Fourteen Fillies Try For Smackdown Glory

Fourteen Fillies Try For Smackdown Glory

Delaware – I was looking forward to covering the seven furlong 2 YO filly race which will be the 15th race of the afternoon.  A full field of 14 fillies will try to bring home the glory for their respective residencies. From my perch in the corner of the clocker’s shed, I watched as the 14 youngsters took their final preps for Saturday’s race.

First to come by was Raider’s smallish bay filly, A Ok Raider (10/1).  A daughter of Souvenir Copy she is undefeated coming into this race.  Moving easily, she galloped a mile, today, and should love the extra distance.  She earned her best speed figure of 83 last time out when she won The Slob Mayying.

Super19 and Super23 sent their fillies out to gallop a mile together.  On the inside was Storming The Hill (11/1), a well-made daughter of Storm Cat.  The bright chestnut is the winner of her only start and was opening on the field at six furlongs.  A beautiful mover she should like the added distance.  On her outside was a large brown filly with a large star, Making A Point (12/1) by Point Given.  She may be royally bred but she moved like a washing machine.  Pretty is as pretty does and she has won two of three starts and was eager and pulling hard as she went by me.

The dark brown filly Coffee (11/1) went by me under a snug hold and was trying to run off with her rider.  By Housebuster, she is trained by Catomine and is the number 2 ranked filly with two wins from three starts.  She won the Grade II Landaluce last time out with an 80 speed figure.  She was drawing off and is another that will appreciate the extra distance.

Simsters7 sent Call A Priest (14/1) out with a pony and although the waspy bay filly has only won one race she has never been out of the money.  Call A Priest (I love the name) is by The Cliff’s Edge.  Also out with a pony was Wistful’s Whip Smart (12/1).  The rawboned dark bay filly is also undefeated and is the winner of the Prospector Seattle.

Casa Bonita (7/1) and Punch Drunk T (9/1) followed each other around the track the wrong way.  Jogging well in hand was Ravencard’s Forestry filly, Casa Bonita.  She easily won her only start and the dark bay is another that should appreciate the extra distance.  Punch Drunk T is trained by Xtchamps and light grey filly had a beautiful stride on her as she jogged around.  Ranked # 14 she is by Two Punch and was second last time out in the Grade II Vermont BB Juvenile Filly.

Vigilante (13/1) galloped by under a long hold.  The bright bay Charmer trainee was moving well and caught more than a few eyes.  She finished second in a photo in her only start and will hopefully move up off of that effort.

Revelation sent his dark bay filly by War Chant out for a two minute lick. Call To Arms (17/1) won her only start and that was on the grass but she seemed to be going well on the dirt this morning.  Also out for a fast gallop was Glennwins‘ filly by Adjudicating, Roses For Raider (21/1).  This well-made filly was on the bit and looked sharp.  She has won her last two and will be shortening up on Saturday.

With four white socks and a blaze down her nose, Hancock Pond (6/1) looked like a she should be in the show ring.  She has a big way of moving and she should like the added distance.  Salamander trains this Gone West filly.  Peeps8 sent his Empire Maker filly, Building Empires (10/1) for a mile gallop and a down the lane breeze.  The dark brown filly finished third last time out in The Grade II Vermont BB Juvenile Filly.

It was late in the morning when Fu Fu Mascus (5/1) stepped out on the track and there was a good reason.  She immediately stood on her hind legs and waved at the small crowd that was there to watch.  She then plunged down, jerking the shank out of her handler’s hands and tore off down the track.  Her rider, in an amazing feat of horsemanship, probably born out of self preservation, reached down and grabbed the loose shank and then let the light chestnut with the flaxen mane and tail gallop on out.  Trainer Freeky breathed a sigh of relief when the shank was gathered up as the number 8 ranked filly skimmed along with a ground-eating stride.  “That boy is worth every penny I pay him,” he said, when he could breathe again.   The Giant’s Causeway filly is 4/4 in the money and has a top speed figure of 86, earned in a second place finish last time out in the Grade III Butterfly.

Good Luck to all.
