Blue blood baby girls go at the Spa
By ITCH It’s no secret we love our TVG here in Gallipolis, Ohio. One of our favorite shows on there is the Quarters, broadcasting races from Los Alamitos, Calif. A lot of times on there, especially when you see the juvenile races, you’ll see a trainer named Paul Jones with three and four horses in the same race. Sports fans, witness now for your entertainment Wassie’s Paul Jones imitation, as he sends out three of the 12 fillies in Saturday’s $30,000 OUTBACK NICOLE MEMORIAL, a six-furlong test for baby fillies. In odd twist, all three of Wassie’s girls are 7-1. Like his brother said, what are the chances? With the absence of form to go by, we can see how it would be hard for Drunken Morning Line Oddsmaker Charlie Hoops to make a morning line. It’s also hard for a BTB staffer to find much to write about. Maybe we can find some pertinent stats for these babies. Perhaps the most pertinent statistic for a newly-bred horse is the cost. Normally, we run through the contenders in order of stakes points, but being as there are no stakes points in this race, we’re gonna try something different. Taking stats here in Gallipolis on Thursday morning just before 9 a.m., we have calculated what the BP cost would be to breed each of these horses at this hour. (Of course, you may notice the article itself was not completed Thursday morning, but we digress.) We will rank these fillies according to what they would have cost to breed on Thursday morning. Not too many bargain breds in this field. The bluest of the blue bloods in here is RASHEEKA for Ts1442 Tom in his julie stable. Looking at Woodman X Seattle Slew X Mr. Prospector, you have 1,055 points, the only one in here over 1,000. As yet unraced, this one would seem to be better suited to a route race on the grass as opposed to a dirt sprint, but you never know. The julie barn is having a solid year, with seven wins at a 13.5 percent strike rate. Second most expensive is VASSARLEAN for new Simmer greenappl2. With Saarland X War Chant X Chief’s Crown, you have 976 points in this one, which have paid off to a small degree already, with a come-from-behind score in her maiden win this distance. Greenappl2 is a new outfit off to a very hot start, winning 11 of 47 races so far. The win at the distance suggests contention for this baby filly. At a cost of 933 points, Wassie’s ROAR TO VICTORY G is the third bluest blood in the race. As yet unraced, you have Roar X Forestry X Deputy Minister here, which seems to suggest a fast, early-developing filly to me. Wassie sent the mare of this filly, the Grade F Victory Forest, to Roy last year to get TRIGGER’S GIRL G, who won a stake as a 2yo. Bodes well for this one, I’d say. Fourth most expensive was SLOW ROLL for swcracing, at 887 points (Mineshaft X Deputy Minister X Mr. Prospector). This one came flying late to win her debut by a head, beating a full field of 14 at 5.5 furlongs. That’s a nice race, and she comes from an old-timey, very tough veteran Sim barn. Swcracing has 77 wins and 465 wins under the belt, for a solid 17 percent career strike rate. That’s getting er done. At 829 points, MATUTA MATER is no cheapie for the teaco barn (Cat Thief X Gulch X Phone Trick). This breeding just seems to shout fast 2yo sprinter, and it sure seemed like in that first race when this filly won going 4.5 furlongs. We would tend to favor the filies in here who broke their maidens at longer distances, but as proven by our opinion in this column of the eventual winner last week, what do we know? Teaco’s been winning races for a long time in this Sim, with 70 victories from 483 starts. That also is getting the business done. At 807 points and only sixth most expensive in here is W VA HERE I COME G (Arazi X Sadler’s Wells X Best Turn). Now, do you suppose Wassie was maybe thinking of this race when he bred this one. You can be sure he has winning intentions with this filly with a name like that. She looks good, too, with the 73 speed fig in the debut tops in the field. She came rolling from behind at 5.5 furlongs so she looks solid for the extra sixteenth here. Tate’s in the irons, a definitely well deserved slap in the face of Jocko Maloney, who can’t ride a pig in a poke lately. This one’s mama has thrown some serious runners in the Sim. Best Well gave Wassie Pgpg’s Filly, who took down a cool $2.5 million in a brilliant Sim career. No doubt there are high hopes for W VA HERE I COME G, and we’ll be rooting for you, old buddy. Seventh in bp cost is MONKEY MICHELLE from the chill barn. (Cat Thief X Forty Niner X Touch Gold). 807 points. This is the first progeny of the Grade F mare Golden Michelle, who won two races as a 2yo. Sending that precocity to Cat Thief seems like a recipe for juvenile success. Nice win in debut with a solid 68 speed fig going 5.5 while well backed. Chill is a solid Sim veteran of 500-plus starts and 60 wins. Consistent barn and a well-meant filly. Next is THE ZAPPER G, the second of three Wassie entries. Ghostzapper X Afleet X Forestry would have been 760 points from scratch on Thursday morning. This is the first baby for the Grade G mare BUX FLEET FIRST G,who had a nondescript 3-43 racing career and did not win as a 2yo. She was third in her debut and several in here have broken their maidens, so that’s ceding a class edge there, you would think. Decent speed fig of 68. We’ll see. YANKEE ROOTS for the new greenappl8 barn is next on the shopping list at 711 points, still no cheapie by any means. Vindication X Unbridled’s Song X Saratoga Six says go sprinting on the dirt. She looked good in her debut for this new barn, winning at 5.5 while running a fast 69 fig. Would be no shock whatsover. We’re finally getting down out of the BP stratosphere with KATANAKAKE BG for Vegas Bob at a more reasonable 333 points. Crusader Sword X General Meeting X In Good Taste continues the family’s love affair with that sire. This one beat the boys at 33-1 in her debut in Kentucky of all places, with a very good 71 speed fig. She has an experience edge on her rivals, having raced twice, the second time a close-up fourth in a Maryland allowance. Both races were at the distance, too. Logical. SI WORLD(CHI), who is a contest horse for leader Stretch, cost 311 on Thursday morning with Puerto Madero X Avenue of Flags X Secretariat. She is making her Sim debut here, and as such concedes both experience and class edges to her rivals. Charlie dismissed her at 27-1. Finally, there is the only bargain bred in this field, NEW SILVER for the redflag barn. Utterly and completely dismissed at a lunatic price of 71-1, this one broke her maiden at the distance with a nice 69 speed fig for a big pot in Florida. Definite evidence of you can get a funny line in the Sim in baby races. No way should be that price, not even close. GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!!!
