Hutchingson Stakes

The third graded race on the card for this Saturday in Florida will be the Hutchingson Stakes (G2), held at seven and a half furlongs on the main dirt track. The race is open to only three-year-olds and offers a purse of $375,000 and is set to go off at 11:15 PM eastern on Saturday. The race has attracted nearly a full field of twelve horses. Lets take a look at our contenders for this years race.  

  1. Charles Oakley – meola4 – B. Ironside – 15/1 

Going into the slot on the rail this light grey gelding is one of the top three-year-old sprinters and will be cutting back in distance after stretching out in his most recent start. The most recent start for the three-year-old by Knicks Go was in December of his two-year-old season during the Happy New Year (G1) at a mile and one sixteenth. The colt broke out of the gate in ninth but faded later in the race to cross the wire twenty-four and three-quarter lengths back in fourteenth with a speed figure of seventy-five. The colt didn’t seem to like the added distance, so the connections decided to return him to shorter sprints for the first start of his three-year-old career. The most recent win for the colt was in a six furlong allowance in Kentucky, though the colt has placed on the board several times in graded stakes races, a win in graded company has still eluded the colt. 

2. Manukamata (SKOR) – untouched – N. Lawton – 14/1 

In the second slot will be the first graded winner to go to the gate for the race. Bred in South Korea, the bay colt has been racing mostly at longer distances, but will be returning to sprint races for this weekend. The most recent start for the colt was in California during the Movieland Futurity (G1) at a mile and one sixteenth. The colt was out of the gate near the rear of the field, which had been his running style his last few races, though he never made a move down the stretch and came home to finish fourteenth, seventeen lengths off the pace with a speed figure of eighty-one. The most recent win for the colt was midway through his two-year-old season when he won the mile long Trixy’s Delight Special (G3) in Argentina by three-quarters of a length.  

3. Hellheim Troll – pbcash – R. Cerda – 7/1 

Making his graded stakes debut this weekend, the three-year-old chestnut colt is the first of two sired by Speightstown to be going into the gate this weekend. Like the three going into the gate before, this colt is being cut back in distance for this race after racing several starts over a mile. His most recent start was at a mile during a listed stakes race in Colorado. The colt was sent straight to the lead in this race but was caught by a late closer to cross the wire second, finishing just a length behind with a speed figure of ninety-nine. The most recent win for the colt was in a mile long allowance overseas in England, which the colt won in wire to wire fashion.  

4. Ayala – lourival – N. Bonus – 6/1 

Also making his first graded stakes start this weekend is this bay colt by Cistron. The three-year-old will be making his thirteenth lifetime start. The most recent start for the colt was in a listed stakes at seven and a half furlongs, the same distance this race will be run over on Saturday. The listed stakes was in Maryland and resulted in a win for the colt by two and a quarter lengths after leading the field gate to wire. The colt has finished off the board just twice in his career, both of which were in mile long allowance races.  

5. Global Roar – rajincajun – R. Strzelcyk – 11/1 

Next up we will have the second, and only other graded stakes winner going into gate number five. The colt will also be cutting back his distance and making a return to racing on the dirt The most recent start for the three-year-old gelding was on the turf in the Joystick Dirty Time (G2) at a mile and one sixteenth. The gelding broke near the back of the field and wasn’t able to gain much ground in the race before crossing the wire thirteen and three-quarter lengths back, setting a speed figure of eighty-seven over the turf. The most recent win for the gelding was in his two-year-old season at a mile on the dirt in Arizona during the Cryogenics Juvenile (G3), in which again the colt was one of the last out of the gate, but he made up tremendous ground in the stretch to win by a length and a half with a speed figure of ninety-five. 

6. Infinite Stars – tisjuliet – S. Tate – 5/1 

Making his seventh lifetime start this weekend and his first start against graded company, this bay colt is the first of two sired by Into Mischief to go into the starting gate for this weekends race. The colt, most recently started during a listed stakes race at seven and a half furlongs in Delaware. The colt won this race by two lengths, setting a speed figure of ninety-six, after being held just off the pace early on in third. The three-year-old had also won his prior start during a seven furlong allowance race in Kentucky in a similar fashion.  

7. Outback Garble – outback4 – B. Scott – 7/1 

Going for a third try this weekend against graded stakes company, this son of Quality Road will be making his sixth lifetime start. The Kentucky-bred most recently started over a mile in The Legoland (G3). The horse broke out of the gate and settled into fifth early on, though he would cross the wire eighth, back off the pace by seven and a half lengths while setting a speed figure of ninety-six. The most recent win for the colt was in a listed stakes at seven furlongs in Mexico. The colt was held up closer to the pace in this start and was urged forward midway through to the take the lead and win by a length and three-quarters.  

8. Fishing Catalina – ireallyhate2yo – K. Friar – 21/1 

The longshot of this weekend’s race, the chestnut colt we be making his first start with graded company after a step down in class back to allowance race. The son of Catalina Cruiser has made nine lifetime starts, the most recent of which was an allowance race over nine furlongs in Illinois. Sent out of the gate and held just off the pace in second, the colt would cross the wire second, back by two and three quarter lengths while setting a speed figure of eighty. His last listed start was in Minnesota at five furlongs, which was also a second place finish for the colt, as he was just narrowly defeated by a neck at the wire. The colt’s last win was at seven furlongs during an allowance race, also in Minnesota last August.  

9. Cruel Flurry – lenny1 – E. Cerda – 5/1  

Winning three consecutive races leading up to the graded start this weekend, the three-year-old is the second Into Mischief sired colt going into the starting gate in the race this weekend. The bay colt most recently started during a listed stakes race at seven and a half furlongs in Indiana. The colt won the race after leading wire to wire, setting a speed figure of one and a half lengths while setting a speed figure of ninety-eight. The colts two other wins were a listed stakes and an allowance race, respectively, and both over seven and a half furlongs. These other two races were also won in wire to wire fashion. The only graded start for the colt was in August of his two-year-old season during the Buckeye Juvenile (G3) at a mile and one sixteenth. The colt finished seventh at the wire, the only race in which he has finished off the board.  

10. Listen First – desplocal – B. Renfroe – 6/1 

Next up we have our second Speightstown-sired colt going into the starting gate. The chestnut colt will be making his ninth lifetime start this Saturday and will be returning to graded company after a step down in class. The most recent start for the three-year-old was at a mile during a listed stakes race in Massachusetts. The colt was sent out straight for the lead out of the gate, but he was caught in the stretch and crossed the wire in fifth, four and a half lengths off the pace and setting a speed figure of ninety-eight. The colt’s only graded start came in his prior race, the last start of his two-year-old season, during the Movieland Futurity (G1) in which he finished thirteenth. The last win for the colt was in November during a listed stakes race at a mile, in which the colt won by a length and a half in wire to wire fashion.  

11. More Alex – crandyiii – J. Hernandez – 14/1 

Nearing the last of our field, the bay colt by Afleet Alex will be going into gate eleven. The three-year-old colt will be making his ninth start this Saturday and is coming off of a win in an allowance race over six furlongs in Mexico. The colt won this race in wire to wire fashion, setting a speed figure ninety-three in his length and a half victory. Prior to this the colt started twice in listed company, which both brought off the board finishes of fourth and sixth respectively. The colt only has one graded start under his belt, which was early in his two-year-old season. This start was in the Televison Stakes (G3) at five furlongs. The colt finished eighth in this start after coming off breaking his maiden.  

12. Fleet Security – enterpire – F. Oxon – 10/1 

Last into the gate and on the far outside post, this colt will be having another try over the dirt, in what will be his second graded start. The most recent start for the bay three-year-old was over a mile in a listed stakes race in Massachusetts. The colt was held back off the lead in seventh at the start, though crossed the wire in ninth, setting a speed figure of ninety-three while eight and three-quarter lengths back off the pace. Prior to this the colt had won three consecutive races over the turf, including two allowance races and a listed stakes over seven furlongs. The most recent win was the listed stakes, which the colt won by a length and a quarter with a speed figure of ninety-five. The colt’s only graded start to date was in The Stanford (G2) at six furlongs on the dirt in New York where the colt finished eleventh midway through his two-year-old season.
