Morgadio – A Name to Remember

It was the acid test. An up and coming three year old, facing the starter for just the seventh time, stepping up to graded company for the first time, and taking on several of the most proven colts of his age group in the Great Fishing Hole Stakes-G3 in Mexico. Remember Morgadio came into this with something to prove. Once he’d hit the front in his previous runs, he’d never been headed. He kept that record intact this week. Beaten out of the gate by inches, jockey Mi Jones gave him a furlong and a half to settle properly, then a touch more reign to edge ahead of Toxicsuperfreakout, who had actually got the better at barrier rise. Eclipse award winner Halfaworldaway had also jumped smartly and searched for the lead, but once Remember Morgadio put his nose in front it signaled the end of any concern for connections, Jones always had Remember Morgadio under a firm hold and rated him to perfection as he set about increasing the lead steadily to almost two lengths, and holding the official margin of a length and three quarters all the way to the wire

Crypto Flow settled two and three lengths off the pace, mid-field, and worked home solidly. He never looked a winning chance, but refused to stop trying and was rewarded with a well earned second

Mr Ap Cat Bg raced handily, a couple of lengths off the pace and stuck on well, missing second only after the judge examined the photo.

Northern Blast was the only runner to make noticeable ground on the winner, coming from well back for fourth, he may have made the race interesting had he had another furlong to travel.

Halfaworldaway was up there early, but his fading effort poses more questions than it solves for this one-time superstar.

Giant Run held his ground, passing a couple of tired horses

Glide Scope was handy early but couldn’t run on

Toxicsuperfreakout won the jump, but was soon pressured by the winner and faded.

Vena Came and Thane raced midfield and stayed there

Future Dancer, Tortured Vision and Senior Year were rearwards throughout

Northern Jones tailed off early and was in the hands of the vet as this report was being prepared.

Remember Morgadio is a three year old son of Storm Cat / Morgadio (Galileo / Kingmambo). Morgadio was a gender-altered male Grade 2 winner of eight races from 44 starts, and like his offspring was raced exclusively by zielissimo. This was Remember Morgadio’s fourth win from just seven starts and elevates his earnings to above $120,000. He ran the 6 furlongs in 1.09.4 and returned a speed rating of 103. Ranked # 141 in his class before the race, this initial graded victory elevates him to # 45

zielissimo is a well established stable populated by young horses, with Benasque, at four, being the oldest runner in the barn. The yard has been to the races on 684 occasions, and has landed in the winner’s circle 94 times. Remember Morgadio is the leading earner in the stable and this week the trainer landed a double from four starters, with debut two year old filly Activia (Cat Thief / Buscand Oro (Seeking the Gold / Theatrical)) scoring impressively in Puerto Rico
