Grade I / Group 1 – Purse : $750,000 – 4 Years and Older – Fillies and Mares
14 Furlongs | ~2800 Meters | One Mile and Three Quarters Fast Dirt

.

From Meydan Raceourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Sand Castle Festival marches on with The Desert Lady Stayer, a Group 1 dirt marathon for older fillies and mares. They’ll go a mile and three-quarters (or 14 furlongs for the stateside fans, or ~2800 meters for the locals), over what should be a fast dirt oval. They’re vying for the winner’s share of the $750,000 purse up for grabs, and ten of them could add a G! badge to their accomplishments. We have four prior G1 winners, a G2 winner and a pair of G3 winners.
.
Morning line favoritism was bestowed on HOOD COUNTRY CLUB at 7/2 on the board, while the handicapper settled on SHADY CHOICE as the second choice at 5/1 odds. Defending champ WAR CAT CADET seeks the repeat at 8/1 odds, and there are two contenders at 8/1, another contender at 9/1, while the rest of the field are at double digit odds. Let’s take a closer look at them in entry point order, and see if we can discern who might win this lung busting affair.

SERIOUS RUNNING……..OK……4F…………graywolf7……..pp 6…9/1
.
Heading up the entry points leaders is this brash, brown four year old filly, who makes her initial start of 2020 . Her 2019 finale was an uninvolved 7th in the G1 The Empire State Stayer at this distance, copping a 103 SP# though never close. Den’s Legacy dame, out of the G1 winning, million dollar earning sim mare Coyote Smuggler (by A.P. Indy), passed tired horses late when a closing 8th against males in the G1 Breeders Bowl Classic at 10 furlong, catching a 112 SP# from way back. She got her 2nd G1 victory one back of that in The Great Dane at this route, casting a 103 SP# after trailing early. 2019 The New Yorker champion returns off a three month vacation; faces some tough foes here, may need one to get back to fighting weight. Top entry points runner and top $$$ earner eligible to blow them out of the water if ready for the graywolf racing group.

.
MY AMERICAN LADY……..KY……4F…………ddkstables1……..pp 9…8/1

One before that she won her 2nd striaght G1 event, the Birmingham Stakes at 10 furlongs, flipping a 110 SP# with a furious late run. Ddkstables1 protege looks like she’ll appreciate the added distance, look for her coming late in the lane.
.
.
.
GHOSTLY DAYS……..KY……6F…………..crackpot……..pp 3…18/1
.
Ghostzapper gal, out of the G3 winning sim mare Judgment Days (by Giant’s Causeway) seeks 3rd straight marathon score after taking a hot race allowance at two miles, bagging an 81 SP# in a four horse affair. Runner from the crackpot racing group was 5th in this event last year; may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but could have a say in the decision on best effort.
.
.
.
BERNIES MARE……..KY……5F…………..primus3……..pp 8…14/1
.
Owner/trainer primus3 sends out this bay five year old mare afrer her 3rd straight victory at this idtance, and 4th overall after winning the G3 The Miss Bourbon Street, blasting a 111 SP# stalking the early pace. Speedy sort should be part of the early pace battle, could shake loose and say buh-bye.
.
.
.
SHADY SONG……..IRE……5F…………..chilichili……..pp 7…5/1
.
Light grey five year old mare was 2nd best behind BERNIE’S MARE in the G3 The Miss Bourbon Street at this route in latest, copping a 105 SP# from way back in the pack. One before that she was a fast closing 2nd in the One Pot listed at 12 furlongs, crashing a 109 SP# from well back. Chillchili trainee should like this trip, but has been 2nd best in five of her last six outings; will chugging late in the straight, could get there on top try.
.
.
.
GREATER LOGIC……….KY……4F…………plano16……..pp 4…18/1
.

.
.
HOOD COUNTRY CLUB……….IRE……5F…………theduke100……..pp 12…7/2

One before that she won the Apple Carbon listed, again at a mile and a half, drilling a 115 SP# with a powerful stretch run. Late runner from theduke100 racing barns has the turf to dirt angle working for her; should loom latge in the lane if the dirt is to her liking.
.
.
.
SILVER BULLIT……….KY……4F…………cadethot……..pp2…11/1
.

One back of that she won the Golden Tale listed at a mile and a quarter, smoking a 110 SP# in a pace pressing performance. Speedster from the cadethot racing operation stretches way out here, could hold on for a share with a softer pace.
.
.
.
LA CIENAGA……….iRE……5F…………haack……..pp 10…8/1
.
Bodacious bay five year old mare flew home for 2nd in an open allowance at 12 furlongs in her 2020 debut, nailing a 105 SP# from well back in the pack. Teofilo tapper, out of the stakes winning sim he-mare Nasty Haack (by Sea The Stars), won in the same condition and at the same distance in her previous outing, running them over in the straight, notching a 102 SP# in a five horse field. In her prior try she failed to make up any ground on the leaders when 4th in the G2 THe Radiant at this route, nabbing a 96 SP#. Runner from the haack racing stables needs to show more to upset this group, though the handicapper treats her kindly at 8/1 on the morning line.

.
.
ALLY HER PARTERNS………PA……5F…………aguadeep1……..pp 5…18/1
.
Partner’s Hero prancer, out of the stakes winning sim mare Silk Spectre (by Medicean), was an even 3rd in latest, the Petes Song listed stakes at 11 furlongs, hanging a 106 SP#. One before that she was 3rd around the course in the Denoia listed stakes at 13 panels, heaving a 100 SP#. Aguadeep1 protege seems one paced, unlikely to get the lead with these, and unlikely to make any progress down the lane in this heat.
.
.
.
MR TUNE HER UP……….SAF……4F……….graywolf9……..pp 11…17/1
.

Failed to make an impact in any of her prior graded stakes appearances and stretches way out here; difficult to recommend.
.
.
.
Z TO THE MAX……….CZE……4F……….graywolf9……..pp 13…58/1
.
Graywolf’s 3rd runner is this light grey four year old filly, who returns to the dirt since her last try in late 2018.
