Wisconsin Downs presents the ALYURBASRBLONGTOUS Stakes, a six and one half furlong dash fashioned for older runners to be contested over the Bart Starr Turf Course. Here are the contestants from the hedge outward.
Donrawl01’s Crimsonite breaks from gate one. The big Palace Music colt, from the rich ($332, 545) End Sweep matron Seattle Sweep, has been first or second eleven times in only eighteen career starts. Five of his six wins have come over the lawn and he is a graded winner by virtue of his triumph in last year’s Kcusrocek Stakes-G3 in Ireland. Crimsonite has slumped a bit of late, hitting the board only once in his last four outings. Jockey Norman Johnson will handle the four year old on Saturday.
It’s taken trainer Libledlady a while to figure out Frenchy Fuqua‘s preferred surface and distance. The versatile son of Lemon Drop Kid has made the determination difficult by running hard and well regardless of the conditions. But reading between the lines, turf sprints look like his best option. He won a turf sprint stake three back and is unplaced in five dirt races before and after that victory. Solid journeyman Mark Snider rides the former Pittsburgh Steeler running back’s namesake.
Boricua Soy drew the three hole for Carlos150. Although the Roanoke colt is stakes placed, he’s won only one of twenty career starts and is severely overmatched this week.
Othfly’s Light is a handsome, very well bred colt who is simply too slow to beat this kind. The Fantastic Light x Kris S x Theatrical(ire) colt won four straight starter allowances before a fifth place reality check in stakes company. Nisqually made a great claim for $2,000 and the switch to dirt really helped. Improved horse but this is not his spot.
Maltese3’s Jackson Creek found the step up to added money company too much in his last two following a narrow win over nw3L company. In way too tough again.
Be The One(aus) is the most successful of four foals from the Mr. Greeley graded winner, Mama Ready. Johnno’s Aussie bred son of Flying Spur(aus) will undoubtedly use his quick gate speed in an attempt to regain his best form. He has narrowly missed hanging on in several races after setting blistering fractions. Leading jockette, the lovely and talented Linda Cihak, will try to ration the stakes placed speedster’s energy on Saturday.
Babyfilly’s homebred Sky Mesa colt Grand Mesa could be the sleeper at 10-1. Throw out his grade one debacle and an ill advised route try, and you have a very fast, consistent stakes winning, graded placed race horse with earnings in excess of a quarter million dollars. The race sets up well for his usual stalk and pounce tactics. Upset call?
Six year old High N Black has made a career of beating fields like this. He has amassed eight career stakes wins along with five seconds. Fast, consistent, versatile. This is a REAL racehorse! Purespeed’s High Yield veteran is clearly the one to beat according to linemaker Vince Lombardi III who made him the 3-1 favorite. A victory would nudge High N Black’s career winnings over the half million mark. Leading rider Clyde Capper gets the leg up.
Indy Bertrando will be making career start number fifty-six. Mgfarms’ veteran turf sprinter is approaching $700,000 in career earnings. Although he hasn’t won for a while, the chestnut Admiral Indy stallion has shared in three of his last five starts. The multiple graded winner is still very fast and if he wakes up feeling good Saturday, he has the back class to run away and hide from this bunch. Your call.
Last but not least is Loubrown’s Once Haunted. The superbly bred (Silver Ghost x Danehill x Sadler’s Wells) gray debuted by winning a stake and has been doing the same ever since.
Nine wins, all stakes, in only twenty-one lifetime starts. Was outrun in the Grade One Japan Cup last time out but won two stakes similar to this one prior to that. Needs only run his race without mishap to regain his winning ways.
This should be a great race! Come out early as the first 5,000 paid admissions will get a Brett Favre bobblehead doll.
