GR Simsters Clash In Del Mar Debutante
A dozen well-bred fillies are set to clash in the GR Simster Del Mar Debutante, a residency-restricted stakes at 7 furlongs on the main track. A few are unraced; the veteran in the field has five starts under her belt. Just about any of these beauties has the capability of winning this race, creating quite a puzzle for both the oddsmaker and the betting public; but perhaps a decent payout awaits for those able to solve it.
A pair of fillies have won their debuts with ease. Sdmf5 has Kills the Pain, a pale chestnut daughter of Giant’s Causeway out of a Northern Dancer mare. Although bred for the turf, the Killer handled the main track with ease, winning under wraps in Delaware, and posting a 76 SF for the 6 panels. The extra furlong should present no difficulties, the only question is whether four weeks’ rest is enough. Dwell On the Past is dismissed in the odds by the snobbish morning line setter, who seems to rely more on pedigree than performance in making said odds, so for someone bound and determined to take a flyer, here’s your value play at 12/1. The lender3 filly is by freshman sire The Cliff’s Edge out of a Boston Harbor mare. Both stallions were talented juveniles who could go a route of ground, and in her debut, the chestnut filly has followed in their footsteps, coming from midpack to win a 6 ½ furlong maiden event. Seven furlongs seems right up her alley, and she enters this race with six weeks between races. Her connections were also surprised by her long odds, and are “looking for her to put on a good show and duplicate that great kick she showed in her maiden score.”
Green Eggs ‘N Spam has yet to win in four starts, but flourished in her latest under the guidance of new trainer acote. The $500,000 auction purchase showed that she was simply green in her debut and her previous connections probably gave up on her too quickly, as she returned to the dirt with flair, the Cape Town filly flying late to just miss, posting a 75 SF for the 7 furlongs. Probably wants a mile or more, but a repeat of this performance makes the daughter of a stakes-placed Storm Cat mare dangerous indeed, and the poor turf form has inflated her odds to 22/1. Must include in the bottom of any exotic wager. Rude Laugher is another crying for more ground. The royally bred daughter of A.P. Indy out of a Sadler’s Wells mare was merely okay in her debut over an off-turf track, but made an eye-catching move in the GR Juvy Blast in her most recent effort, closing from 13th to third. She earned a 77 SF in that race, best in the field, and gets Fred Gossett, but will need a lively pace to run at. Regardless of how she does Saturday, keep an eye on her once she gets to go a route of ground. Shadowclaw’s Citizen Storm relished the slop in her debut, where she tired to finish second (71 SF). The Proud Citizen filly tired again in her second start, and the extra distance doesn’t appear promising unless Bonus can get her to either relax or come from off the pace. Would like her chances much more if this were a five furlong affair. I spoke to her trainer, who said, “”I entered my maiden filly Citizen Storm in this race as a rabbit for my other entry. The problem is that I don’t have another entry. Is that a problem?” Ninja Accountant has been knocking on the door, missing by a nose and a neck in her first two races. The dark brown daughter of freshman sire Strong Hope was a dull fourth last time out, and seeks to make amends to ravencard for that sluggish effort. Ninja is the first foal out of Wild Saint, who raced five times as a juvenile, winning a maiden claimer on the turf. I spoke to her trainer about that last race, and he commented “I think the distance is the big problem, since I haven’t had a Strong Hope even go 6f effectively.” That said, any of these fillies could win it; he hoped the victorious filly was his. Ninja is the first foal out of Wild Saint, who raced five times as a juvenile, winning a maiden claimer on the turf. The veteran in the field is Sin Nomine, for bigmoose2. The elegant chestnut is a full sister to the graded stakes winning Unbridled View, but hasn’t managed to display his turn of foot so far in her career. She is a winner on the main track, and the extra distance should suit her come from behind running style, but Sin will need to show more to have a chance with some of the flashier competitors.
There are five fillies making their debut in here, and each one of them could be any kind. Romeshome sends Moneyaintathang, a seal-brown, blaze-faced daughter of Seeking the Gold out of a Lyphard mare. I’ve Got Soul will prove whether or not she’ll be a soldier in the racing wars for trainer cobrakai. The copper chestnut is by Vindication, who has been a previous source of success for her connections. Lopic87’s Wainguard is by Crimson Guard, a son of Danzig who was at his best on the turf. Her dam, Healthy Milk, has produced two other foals, a modest claimer by Colonial Affair, and my own longwinded Grandstand. May want turf more than dirt, but the distance should not be an issue. Make It Happen hails from the mufamig barn. Her dam is a lightly raced daughter of Seattle Slew, a winner in her lone start on the main track, and her sire, the talented Johannesburg. Stuck in the outside post position is the giant dark-red chestnut Five Points, who represents lenny1. The well-named daughter of Point Given is the first foal out of the Forty Niner mare, Pushing Forty.
Good luck to all the competitors!
