A fine field of twelve will duke it out in the 2006 Grade III Mohammad Ali. Here they are from the rail outward:
First comes Coolk’s dual stakes winner Shark Bite. The deep closing son of Aldebaran won the Jail Joe Special in Berlin three back and most recently closed from thirteenth to fourth in a Malaysian allowance test. In the Jail Joe, the four year old homebred stopped the timer in 1:48 for the nine panel event good for a 106 speed rating. Contender if he runs back to that effort.
Here For The Party arrives in fine form having finished second in three of his previous four starts, all stakes. The handsome Hansel homebred posted a quick 110 speed figure last time out while finishing second in Vermont’s Tour Ou Rien Stake at 9.5 furlongs. Trainer Babyfarm is very pleased with Here For The Party since switching to dirt and has named Kentucky kingpin D Givins to ride Saturday.
Twist Of Lemon has won eight of fifteen starts since abandoning the turf in favor of the main course. He was a creditable fourth in The Wax Tom ‘Cap last time out and had won three of four allowance tests immediately prior to that start. The flashy chestnut with the sparkling pedigree (Lemon Drop Kid x Storm Cat x Kris S.) has not yet lived up to his breeding and looks in stakes company. But trainer TheaxeII is confident that Twist Of Lemon will improve his Stakes Placed designation soon.
Lilac Hotel is a nice allowance runner. A big win two back earned the son of Broad Brush a stakes start. 2122’s homebred barely raised a gallop before retreating in The Rock’s Texas Cooking Series Stake. Seems overmatched again.
Six year old Leaky Tap has been a good horse for a long time. He won three of four starts as a juvenile and had a nice sophomore campaign getting checks in The Bluegrass Derby, Florida Derby, Middle Jewel and winning the Grade III Giant Slayer Classic. Sharp second in a listed stake last time out and trainer Carolover is approaching the 100 win mark so the big Pleasant Tap stallion cannot be taken lightly.
Looney1 sends out graded winner Not Bluffing for the Ali. The five year old son of Pine Bluff won the Grade II Iowa Cornhusker BB Classic in a super fast 1:47.2 (111 SP) last year. But since then, the rangy homebred has failed to hit the board in seven starts. Needs to regain his best form to contend.
Goillili sends out veteran warrior Silent Voices for this test. The Battle Cry five year old has quietly amassed $143,000 in thirty-six career attempts. The erstwhile claimer lost sixteen straight before breaking his maiden. But he then reeled off five of six and is coming into the Ali in good form. Two back he finished a solid third in The Razorback to earn his GP designation and last time out won a 3X allowance in Eastern Kentucky posting a nifty spiffy 104 speed number in the process. The “now” horse.
Sea Senor is living proof that winning is no prerequisite for success as a broodmare. The daughter of Unbridled and Tight Track (El Gran Senor) won only once and averaged less than a thousand dollars a race in twenty-seven career starts. But her mating to Carson City produced Grade III winner Loose Carson. The speedy six year old earned his GW designation four back by winning Utah’s Queen of the County Stake. Trainer Alleds is hoping his charge can bounce back from a disappointing fifth in the Grade I Oaktree last time out. Favorite is certainly capable if he fires.
Mambo SS (Kingmambo x Darn Langfuhr) is ambitiously placed by trainer Tinsaltown. The career allowance horse could not possibly have found a tougher spot for his added money debut. Nice colt but in way too tough.
Guns Of August enters the Mohammad Ali following his third place finish in the Ali’s Tater. The four year old Deputy Commander colt from the fine producing Glitterman mare, Ms. Lady, appears ambitiously placed by Waremblem4. But anything can happen in a horse race and this quarter million dollar earner does try hard.
Rootin Fer Dootsin is another one of Gcutty’s band of “Dootsin” horses. Rootin has carved out a decent living in mid to upper level allowances. Last time out he crushed a band of conditioned foes in Indiana while posting a 100 speed rating. But his record in stakes is zero for fourteen. Needs an easier spot.
Seeking Pie is yet another seeking graded glory. Jefahl’s homebred Seeking The Gold stallion is a multiple stakes winner. Three back he won the Mine Project in South Dakota posting a 104 in the process. He regressed a bit in his next two starts and will need his very best to threaten on Saturday.
