Movieland Futurity
Grade I / Group 1*CPU – Purse : $750,000
Restricted to 2 Year Olds
8.5 Furlongs | ~1700 Meters | One Mile and One SixteenthsFast Dirt

This weekend headlining the card in California there are two significant G1 races for two year olds.  On Saturday we have the G1, Movieland Starlet for the fillies and on Sunday we have this open field race the G1, Movieland Futurity.  At first glance I do not see any fillies that have a start in this race so it will only be colts and geldings.  There is a lot of 2 year old talent in both of these races and many of these horses we could seen again in some big races during their three year old season.  We have a full field of 14 horses in this race and the morning line odds have been posted and the gate draws have been completed.  Let us now take a preview of the field of horses that have secured a spot in this year’s G1, Movieland Futurity this Sunday in California.

1BK TOP HIT IIAZ2Gcocobella9T Highc9378%$249,90055.009/1

This is a Brown Gelding that is a scratch bred (TOP HIT x UNBRIDLED x SMART STRIKE).  He has been running sharp this season for the owner and he has hit the boards in a couple of his graded starts.  He was second in the G3, Buckeye Juvenile and second in the G1, End Of The Line Futurity.  Last time out we saw this horse run in Kentucky on 11/05/2022 going 8.5 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile.  He was out of the gate sharp and grabbed the lead early.  He would start to fade after the third call of the race and end up crossing the wire in eighth.  Not one of his best performances in that tough race, but the owner feels he could rebound sharply this weekend when they head out of the paddock representing the Drunken Jockeys Club residency.

2MANUKAMATASKOR2MuntouchedK Ledwith10340%$223,82042.0015/1

Here we have a Bay Colt that was sired by Air Force Blue (AIR FORCE BLUE x QUALITY ROAD x STORM CAT).  Three starts back we saw him get the win in the G3, Trixy Delight’s Special.   But in his three most recent starts he has failed to find the boards in two graded starts on the dirt and one on the turf.  Last time out he ran on the dirt track over in New York on 11/19/2022 going 9 furlongs in the G2, The Ransom.  He ran another flat race in this start and was never a factor when he crossed the wire in seventh with an 89 speed rating.  He needs to show up sharp here on Sunday and shake out the cobwebs for his owner and get another hit on the boards when he breaks from his post draw representing The Mecca residency.

3VINDICATIVE UNIONKY2Mpadrebri19B Peeples7386%$533,31535.5012/1

Next, we have this Brown Colt who was sired by Union Rags (UNION RAGS x VINDICATION x FORESTRY).  He hit it big two starts back when he ran here in California in the G1, Dell Computer Futurity when he came from tenth at the third call to get up at the wire for the win.  Then came his most recent start in Kentucky on 11/05/2022 when he went 8.5 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile.  He would find a tougher field to contend with in this race as he stepped up to travel an added one and a half furlongs from his prior start.  He would not have a good race this time out and crossed the wire in twelfth with a 93 speed rating.  He has a familiar jockey back in the saddle this weekend of which the owner hopes will help in getting his horse back on the boards when they break from their gate representing the GR Simsters.

4ALL IN ON THE TURNKY2MstormbornQ Cassell64100%$259,70029.0013/1

Here we have a Chestnut Colt who was sired by Curlin (CURLIN x DISTORTED HUMOR x UNBRIDLED).  Two starts back this horse ran in New York in the G1, Hopeless Stakes of which he hit the boards in third in his first graded started.  He was then sent back out for his most recent start in Pennsylvania on 10/16/2022 where he took a drop in Class to run 8 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Lovely Sheep Dirt Juvenile.  He was on point and sharp for this race and he seemed to like going around two turns for the first time when he grabbed the win at the wire with a 95 speed rating.  The owner calls in a familiar jockey for his horse this weekend and hopes he can help in finding this horse another hit on the boards in a G1 outing here in California when they head out of the paddock representing the GR Simsters.

5WORLD OF UNIONKY2GcocobellaJ Sands74100%$200,39522.508/1

This is a Bay Gelding who was sired by World Of Trouble (WORLD OF TROUBLE x UNION RAGS x KING KAMEHAMEHA).  This horse had been doing very well on this California track in his allowance starts for the owner.  Last time out the owner decided to move him up in Class and on 11/05/2022 he shipped his horse out to Indiana to run in a Listed Stakes, Hold The Pickles Dirt Juvenile.  He took well to the Indiana track and fired off a 101 speed rating to pick up the win.  The owner will again this weekend move his horse up in Class and give him his first graded start and adds on an extra half furlong in distance for this horse of which he appears he can handle.  Look for this horse a few strides back in the early going when they break from their gate representing the Drunken Jockey Club residency.

6VINDIFYKY2Mdontbetonme16T Ace8475%$1,698,000245.006/1

Here we have a Brown Colt that is a scratch bred (JUSTIFY x VINDICATION x DEPUTY MINISTER).   The owner must be proud of his Justify prodigy that has not been off the boards in his five most recent starts, and he picked up three wins in those races.  Back in July of this year he got his first graded win in the G1, Happy Independence Day.  He had a second place finish in the G1, Dell Computer Futurity and in the G1, Sparkling Wine Stakes.  This leads up to his most recent start on 11/05/2022 when he ran 8.5 furlongs in Kentucky in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile.  This late closer powered his way down the stretch for home after the third call to get up to win by one and a half with a 99 speed rating.  This accolade will make him one of the favorites in the morning line for this Sunday’s race.  He likes to close late, and the owner is in hope for another good trip out of his horse as they come out in the post parade representing the Elite Racing Club residency.

7WAR PERFORMER???2Mjastables3G Porter7386%$170,57720.5016/1

Coming out next, we have this Brown Colt who was sired by Performer (PERFORMER x WAR FRONT x WILD AGAIN).  After three unsuccessful attempts to break his maiden, he got the job done his fourth time out.  He has always run well in his races and after breaking his maiden he went on to get up for an Allowance win in New York at the distance of 8 furlongs.  This prompted the owner to move this horse up in Class for his most recent start that came on the track in Colorado on 10/22/2022 where he went 8 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Fact Of The Matter Dirt Juvenile.  He stayed just off the lead in the early going but when ask for more effort in his final stretch run, he got the job done as he picked up the win with a 93 speed rating.  This horse will be getting his first graded start here in California and the owner is in hope he can respond well as he again moves him up in Class representing the Empire State Racing residency.

8THE DRAGON PRINCEKY2MacegiftsC LeBlanc5380%$143,90017.5018/1

Next, we will see this Light Grey Colt who was sired by Cairo Prince (CAIRO PRINCE x BERNARDINI x STORM CAT).  Three starts back this horse ran his first graded start in the G1, Happy Easter.  It would not be a happy day for this colt, but he did show some promise as he crossed the wire in fifth.  He was then second in an Owner Restricted Listed Stakes, Hoosier Racing-Creole Gumbo sprint.  He was then sent out for his most recent trip to the track where he looked sharp going around two turns for the first on 10/08/2022 in Kansas at the distance of 8.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Cornfield County Dirt Juvenile.  He remained just off the lead in the early going of the race and then after the third call the jockey pushed his ride to get him to the front late in the race and pick up the win with a 97 speed rating. He will go off as the longest choice in the morning line, but we know this horse can go the distance, so how will he handle his first graded start when he comes out in the post parade representing the Hoosier Racing residency.

9CHARGE ALLEGEDKY2Gamir1717L Molinero7586%$218,12023.008/1

Here we have a Brown Gelding who was sired by Take Charge Indy (TAKE CHARGE INDY x GHOSTZAPPER x GONE WEST).  Two starts back this horse got his first stakes win when he got up in Delaware in a Listed Stakes, Sabbatarian Dirt Juvenile.  He was then sent back out to race in his most recent start in New York on 10/29/2022 going 8 furlongs in the G3, The Nashua Special.  This would be the first graded start for this horse and his first trip around two turns.  He responded very nicely to get in there with a second place finish with a 101 speed rating.  He has had several good performances in a row for the owner and he gets called up this Sunday to see what he can do in California when he heads out of the paddock to represent the Elite Racing Club residency.

10OLYMPIC CURLINKY2Grubber5C Gerhke6383%$608,70544.0011/1

This is a Chestnut Gelding that is a scratch bred (CURLIN x STREET CRY x UNBRIDLED).  Three starts back this horse was third in the G1, Happy Independence Day and then followed that up with a win in the G1, Hopeless Stakes.  Both of these races were around one turn.  This horse was then sent back out for his most recent outing in New York on 10/02/2022 where he would go 8 furlongs in the G1, Sparkling Wine Stakes.  I can’t say what the issue was that day unless he just did not like going around two turns for the first time.  He sluggishly ran under the wire in eleventh place with an 89 speed rating.  But the owner remains confident in that his horse can successfully go around two turns and has gotten him ready for the start here in California.  They will make their way out of the paddock with this horse’s favorite jockey up top representing the Northwest Racing Circuit.

11SCARED STATEKY2Gmeola7B Ironside64100%$192,27038.0014/1

Next out we will see this Bay Gelding who was sired by Silver State (SILVER STATE x CURLIN x SILVER GHOST).  This horse has had six career starts and has never finished worse than third.  He has four wins in those six starts and he proved he could compete at the graded level his last time out in Kentucky.  He ran on 10/23/2022 going 8 furlongs in the G3, The Cornstalk.  He broke fast out of the gate and got into the lead by the second call of the race.  He led this field around the 8 furlong course and picked up a nice win by two lengths with a 98 speed rating.  He is coming into Sunday’s race with two wins in a row and is seeking to make it three.  Look for this rabbit out of the gate fast.  Let him get too much distance on this field he might outlast them when he breaks from his gate to the cheers of an excited crowd.

12WALSHKY2McheadleD Givins5280%$282,78081.009/1

This is a Brown Colt who was sired by Maxfield (MAXFIELD x ENCOSTA DE LAGO (AUS) x UNBRIDLED). Three starts back he ran his first graded start, and he came in second in the G3, Trixy Delight’s Special.  He followed that up with another second place finish in the G1, End Of The Line Futurity.  He would then be sent out for his most recent start on 11/05/2022 in Kentucky where he would go 8.5 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile.  He faced a tough crowd in this race and fumbled in this start with an eleventh place finish and a 93 speed rating.  This horse needs to rebound after that start in Kentucky and the owner feels he has him ready to take on the challengers here in California this Sunday.  He calls in a favored jockey to this horse and looks to find another big hit on the boards.  They will come out of the paddock and head over to their gate representing the GR Simsters residency.

13PORTPATRICKKY2MfuturestarW Cahill4375%$171,84036.006/1

Next out we will see this Chestnut Colt who was sired by Quality Road (QUALITY ROAD x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x MR. PROSPECTOR).  He only has four career starts but he picked up three wins in a row which included a win in the G3, The Charcoal Breeder’s Cup in Ontario.  He was then sent out for his most recent start on 11/05/2022 when he went 8.5 furlongs in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile.  For this start only being his fourth trip to the track I feel placing fifth in this race only three strides back were pretty good for this horse.  This horse has done well for the owner thus far and he calls upon a familiar jockey to ride up top.  He hopes to see continued improved effort out of his colt that will be going off as the co-favorite in the morning line.  This horse will be coming out of the paddock at post time and over to his gate representing the Midas residency.

14LISTEN FIRSTKY2MdesplocalJ Stivers63100%$184,20021.2511/1

Breaking from the far outside gate will be this Chestnut Colt who was sired by Speightstown (SPEIGHTSTOWN x DISTORTED HUMOR x A.P. INDY).  This horse has had six career starts and has never finished off the boards.  He has three wins to his credit and has hit the boards in four listed stakes races.  Last time out we saw this horse run on the West Virginia track on 11/12/2022 going 8 furlongs.  This would be his first trip around two turns, and he responded very well as he got up for a gate to wire win with a 97 speed rating in the Tunaman Dirt Juvenile. That was a twelve point jump in his speed rating over his prior start in Ontario.  He will get his first graded start this weekend in California, and he will most likely break quickly out of the gate and be sent to the front.  He will make his way out in the post parade this weekend representing The Mecca residency.

Good luck to all owners and horses!

Skippy’s Watch List

5-World Of Union: First time graded starter.  Does he have the goods to strike the boards?

6-Vindify:  The BB champion gets the nod.  Does he pick up back to back G1 wins?

9-Charge Alleged:  G3 win with 101 sp last time out.  Does he drag the sp with him on Sunday?

Tarton’s Long Shot

***I have chosen two horses to look at***

8-The Dragon Prince:  This horse had an unusual start to his career but seems to have blossomed very nicely for the owner.  I also have faith in the breeder of this horse which seemed to have been gifted to the ACE master stables.  This is a first time graded starter and is going off at 18/1 in the morning line as the longest choice in the field.  After that 14 point jump in his speed rating and getting the win in a listed stakes, he deserves to be looked at as a possible spoiler in this race.  I know this owner and she is known to have an “ace” up her sleeve.  Putting this horse on some exotic tickets could pay with a good trip here.

14-Listen First:  After that last nice run in a listed stakes with a 12 point jump in his speed rating when going around two turns for the first time, I assure you we are listening.  He will be going off at 11/1 in the morning line and looks to be a good choice at these odds.  Seems to have a good breeding line that has worked, and he has never been off the boards in six career starts.  He is another first time graded starter looking to make a mark for himself, and he just could do it if he can continue to improve.  Another that might need to be on some of your exotic tickets at the betting window this Sunday.
