Lone Filly Policy Gone White taking on the Boys in the G1 The FireBird
Let’s travel across the Atlantic to the wonderful country of Ireland for Sunday’s big Grade 1 race for 2 year olds only, The Firebird. This race is expected to draw a big crowd and I must say, the conditions for this couldn’t be better. We have a full field of 14 going to the post at 3 pm EST which also includes 1 filly going against the boys. They will go 6 furlongs or 3/4 of a mile to s lug it out for a nice purse of $500,000. Now, I think it’s time to the meet the field so here we go:
1 Mydadcharlie 6/1
Bred and owned by jimwill, this Myboycharlie (IRE) and Bone of Pegasus bay colt has two lifetime starts. He breaks fast, stalks, and then makes his move like he did in his last start in THI. He ran 2nd on the rail until they turned for home then he won going away. Don’t count this colt out just jet.
2 Marvelous Amerrico 23/1
Owned and bred by jbcri21, Marvelous Amerrico is sired by Captain Marvelous (IRE) has 6 starts in his career with three of them as wins. His last win, The G3 The Mother Lois was on 6-28-14 and with the time off that he’s had, he should be very sharp. Amerrico has also won on three different tracks, showing his versatility. He also won here on 3-1-14 in an allowance at 6f. Amerrico could just pull the upset here.
3 Harlan’s Day 18/1
Babies5 bred this colt and also owns him. By Irish sire Daylami, he only has one start which was a win at Iowa. Harlan broke sharply, sat off the leader and when they hit the 1/2 mile pole, he took over and drew away to finish the 5.5f in 1:05.53 and win by 1 1/2L. Does show that he can win in large fields.
4 Crying Lightning 10/1
Sired by Jungle Pocket out of the sim mare Maninski, Lightning is owned by his breeder, whoami3. To date, the bay colt has 3 starts and two wins both at VIC and they were both at 6.5f. He ran in the 6f G2 They July Stakes at New Market on 7-12 where he finished 2 3/4L behind the winner Ayuntamiento in 4th. Maybe Lightning will strike a third time.
5 New Ze Ze Land 11/1
This colt does have turf bred into him through his sire Iffraaj (GB).
Ze Land is out of the sim mare Starphase who won $50,000 in her racing career and he is owned by mastermlocal3. With 3 lifetime starts, Ze Land has 2 wins both of which were at Par (FR) and at 6f. This large field might be a problem but the distance won’t. Not sure if he’ll like the surface here.
6 Toorak Motion 13/1
Owned by acarigua48 and bred by acarigua17, this handsome colt is sired by AUS sire, Toorak Toff out of the sim mare Cost A Motion. He last raced on this surface on 3/01/14 in which he finished a strong 3rd and his last win was on4/10/14 in an allowance for NW2L. From looking at his past performances, he may prefer a smaller field. He ran wide for the majority of his first race here at IRE but he ran very gamely to finish 3rd. This pp might benefit him.
7 Snithill 6/1
This cowboy326 owned bay colt has already won both of his starts this year at different tracks, THI and NEW. He is sired by Snitzel. In his last start, he broke alertly, taking the rail, and ran in 3rd for the first 1/4 and 1/2 mile. When they turned for home, jockey J Carden chirped to his mount, and they won by 2 1/2 L over General Zod. This colt can get the distance and maybe another versatile younster that could steal the show.
8 Policy Gone White 17/1
The lone filly in the field is owned and bred by spingo80, sired by Danzero (AUS) and out of the sim mare Dry Lightning. PGW has 3 wins from 6 starts and all 3 wins came from NSW and the fields weren’t that big as this one is. The distance here might cause a problem as well as the surface (she never raced here before). Her last win was in the Girl Friday Turf Juvenile Filliles on 4-27-14. She would need a perfect trip against the boys in order to make a statement.
9 Traped Again 5/1
Sired by the great Curlin while out of the sim mare Storm Goddess, this bay colt is owned and bred by dundy. Traped’s two wins came from KY (5-3-14) and VT (3-22-14) at distances of 5.5 and 6f, respectively. The large field won’t bother him none but not sure about the surface. A good pick but hard to place where he will finish.
10 Frank And Beans 15/1
Turf racing is in this colts blood being that his sire is the very very famous Frankel and he is out of the sim mare Daneavigator. Frank is owned and bred by debsestate. This bay colt didn’t break his maiden until his 5th start so maybe he’s a late bloomer. He only has two wins from 8 starts and I’m thinking that a full field like this may inhibit his chances of winning. Don’t know about this colt because he has a lot to prove still.
11 Oh K’s 8/1
Let’s see, a bay colt sired by an another Australian stallion Sepoy, owned by zboro, and has hit the board in every start. I would say this is a very impressive colt and his last start was on 7-15-14 going 6.5f in allowance company. He breaks very well, gets good track position, then pounces at the right time, and he handles large fields very well. This colt gets my vote.
12 Bernatar 5/1
Ontarget2 bred and owns this 2 yr old son of Bernardini and sim mare Captured By Kings. This nice colt switched from dirt to turf and actually broke his maiden on the turf surface at KY on 5-23-14. He finished 3rd in the G3 The Rallaway in IRE on 6-29-14 breaking from pp 14. I look for him to the same thing (close) and then make a fast run at the leaders as they turn for home.
13 Arcanoid 12/1
Shagya bred and owns this2 yr old bay son of Arcade and sim mare Remember Yasawa. To date, he has 2 wins (both on turf but at different tracks) and also raced in graded company at SAF and DEA. His most impressive win was at IL on 5-12-14. He broke from pp 4 and lead from gate to wire, winning by 3 L. Also to mention that Arcanoid has raced against 13 other horses in both the G2 The Bobby Papin and G3 Salisbury Medallion while finishing 3rd and 6th, respectively. Not sure about the surface being liked here.
14 Big Cat Down 17/1
Vansheen owns this bay colt by AUS sire Churchill Downs and out of The Big Hit. Big Cat has 4 career starts with 1 win to his resume. Like Bernatar, Big Cat also broke his maiden on the turf surface after having one race on the dirt. He has yet to race overseas. Looking for his first graded stakes win overseas.
