Knightmare’s Breeding Corner
Retired Mares of the Breeder’s Bowl Part III
This week the Breeding Corner will take a look at the retired mares that have produced runners in this year’s Breeder’s Bowl Turf Juvenile, and the Breeder’s Bowl Turf Filly Juvenile. Again we will not be looking at he mares just taking a look at the actual retired mares.

The he mare has seemed to translate to success for Out of this World as a dam. She has three offspring two stakes winners one graded. She has a four year old by Beat Hollow (GB) that retired after six lifetime wins three of which were stakes with over $260,000 in earnings. Her three year old by General Meeting was retired after just three starts with one win and showed some promise. Then her two year old Bead Two (GB).

Mother Virtuous (Omerta Code) – Gone West X Mill Reef. Omerta Code had two life times wins, was stakes placed, earned over $90,000 on the track and had a career high speed figure of 103. That has translated into success has she has produced a stakes winner and a graded stakes winner in her first three off spring. She has a six year old retired mare by Nureyev that was a stakes winner and has produced a stakes winner herself. Her three year old by Awesome Again has not lived up to expectations. Omerta Code by Sadler’s Wells has had a hell of start to his career.

Otto Judge (Ransom) – Danehill X he mare Diligent Judge by Machiavellian. Diligent Judge won eleven times, over $130,000 in purses and had a career high speed figure of 111. Otto Judge had just one win from only five starts with a high speed figure of 83. Ransom is her only offspring. Ransom is by Red Ransom and is a stakes winner.
Looking at all these mares over the last few weeks it becomes obvious that the mares that continue to produce good runner after good runner were also good on the track. There was only one mare that produced a Breeder’s Bowl runner that has produced well but did not run well on the track. There were several mares that were not good at all on the track but in their first offspring they found success.
18 of these retired mares were stakes winners on the track. They have produced 46 foals. 15 graded stakes winners (33%) 2 graded placed, 7 were listed stakes winners and another 3 are stakes placed. So 27 of the 46 foals (59%) have found some sort of stakes success.
Of the 34 other mares they produced 78 foals. 25 are graded stakes winners (32%), 2 graded placed, 12 listed stakes winners and 4 stakes placed runners. So that is 43 of 78 foals (55%) that have had stakes success. Not a lot of difference in total numbers wise but consider that 18 stakes winning mares produced 15 graded stakes winners (83%) versus 34 non stakes winning mares producing 25 graded stakes winners (74%).
Also consider just ten of the 34 non stakes winning mares were able to produce more than one successful foal. Another characteristic the 34 non stakes winning mares have is that of the 24 that have only produced one stakes level runner 20 did it with their very first foal and have produced nothing else to speak of.
I hope you enjoyed a look at the retired mares that produced Breeder’s Bowl runners in 2005.
