Dubai (UAE) Saturday, February 22, 2020 — 3:50:00 PM EST | Race ID : 2354534
The Khartoum Challenge III
Grade II / Group 2*CPU – Purse : $375,000
Restricted to 4 Year Olds and Older
10 Furlongs | ~2000 Meters | One Mile and One Quarter Fast Dirt

I am headed to Dubai for the running of The Khartoum Challenge III where EOY, HOY Giant’s Kash will be headlining the card, but who will not be going off as the favorite in the morning line.  There are many well decorated horses in this field of fourteen that will be contending for a G2 win here in Dubai.  They will travel a distance of 10 furlongs on what will be listed a Fast Dirt track.  The odds makers have made their selections and their morning line odds have been released.  The post positions have been drawn and the horses are looking very nice over at the barns.  So let us take a quick preview of all the entries in the running of The Khartoum Challenge III Stakes here in the sunny sands of Dubai.

Post Position: 1

Horse/Odds:  Frickendosome  10/1

Sire: Scratch Bred (TAPIT x SEEKING THE GOLD x DYNAFORMER)

Owner: asrstar0

Jockey: N Labreche

This five year old Light Grey Horse had a nice run his last trip to the track in California back on 12/28/2019 when he ran in a Owner Restricted, Listed Stakes, the Race Series for ASR11.  He ran a speed rating of 116 in that race which was good enough for a second place finish.  He will need to show he has the ability to take a jump in Class and contend outside his residency in this race.  The owner has placed the call to jockey, N Labreche from Italy to come in and take this trip with his horse.  They will be headed out at post time representing the All-Star Racing residency.

Post Position: 2

Horse/Odds: Nuka Insanity  6/1

Sire: Scratch Bred (MEDAGLIA D’ORO x MR. PROSPECTOR x DANEHILL)

Owner: lenny21

Jockey: P Jones

This five year old Light Grey Gelding had a productive 2019 season and has already started out the year with a quick win on 01/25/2020 in Pennsylvania when he ran in a Listed Stakes, Serpentine Son Dirt Route.  He put up a nice 116 speed as he clipped the heels of the front runners until the third call.  He took control and was able to hold off a big closing charge by his rivals to grab the win by a head.  He will have jockey, P Jones coming in from Sweden to take the trip up top with him here in Dubai.  They will pair up together and make way to their gate representing the GR Simsters residency.

Post Position: 3

Horse/Odds: Never Been Born  11/1

Sire: Galileo

Owner: mtksn00bs

Jockey: J Bradley

One may look at the breeding of this five year old Bay Gelding and expected a big turf runner.  But he has proven otherwise in his career with preference on the dirt.  He made his last trip to the track on 01/25/2020 in Japan in the G3, The Heaven Stakes.  He was closing up the gap fast as he made a closing charge for the wire, but came up a head short to come in second in that race.  He ran a respectable 114 speed that day for his efforts.  His owner places the call to jockey, J Bradley who will be coming in from Newmarket to take the ride up top with this horse in attempts to pick up this horses first Graded win as they take a jump in Class.  In this horses best efforts he like running just off the lead and that is where the jockey will try to place this horse when they break from what should be a nice gate draw for this horses running style.  They will be heading out to the track on Saturday representing the Blazing Saddles residency.

Post Position: 4

Horse/Odds: Voyage Of Charon  21/1

Sire: Pioneerof The Nile

Owner: cadetprime

Jockey: P Jetter

The owner makes the call to Ireland to contract with jockey, P Jetter to take the trip with his four year old Bay Colt for this outing.  This colt will be making his début to race as a four year old when he takes to the track on Saturday.  He ran on 07/07/2019 in Ontario in the G1, Clerk Of Scales Stakes when he fired like a rocket after the third call to pick up the win by a head at the wire.  This G1 winner gets little respect from the odds makers in the morning line.  This likely due to speed ratings when compared to other contenders in this race of which his jockey will need to find a little more bounce in his horses step when he makes his closing charge. They will be headed out at post time here in Dubai representing the Empire State Racing residency.

Post Position: 5

Horse/Odds: Excursionist  57/1

Sire: Deep Impact

Owner: davarto3

Jockey: J Stivers

This four year old Bay Colt takes a hit by the odds makers in their morning line as he takes a big jump in Class to compete at this level.  He has never seen the winners circle at the Stakes level before but will attempt to hit the boards as he continues his transition from turf to dirt.  His last outing came on 01/24/2020 in Germany at a distance of 10 furlongs in a $48,700 NW3L Allowance of which he crushed the field with a 5 ½ length win.  He will have jockey, J Stivers from Deauville in the saddle for this trip.  They will need to prove that this horse can rise up and compete with this seasoned field of contenders when they head to their post representing the Midas residency.

Post Position: 6

Horse/Odds: Lookin Good Cadet  9/2

Sire: Lookin At Lucky

Owner: nuthouse

Jockey: B Wu

This six year old Bay Horse will get the nod from the odds makers as their top pick in the morning line when he steps onto the track going off at 9/2 odds.  This horse last raced on 12/09/2019 in Mexico in a $30,000 Allowance where he went gate to wire to get up for a nice 3 ½ length win.  This horse is a prior G3 badge earner and will be headed out to attempt to pick up a new accolade for his owner.  If he can come up with another 119 speed rating as he moves up in Class, the rest of the field had better be ready to make chase after this front runner.  Jockey, B Wu who is a seasoned jockey coming in from Paris will get the mount up top to take this long trip across the dirt with this veteran horse that will be the patriarch in this field.  They will be head to their gate at post time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.

Post Position: 7

Horse/Odds: Sound Rationale  7/1

Sire: Curlin

Owner: flagdown4

Jockey: T Brewer

This five year old Bay Horse is out of the EOY Award winning mare Unbridled Logic.  This horse picked up his GP badge back in March of 2019 in the G2, Betrando Handicap and has found multiple Listed Stakes wins during his career.  He has twenty lifetime starts and has only missed the boards five times.  In his last outing which was on 01/11/2020 in Hong Kong he came just of the lead to close nicely in the Seeking Slew Dirt Route at a distance of 10.5 furlongs and picked up the win by 2 ¾ lengths.  When he heads out on Saturday he will have jockey, T Brewer from Hong Kong back in the saddle for this trip.  They have paired together in the past and will be heading out onto the track to represent the Pastures of Green residency.

Post Position: 8

Horse/Odds: Barber Of Bayonne  14/1

Sire: Scratch Bred (WILL TAKE CHARGE x WILD AGAIN x NIJINSKY 2ND)

Owner: megaman42

Jockey: S Ledwith

This five year old Roan Horse is a Listed Stakes winner that has shown difficulty when stepping up in Class to challenge against Graded company.  He looks to break that trend when he goes out to his gate with jockey, S Ledwith from Surrey taking to the irons.  He will need a strong whip to get his horse into a competitive position in this race and find that fire in the belly of this horse and prove he has what it takes to hit the boards against a Graded field.  This horse has not had a trip to the boards since May of last season when he picked up a Listed Stakes win in the His Roos Dirt Route.  It would be considered a nice effort if this horse hits the boards in this race here in Dubai when they head out to represent the DelPenn National residency come post time.

Post Position: 9

Horse/Odds: Giant’s Kash  7/1

Sire: Giant’s Causeway

Owner: kashbarn3

Jockey: M Scott

This four year old Brown Colt is a multiple G1 winner which includes trips to the winner circle in last year’s Bluegrass Derby and the Breeders’ Bowl Classic.  If he earns anymore badges they are going to have to add more space in the sim.  He will be the definite headliner in this race, but he did not catch the favor of the odds makers to go off as their top choice in this race after a disappointing trip in his last outing.  He last ran on 11/20/2019 in the G1, The Japan Dirt Cup going 9 furlongs.  He showed up fifth in that race and was 5 ½ lengths back when he failed to run down the four horses in front of him.  But everyone has an off day and I look for this horse to have the ability to rebound and put up a good effort here in Dubai.  He will have jockey, M Scott coming in from Thailand to take the ride with him.  This first time pairing will head out to their post on Saturday representing the East-West Connection residency.

Post Position: 10

Horse/Odds: Struggle Wasteland  23/1

Sire: Lookin At Lucky

Owner: ruler69

Jockey: T Tippett

This four year old Bay Colt has had a fairly successful Allowance career but he has made a couple of unsuccessful attempts to move up in Class and hit the boards at the Stakes levels.  He will be going off as one of the longer choices in this field due to the odds makers feeling he lacks in experience against this rough and tumble field of contenders.  This horse last ran on 01/25/2020 in Japan at a distance of 9 furlongs in the G3, The Heaven Stakes.  He ran his best speed rating in his career of 107 which was only good enough to cross the wire in seventh place.  Jockey, T Tippett who is a local jockey here in Dubai will get the call for the ride up top when they head out to their post to represent The Minnesota Testbarn Residency.

Post Position: 11

Horse/Odds: First Year Bali  18/1

Sire: Bal A Bali

Owner: wfhold

Jockey: R Wilhite

This five year old Brown Horse has had his fair share of both turf and dirt runs.  He just seems not able to find the ticket to get to the winners circle at the Stakes levels.  His last trip out he ran on 01/11/2020 in Hong Kong going 10.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Seeking Slew Dirt Route where faded back from the leaders to cross the wire in third.  He has several Graded level races under his belt, but all met with disappointing performances and results.  Jockey, R Wilhite from South Africa is contracted to take the ride with this horse when they head out to their post come race time.

Post Position: 12

Horse/Odds: Tete Erdloch  6/1

Sire: Temple City

Owner: sabbath2

Jockey: R Gibson

This five year old Bay Horse has picked up his SW and GP badges in past performances and is seeking that elusive Graded win here in Dubai.  He last ran on 01/18/2020 here in the UAE traveling 8 furlongs in the G3, The Khartoum Challenge l.  He was met with disappointment in that race and failed to hit the boards with a lack luster speed rating of which we have seen much better from him in previous outings.  Perhaps this distance will be more to his liking come Saturday when he gets a very familiar jockey in R Gibson from Norway back in the saddle for this trip.  They have paired up together many times in the past and had nice results together.  I look for this horse to compete here if he can successfully maneuver out of this gate draw and find his favored spot to run.  They will be headed out at post time to represent the European Union Racing Organization residency.

Post Position: 13

Horse/Odds: Pound The Rock  85/1

Sire: No Nay Never

Owner: nycowboy313

Jockey: E Bernstein

This four year old Bay Colt is coming back after a long layoff.  He last ran back in April of 2019 after making three G1 trips in a row that were not kind to him.  His owner brings back his G1 badge earner to see if he is now ready to step back onto the track and compete successfully.  The odds makers were ruthless in making this horse their longest choice in the field at 85/1 odds.  This very well could be too big of a snub in their morning line for this horse and I will side on the part of the owner that he had a plan in place for his horse.  The owner has made the call to jockey, E Bernstein who is a seasoned veteran jockey out of Germany to take the ride with his colt here in Dubai.  This could be a good one to Tip this week and take a chance on.  This horse draws what looks to be a challenging post position in this race for him that he will need to show he can handle when this pairing heads out to represent the Empire State Racing residency.

Post Position: 14

Horse/Odds: Five Senses  6/1

Sire: Street Sense

Owner: gowans7

Jockey: B Schardein

This five year old Bay Horse is a G2 badge earner and is coming off a nice win in his last trip to the track which was on 12/28/2019 in Texas in the G3, The End Of Year Stakes at a distance of 11 furlongs.  He made a winning closing charge down the stretch to get up for the win by ¾ lengths with a 118 speed rating.  He looks to bring that speed forward as he moves back up in Class to challenge here in Dubai.  I do have concerns for him coming out of this far outside gate but he will have seasoned jockey, B Schardein from out of Denmark on top to help him in his efforts.  If together this pair can overcome a couple of unfortunate circumstances and this horse fires with that speed as he did in his last race he could be a horse to watch.  They will head out on Saturday to their far outside gate representing the Blazing Saddles residency.

Good luck to all owners and horses!

Skippy’s Watch List

Giant’s Kash:  Looks to rebound and should be on your tickets to be in the mix.

Lookin Good Cadet:  Coming in after  a nice 119 speed in his last outing could get him there.

Five Senses:  Looks game to be on the boards if he can handle that outside gate.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Pound The Rock:  I am going to play him on my exotic tickets at this price and trust the owner chose wisely to bring his horse back after a ten month layoff.  I am hoping for a surprise performance when I place my bets at the window.

I do not pick winners and losers anymore…just the horses that I think will be fighting for the wire. I had you both in that mix and the other horse I looked to be in the mix came in 4th. Gratz to both of you Cadet and Kashbarn. It was definitely a good race and an enjoyable one to preview.

good picking Naskippy, came close to the boxed trifecta which seems harder to nail in these grade level races.
