUREYEV) ”I’ve never seen a purple horse, I never hope to see one…” This colt isn’t actually purple but may have caused trainer Corza3 a few purple bruises from banging his head against the wall trying to figure this horse out. He started very strong with a win and a 70 SPF then took a big step back in his second where he didn’t contend at all. He finished second in a small field last time out but didn’t really impress with a slow SPF. He may be better here but has lots to prove.

10 – Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
21/1Sharp291212.5% P.Harzheim 24% 71.3 68.911

(KADABRA x A. P. DANCER x POLISH NAVY) Interestingly named chestnut colt that I understand got his name late at night during breeding. Trainer Sharp2912 may have been asleep at the wheel that night but hasn’t been since then with this colt. The training has been impeccable as he is undefeated in two races including the Elk Siefert Handicap Stakes last time out. He improved nicely with a 71 SPF and loves to get out front and fend off all challengers. His breeding may be bargain bred but his heart is pure gold. Good speed, undefeated and the tracks top jockey makes this my long shot of the week.

11 – GO HARD(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEEDRANK
5/1Roberto20.5% J.Wesselman 16% N/A N/AN/A

(DOYEN (IRE) x GONE WEST x LYPHARD) We have a filly ready to take on the boys and this Irish bred by way of DOYEL, another freshman sire may give them all they can handle. She had a sizzling 75 SPF in her last race to win by nearly two lengths after a strong close for third in her first race. She did seem to like the five furlongs better than this distance so trainer Roberto is giving her a good test. Fillies sometimes develop a little faster than the boys and she could be very tough here. Wesselman holding the reins will help out.

Morning Line = 8-11-1-5-7
Paz Picks = 8-10-1-7
As tough as it is with these youngsters, I like REALLY INSWAIN to finish fourth. I hate to put MAGNIFICENT HERO down this low as I really feel he can win but I will have to settle for third. A real long shot at 13/1 that will probably be up front all day, I like Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z.Z to upset a few in this field for second and that leaves Irish bred SPEEDALERT to hold on for the win. The cream rises to the top again.

Good luck to all runners!
