Winner has Quality

The featured race at Longchamp on Saturday was the Grade One St. Larry, a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a quarter on the turf. In the prevailing fine weather, the going was firm and there were twelve confirmed runners competing for the $500,000 purse,

It was a very open market, with New York Escape(AUS) just the favourite at 5/1. Arc A Comin’(GER) and Navigating(JPN) were next at 6/1 and Madly Deeply(JPN) was sent off at 7/1. At 8/1 were the locally-bred Local Amadeus(FR) and Mercato(ENG), while on 9/1 were Quality Buzz(KY) and Iron Galeanthropy(KY).

The early pace was supplied by Run Into Barb(IRE), coming out of the inside stall, and Arc A Comin’(GER). Iron Galeanthropy(KY), drawn on the wide outside, led the chasing group with the rather oddly-named Kingofthemall(KY).

Settled towards the rear was Quality Buzz(KY), who came out of stall six. After about five furlongs, she started a run from seven and a quarter lengths off the pace, going into the lead in the home straight. She extended her advantage to win by three lengths.

Drawn just on the outside of her was New York Escape(AUS), who was settled in mid-division. As the eventual winner started her run, New York Escape(AUS) was caught somewhat flat-footed four furlongs out, but chased Quality Buzz(KY) down the home straight, running on well, but could not catch the winner.

With the outside draw, Iron Galeanthropy(KY) made a forward move after they had gone five furlongs and was able to make a challenge more than once in the home straight, but was never quite good enough and finished four lengths behind the winner in third.

The winner is owned and trained by jetair and her jockey on this occasion was S. Graf. She recorded a speed figure of 100, the winning time being two minutes, two seconds and two fifths.
