E R C PREAKNESS DERBY

.

Stakes – Sponsored – Purse : $100,000 – 3 Year Olds – Owner Restricted
9.5 Furlongs | ~1900 Meters | One Mile and Three Sixteenths Fast Dirt
.

The virtual racing world soldiers on, awaiting the return of the real thing, so the Elite Racing Club goes to virtual Pimlico Racecourse to hold its version of the the second leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crwn, the ERC Preakness Derby. Run at the same distance and under the same conditions as the Middle Jewel, a field of 14 club runners, including three upset seeking fillies, will scramble for the winner’s share of the $100,000 purse up for grabs. Racing conditions should be ideal as warmer weather works its way into the east coast, so a fast dirt track will be in order for Saturday. The victorious owner/trainer will also pick up the winner’s share of the stakes bonus points the club uses for its various awards.
.
Dontbetonme, who pulled off yet another stakes surprise taking the ERC Kentucky Derby two weeks ago with QUALIFIER, sends out his star after the second leg of the ERC Triple Crown. It was the second Derby victory for dontbetonme; his ROBERTO CAERLEON took the first two legs in 2017. The second through fourth finishers are back to try again, and 10 others will line up in the starting gate looking to grab some ERC glory.
.
The handicapper had a tough time separating the returnees, with DERBY THEORY a slight 9/2 fave over QUALIFIER, BEP, and VENGEFUL WRATH, all at 5/1. So, will the four returnees weather the two week turn around, or will one of the fresher new shooters step up to end QUALIFIER’s Triple Crown pursuit ? Let’s take a closer look at them and see what the figures may reveal.

QUALIFIER pp2 5/1 KY 3M dontbetonme16
.
Gleaming chestnut colt powered down the straight to get the money in the ERC Kentucky Derby, blasting a 104 SP# from the second flight. Scratch bred Protonico pacer (by Coronado’s Quest x Dehere) won a local bred allowance one back of that at 9 furlongs, banging out a 104 SP# stalking the early leader. He broke his maiden one before that at 6.5 panels, bagging a 91 SP# in a five horse heat. Looks like the horse to beat; may be seeking the Triple Crown in three weeks for the dontbetonme racing group.
.
.
.
BEP pp5 5/1 KY 3M ric480
.
ERC Kentucky Derby runner up goes again after a game try stalking the pace setter, catching a 102 SP#. Boisterous brown colt took the Vengeful Sea listed stakes at a mile and an eighth in his previous start, crushing a 102 SP# in a stalking trip. Scratch bred Honor Code hombre (by Danzig x Halo) was 3rd in a NW3L allowance at 9 panels in his 2020 debut, copping an 89 SP# in an even trip. This race seems to set up like the Derby; your humble correspondent looks to turn the tables on QUALIFIER at a bit shorter distance.
.
.
.
DERBY THEORY pp3 9/2 KY 3M amir1619
.
Disappointing as the favorite when a well beaten fourth in the ERC Kentucky Derby with a 92 SP#, amir1619 wheels him right back off two weeks rest. DERBY THEORY didn’t show his usual late kick then, but it was on full display one before that in the G1 Florida Derby – Derby Lock Prep, when he flew home for a close 2nd at 9 furlongs, banging out a 102 SP# from way back in the pack. Scratch bred Blame babalu (by Smart Strike x Nureyev), showed some mild late interest when 8th in the G1 Dreams Of Zambia in his prior try, bagging a 94 SP# at this distance. Burly bay colt may be an in and outer; due to be in, could be flying late in the lane.
.
.
.
VENGEFUL WRATH pp1 5/1 GB 3M jbcri71 .
Jbcri09 protege showed some good late foot to get 3rd in the ERC Kentucky Derby, pasting a 94 SP# from back in the pack, though nine lengths back of the first two finishers. Bucking bay colt won a NW3L allowance at 9 furlongs in his prior run, popping a 103 SP# with a last to first move. Sepoy stepper, out of the sim mare Catching A Flight (by Hard Spun x Forty Niner), took a NW2L allowance one before that at 8.5 panels, pushing a 99 SP# in a four horse affair. May be a little closer early, but big late run could fall short again at slightly shorter trip.
.
.
.
TAPPIN STREET CAP pp9 6/1 KY 3M bulldogtoo
.
The new blood starts with this Tapit tabby out of the grade placed sim mare Street Cap (by Street Sense x Capote) who went last to first in a NW4L allowance at 8.5 furlongs, whacking a 101 SP# in a five horse event. Long striding light grey colt came on late for 5th in the Tabitha listed stakes at 9 panels in his previous outing, wrangling a 100 SP# from way back. He won a NW2L allowance at 8.5 furlongs one before that, working out a 95 SP# from well back. The late running half of the harrylan entry could make things interesting coming down the lane with honest pace.
.
.
.
BIRDMEISTER pp4 15/1 KY 3M dunndowns
.
Rambling roan colt returns to the ERC stakes wars off a pair of allowance route scores, most recently at a mile in a NW4x allowance, zapping a 94 SP# in a five horse field. Bird Song bidder, out of the sim mare Speed Rusher (by Bodemeister x Pivotal) outran three others in an open allowance at 8.25 panels one back of that, zinging an 88 SP# with a nice stalking trip in his 2020 opener. He closed out 2019 with a closing 4th in the club’s Giants Causeway at a mile and a sixteenth, zipping a 95 SP# moving from last of eight. Dunnvilledowns trainee has won three of his last four, could be coming on late down the straight.
.
.
.
GIRSAKI pp8 14/1 FL 3G winterz2
.
Girvin guy out of the sim mare Gosaki (by Lookin At Lucky x Ghostzapper), has improved sharply “off the cut”; he won a NW4L allowance at 9 furlongs last time over, dropping a 94 SP in a stalking run for his third straight win. Bucking bay gelding took a local bred allowance one back of that at 8.5 panels, drilling a 98 SP# with the same stalking trip. He could have been had for $125,000 in a claimer at a mile one before that, drawing a 91 SP# from a little further off the pace. Runner from the winterz2 barn of the summerset group should be forwardly placed, could hang around to be involved in the decision at the wire.
.
.
.
SEA OF TAPIT pp6 9/1 KY 3M harrylanlow50
.
The “speed” half of the harrylan entry is this lithe light grey colt, who exits a stalking victory in a NW2L allowance at 8.5 furlongs, nailing a 96 SP#. Scratch bred Tapit tomcat (by Seattle Slew x Fappiano), tired to 8th in his previous start in the Mary Wanna Smoke listed stakes at 8.5 panels, notching a 92 SP# after chasing the pace setters. One before that he got 2nd in a NW2L allowance, again at 8.5 furlongs, nabbing an 88 SP# over a “good” track. Looks like he’s in there to help his stable mate get an quick pace, but could hang on for a minor share with best effort.
.
.
.
MAJOR TAZ pp14 10/1 KY 3M razer5
.
Leggy light grey colt just missed when 2nd in his 2020 opener in a NW2L allowance at 8.5 furlongs, pounding a 100 SP# in a mid pack trip. Tiznow toughie, out of the grade placed sim mare Major Project (by Giant’s Causeway x Seeking The Gold), was a so-so 6th in the club’s Giants Causeway, also at 8.5 furlongs, posting a 92 SP#. He was 2nd in a NW2L allowance at 8.5 panels one back of that, pasting an 88 SP# with some nice late foot. The other part of the summerset entry from his razer5 barn could benefit off his first try as a 3yo; improvement would put him in the thick of things in this heat.
.
.
.
RUNDOWN RECORD pp12 43/1 ENG 3F jbcri09
.
The first of our three fillies is this bay beauty, who was a gaining 2nd last out in an open allowance at 8.25 panels, copping an 84 SP# in a four horse race. Farhh femme fatale, out of the sim mare Symbileo (by Symboli Kris S x Galileo), was an even 3rd in her prior try at a mile in the same condition, casting an 83 SP# in a five horse field. One before that she won an open allowance at 7.5 furlongs, catching a 73 SP# in a stalking run. The second part of the jbcri09 entry seems less talented than her more accomplished stable mate, will need huge improvement to factor here.
.
.
.
MERKY LOVE pp13 34/1 KY 3M inmatedowns
.
Rambunctious roan colt got his initial win in an open maiden at 6.5 panels in latest, flashing an 89 SP# in a last to first move. Cupid cut up, out of the grade placed sim mare Merkin (by Danzig x Mr. Prospector) was a no threat 7th in an open maiden at 6 furlongs, flipping a 72 SP#. He started his brief career with a closing 6th in an open maiden at 5 furlongs, flinging a 71 SP#. Lightly raced runner out of the inmatedowns barn of the dunnvilledowns stable, stretches way out trying two turns for the first time, and makes his stakes debut; has much to over come to be a factor in this heat.
.
.
.
HARD BAND pp10 27/1 KY 3F amir1628
.
Our second distaffer, scratch bred Hard Spun honey (by Dixieland Band x His Majesty), got her first win an an open maiden at a mile and an eighth, ripping an 88 SP# from the back of the pack. Bodacious bay filly was a gaining 3rd one back of that in the same condition at 8.25 furlongs, rocking a 91 SP#. She finished off 2019 with a closing 2nd in an open maiden at 7 furlongs, rapping a 76 SP#. The other half of the amir1628 racing conglomerate should have no problem with the trip, but steps way up in class; tough task against some more seasoned foes.
.
.
.
STATELY WINGS pp7 31/1 FR 3G whaddyaat
.
Big bay gelding has changed hands a few times in his career, moving over to the whaddyat stable after a last out 4th in a $50,000 claimer at a mile, sticking an 81 SP# in an even effort. Wings Of Eagles warbler, out of the sim mare Kingman Station (by Kingman x Galileo) showed a little late foot for 3rd one back of that in a $100,000 claimer at 8.5 furlongs, stabbing an 87 SP#. He won his 2020 debut in a $20,000 claimer at 6 panels, stacking a 78 SP# in a four horse affair. Newfydowns runner makes his first foray out of the claiming ranks; appears to be in for a rude awakening with this group.
.
.
.
EXXAGGEXODUS pp11 43/1 CHI 3F covedowns
.
Our third distaffer is this bodacious bay maiden filly who comes off a closing 2nd in an open maiden at 7 panels, etching an 85 SP#. Exaggerator exerciser, out of the stakes winning sim mare Eastern Exodus (by Makfi x Monsun), was a no threat 5th in the same condition at 9 furlongs, eking out a 77 SP#. Her prior run was a nice 3rd at three quarters of a mile, earning a 75 SP#. Unlikely to keep up with these for long; don’t see her breaking her maiden here for the covedowns barn of the newfydowns group.
.
.
.
Good luck everybody and may they all come home fast, safe and sound.

Congrats ric!! BEP ran a great race! Could he be better than BEF? Dontbetonme’s horse ran well too. BEP ran 4 speed points faster than General Crook today in the Middle Jewel.

Congratulations to the winning connections – wait, that’s me ! Thanks everybody: the final time was surprising, hope it didn’t burn him out too much.

See ya in June at Belmont for The New Yorker, and at Santa Anita for juvenile sprinters.
