A Filly to Watch
With a win in Saturday’s Grade III Backward Gal Stakes, Button’s Strong Prospect is now four of five lifetime and has to be considered among the top three year old fillies sprinting today. The stalking trip showed, perhaps, an ability to go longer. The seven furlong distance on this race is the longest she has tried so far, and it will be interesting to see if she can handle two turns.
Sire Strong Hope has already produced five stakes winners and now two graded stakes winners in the three year old crop, and Strong Prospect is leading them all in earnings.
As expected, the early pace of the Backward Gal was dominated by RaceK’s Comprende. Sitting just off Comprende and hanging on to an impressive place position was MikeHusker’s Upsetter. who very nearly did upset this field, but for the impressive run by Strong Prospect. Meanwhile, Comprende uncharacteristically faded to sixth.
Charmer’s Vigilante completed the $234.20 trifecta with an even effort. She seems to be improving and merits consideration next time.
Troy5’s Thetis, the pick from a certain Black Type Bugler handicapper, was vanned off the track at the end of the race. We wish her a speedy recovery.
