This week we are headed to Florida where the G1, The Glenn Kegasus Traditon Killer will be one of the races headlining the card this Saturday and will be a night race under the lights.  The race is restricted to 4 year old and older horses and will be at the distance of 9 furlongs across a fast dirt track at post time.  This race has drawn a field of eleven well decorated horses to make up this field and it should be an exciting race for all.  The morning line odds have now been set and the post positions have been drawn.  Let us now take a preview of the eleven horses that have entered the G1, The Glenn Kegasus Tradition Killer here in Florida.

Breaking from the inside gate we have this 5 year old Light Grey Horse who was sired by Zenstional ZENSATIONAL x SMART STRIKE x DYNAFORMER).  He has placed in graded races recently, but still remains in the hunt for his first graded win.  Last time out we saw this horse on 12/04/2022 in New York when he went 9.5 furlongs in the G3, Queen Of The Country Stakes.  This late closer showed up with a nice run in this race as he got up for a second place finish with a 114 speed rating.  The distance in this race on Saturday should be good for him, but he will be facing some big competition when he breaks from his gate representing the GR Simsters.

Next out we have this 6 year old Roan Horse who was sired by Arrowgate (ARROGATE x A.P. INDY x AWESOME AGAIN) and that is out of the HOF, EOY winning mare, Union Jack Flyer.  This horse has exclusively been running in graded races with his four most recent starts being at the G1 level.  Two starts back he ran in the slop in California and got up for the win in the G1, The GoodyGood with a flashy 120 speed rating.  Last time out he ran in Japan on 11/26/2022 going 9 furlongs in the G1, The Japan Dirt Cup.  He would not repeat to get his second win in a row but did come in fourth just one and a half strides off with a 116 speed rating.  This horse has been running well for the owner and the horse gets a familiar jockey in the saddle for this trip in Florida.  This pair will saddle up in the paddock and make their way out under the lights representing the Empire State Racing residency.

This is a 5 year old Roan Horse who was sired by Arrogate (ARROGATE x SMART STRIKE x A.P. INDY).  This past season this horse has never failed to hit the boards but was unable to pick up a clean win.  But that changed his last time out and first start of the 2023 season when we saw him on the track in California going 8.5 furlongs on 01/23/2023 in the G2, San Valenzuala Breeders Bowl Stakes.  The track listed as “good” that day would not stop this horse from closing sharply down the stretch to get up for the win with a 120 speed rating.  He is seeking his first G1 win this weekend in Florida and has one of his favorite jockeys taking the mount up top when then come out in the post parade representing the GR Simsters residency.

Here we have a 4 year old Roan Gelding who was sired by Tapit (TAPIT x AWESOME AGAIN x CITY ZIP).  During his 2022 campaign he had five starts and four of them ended with him being found in the winner’s circle at the conclusion.  The other race he did not win he came in second. He is coming into Saturday’s race off of three straight wins.  It was in his most recent start that he got his first start in graded company.  This race was on 12/10/2022 here in Florida going 9 furlongs in the G3, The Mr. Hooper Handicap.  He did not let his owner down as he glided to the wire first to get the win by two lengths with a 115 speed rating.  It’s also noteworthy that he was the only 3 year old in that big field of horses as he stepped up to face older contenders.  The owner is giving his horse another opportunity to move up in class for Saturday’s start and is hopeful to see good things happen for his horse when he breaks from his post representing the Midas residency.

This is a 5 year old Bay Horse that was sired by Quality Road (QUALITY ROAD x UNCLE MO x TAPIT).  Three starts back he ran here in Florida and got up for the win in the G3, Save A Buck.  He came back out in November and threw a clunker in the G2, Lewis & Clark Stakes (equipment failure).  This leads up to his most recent start in New York on 12/25/2022 where he was dropped in class to go 8.5 furlongs in a $76500 Allowance.  He was well back in fifth at the third call but gave some extra closing effort down the stretch as he moved his way up to a third place finish with a 115 speed rating.  This horse needs to find a clean trip and show up with a good run against this field on Saturday when he come out to represent the East-West Connection residency.

Next out we have this 4 year old Chestnut Colt who was sired by Medaglia D’Oro (MEDAGLIA D’ORO x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x SEATTLE SLEW).  This horse had a big 2022 season picking up six wins in nine starts.  Some notable wins include the G1, Arkansas Juvenile-Derby Lock Prep and the G1, Eddie Haskell Stakes.  But he would pick up yet another big win in his most recent start on 11/26/2022 when he came out in Japan going 9 furlongs in the G1, The Japan Dirt Cup.  By the third call he had moved up to fourth, but in his stretch run jockey, L Radzinski would time it right to get his horse up for the win by three quarters of a length and get the win with a 118 speed rating.  This Saturday jockey L Radzinski will again get the call to saddle up with this horse.  They have a history of doing well together and the owner is in hope this pair can get another big win here in Florida.  They will make their way out in the post parade and over to their gate representing the GR Simsters.

Here we have a 6 year old Bay Gelding who was sired by Ghostzapper (GHOSTZAPPER x CORINTHIAN x SEEKING THE GOLD).  Two starts back this horse had a nice run to get up for the win in the G2, The Brookline Handicap.  That win gave him two wins in a row at the 9 furlong distance.  He was then sent out for his most recent start in Kentucky on 11/05/2022 to go 10 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Classic.  He would balk at the added furlong in this race and remained well back throughout for a very disappointing finish.  The owner has dropped his horse back down to this 9 furlong distance on Saturday where he knows his horse has performed well in the past.  He is hoping to see a big rebounding effort out of his horse after having a nice rest from the track and added training time.  This horse has the goods to contend, and he will need to show up with another big effort this time out when he heads out of the paddock representing the Only Stayers residency.

Coming out next will be this 6 year old Chestnut Horse who was sired by Curlin (CURLIN x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x ALYDAR).  Back in March of 2022 this horse hit it big when he got the win in the G3, The Skipping Away here in Florida.  He followed that up with a third place finish in the G1, The Barry Foster.  He then had a few struggling races up to his most recent start in West Virginia on 12/25/2022 when he would go 9 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Chief Marc Dirt Challenge.  He remained close just off the leaders in the early going.  By the third call he had moved into second and when asked for some extra effort in his stretch run, he found it and went to the front to get up for the win by two strides and a 116 speed rating.  This horse needs to find that kind of effort here in Florida and the owner is in hope to see his horse get another grade win when he breaks from his gate representing the Empire State Racing residency.

This is a 5 year old Bay Horse who was sired by Quality Road (QUALITY ROAD x STREET CRY x SEATTLE SLEW) and that is out of EOY winning mare, Tears In Seattle.  Three starts back this horse got up for a nice win in the G3, The Bull Durham.  He came back out next to claim the victory in the G2, Lewis & Clark Stakes.  Then came his most recent race in Kentucky on 12/31/2022 going 8 furlongs in the G1, Frostbite Mile.  He had been running in 9 furlong races and he seemed to not have his timing right for this race when he crossed the wire in a disappointing ninth with a 110 speed rating.  The jump back up to 9 furlongs here in Florida looks like a good spot for him and he should enjoy the added furlong over his most recent start in Kentucky.  This horse tends to close late in his best races and that would be my expectation this Saturday night when he comes out in the post parade representing the GR Simsters.

Next, we have this 5 year old Bay Gelding who was sired by Archipenko (ARCHIPENKO x GALILEO (IRE) x LYPHARD). Two starts back this horse found a gate to wire win the G1, Bob Woodward Memorial.  He was then sent back out for his most recent start in Kentucky on 11/05/2022 to go 10 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Classic.  With a very familiar jockey to this horse, O A Haack in the saddle. Out of the gate there was trouble this time out as he could not get his horse at or near the front where the horse seems to perform best.  They struggled throughout this race and disappointingly finished well back at the conclusion.  Perhaps he did not like the added furlong that he was use to running at and thus this cut back to 9 furlongs here in Florida should be more to his liking.  This rabbit can run and if he can get out of the gate fast and to the front, he should be in a good position to finish well.  The horse gets a jockey change this time out when they saddle up in the paddock representing the GR Simsters.

11JOSEPH THE PIONEERKY6Mdoodlegbs1M Mason18661%$1,539,284226.009/2

Coming out of the far gate we have this 6 year old Bay Horse who was sired by Pioneerof The Nile (PIONEEROF THE NILE x UNBRIDLED x GHOSTZAPPER).  Back in May of last season this horse got a big win in the G1, The Barry Foster.  Two starts back he also found a second place finish in the slop in the G1, The GoodyGood.  Last time out he ran in Kentucky on 11/05/2022 going 10 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Classic.  This late closer put up a fight but could not find a spot on the boards as he crossed the wire in fifth with a 114 speed rating.  This horse likes to close late in his best starts and you better be watching the rearview mirror coming down the stretch as he could challenge and start picking off horse when he come out representing the Universal Racing Club residency.

Good luck to all owners and horses!

Skippy’s Watch List

2-Hopkinson Flyer:  Just missed the board last time out. Can he find it again in Florida?

7-Huddled Masses B: Coming back down to 9 furlongs should help him. Does he rebound?

9-Denny Way:  Adding a furlong from most recent start.  Can he find a spot this time out?

Tarton’s Long Shot

6-Caused By Giants:  This horse had three big G1 wins this past season.  Last time out he hit a G1 win, and he is seeking to get his third win in a row.  He has one of his favorite jockeys L Radzinski in the saddle for this trip and they have done very well together in the past.  This horse is going off at 10/1 in the morning line and should be a good play to make some money at the betting window.  I think he is a spoiler in this crowd at these odds and has a good shot to be on the boards.  I think I will put him on some tickets here in Florida.
