Stakes – Purse $100,000

Restricted to 3 Year Olds and Older NY Bred
9 furlongs on Dirt

On the eve of a New Year, fourteen New York bred beauties have traveled to Vermont for the CVBears Gotham City Classic. The field will go nine furlongs on the dirt in search of the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse and bragging rights as New York’s finest in the Sim. The race features four three-year olds, eight four-year olds and two five-year olds with nine of the entries being previous Stakes winners.

Here is a closer look at the field:

#1
carnmore
nextmove barn
r hansen                              23/1

Out of the nextmove barn is this four year old DESTIN colt out of the Sim Mare OPEN MARRIAGE. He has finished in the money in all five of his career starts and comes in off a win in his last start which was way back in mid August. He was impressive in that one with 107 speed and edged out runner-up CHATTER FC by just over a length. All but one of his starts to date have come at a mil but I think he will handle the extra distance well and might be a nice surprise out of the one hole.

#2
my old boss
trotter6 barn
l radzinski                           14/1

Out of the trotter6 barn is this three year old LAOBAN colt out of the Sim Mare ROLLWITHTHEPUNCHES. He ran career best 113 speed in a win at this same track and distance in an Allowance Race win back in September and if he can repeat that speed he should be one to watch. He will look to run in the middle of the pack in the early going and should have lots left in the tank as tehy head for home. He should garner lots of attention from the locals at the betting windows.

#3
sell sol
aphenomenon barn
d zordich                            9/2

Out of the aphenomenon barn is this four year old SOLOMINI colt out of the Sim Mare BUY THE MOON. He  has just one win this year and his last two starts resulted in a fifth place finish at the “Ucanda Dirt Route” and a twelfth place finish at the G2 “Bluegrass Cup Classic”. Despite those results, he goes off as the early morning favorite and his speed numbers are good enough to compete with this group and he should be able to find a spot on the board.

#4
frankie forests
newyorker barn
f oxon                                   23/1

Out of the newyorker barn is this three year old FRANK CONVERSATION colt out of the Sim Mare SAINT HIGABOO. He had finished in the money in eight of his twelve career starts including five wins. Two back he was victorious at the “ESR State Capital Stakes” where he ran 113 speed at this distance and went off at similar odds. He comes in well rested and could be a nice long shot pick and should be in the mix.

#5
otro banquero
bighaack barn
m scott                6/1

Out of the bighaack barn is this four year old CENTRAL BANKER colt out of the Sim Mare ENCOSTA DE HALO. He began 2022 with a gate to wire win on the turf at the “New York Local Championship Stakes” when he ran 115 speed at this same distance. An attempt at winning the same race on the dirt resulted in a runner-up finish in May and in his last start he was runner-up at that race again on the turf. He has had lots of success at this distance and should be one to watch as he competes out of the five hole.

#6
mob assassin vii
cosanostra2 barn
t ace                                      13/1

Out of the cosanostra2 barn is this three year old BELLAMY ROAD colt out of the Sim Mare BELLE OF THE BAYOU. He has five wins in six starts this year including the “New York Derby” with his only blemish being a sixth place at the G1 “Rod Edwards Commemorative Derby”. In his last start at this same distance he ran 111 speed in a win at an Allowance Race in California. He will face steeper competition here and may not get his sixth win of the year but he should be in a good position to find a spot on the board.

#7
full of mojo
worldclass12 barn
c bungard                            13/1

Out of the worldclass12 barn is this four year old TAPIN MOJO colt out of the Sim Mare HERE IS WG T. He has finished in the money in eighteen of his twenty-two career starts with all but five coming on the dirt. He comes in well rested with his last start being at the end of October when he finished third at the “New York Local Championship Stakes” which ran ten furlongs on the grass. He should have enough speed to compete with this field but may need a little extra to bring home the win.

#8
house lookin
aladar7 barn
d fendley jr                        78/1

Out of the aladar7 barn is this three year old scratch bred LOOKIN AT LEE (x CHESTER HOUSE x SHEIKH ALBADOU) colt. He is making his fifth career start and fifth Stakes start. All of the other starts have come at ESR  Sponsored contest races and he has a win and a third in those and his career best has been 97 speed. He should see a nice improvement in the upcoming 2023 campaign but he will be overmatched here and will not be a factor.

#9
banquero de lago
matador barn
d ledwith                            6/1

Out of the matador barn is this five year old CENTRAL BANKER stallion out of the Sim Mare ENCOSTA DE HALO. He has finished in the money in sixteen of his twenty-five career starts but has only hit the board twice in seven starts this year. He began the year at the G1 “Glenn Kegasus Tradition Killer” where he finished in last place and was unsuccessful in the New York Championships Stakes on both turf and dirt. He is the defending Champion of this race as he took home the Christmas Day 2021 version with a 114 speed and he will look to repeat despite his lack of success this year.

#10
callum
mlafort1 barn
j liddle                                  9/1

Out of the mlafort1 barn is this four year old BIG BROWN (x AFFIRMED x TOM ROLFE) colt. He comes in off a fourth place finish at the “Ethan Hollandia Dirt Route” where he ran 112 speed over the nine and a half furlong track. He is making just his third start for the ownership group with the other start resulting in a win at this same track and distance. He has the speed to compete and should be in the mix as they come down the stretch.

#11
sold you out
harrylan25 barn
w mclendon                       15/1

Out of the harrylan25 barn is this five year old THE LIEUTENANT (x INDIAN RIDGE x SUNDAY SILENCE) stallion. He has finished in the money in eight of his eleven career starts and his last win came at the “New York Local Championship Stakes” in May where he ran 114 speed at this same distance. He came from way back at that one and will likely look to use a similar strategy. The ownership group has a reputation for bringing their best and usually is a good bet to hit the board.

#12
reign train
vegasbaby barn
v ruzek                                 12/1

Out of the vegasbaby barn is this four year old LAOBAN colt out of the Sim Mare THE LAST KING CAT. He is making his fourth straight start in New York at this distance with the other three races resulting in a win, runner-up, and fifth place finish. His familiarity with the track could be an advantage but he will need more speed if he hopes to bring home the win against this group.

#13
mission tizzie
windsorred barn
z ayya                                   4/1

Out of the windsorred barn is this four year old MISSION IMPAZIBLE colt out of the Sim Mare KENT TIZZIE. He comes in off a seventh place finish at the “Opal Slew Dirt Route” where he ran 109 speed at this same distance. This broke a streak of back to back 113 speed wins with one coming at the “ESR Empire State Classic”. He goes off as the favorite and should be at or near the lead as they make the turn for home.

#14
akr bhaergarten
gotstobe barn
m mason                                             16/1

Out of the gotstobe barn is this four year old DR LARGE colt out of the Sim Mare IS THIS NAME TAKEN. He has finished in the money in eight of his fourteen career starts with his most recent being a fourth place finish at the “ESR Empire State Classic” where he ran career best 108 speed at this same distance. He will look to run mid pack in the early going and hope to have enough left in the tank to run down the early leaders.
