Elite Racing Club’s Giants Causeway for 2 year olds to decide club championship

GIANTS CAUSEWAY
.
Stakes – Sponsored – Purse : $100,000 – 2 Year Olds – Owner Restricted
8.5 Furlongs | ~1700 Meters | One Mile and One Sixteenths Fast Dirt
.
The Elite Racing Club finishes off its annual trainers’ championship racing series with the running of the GIANTS CAUSEWAY. Contested in the shadows of the twin spires of Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, a field of eight club two year old runners will go 8.5 furlongs (or ~ 1700 meters for the metric set) over what should be a fast main dirt track looking to advance their owner’s Derby Fever hopes.
.
The 2019 club championship will be claimed by either jbcri09, who leads dontbetonme by 8 points, with summerset just behind down 10 points. Along with the championship will go the bragging rights that will last through 2020. With that, there also will be some Derby Day dreams dashed and/or enhanced, as the other entrants will compete vigorously for the win photo, as happens in all these club events.
.
An interesting heat, with a good mix of front runners and closers, which should make for an entertaining event. And a big shout out to the Churchill Downs staff for helping make our season finale memorable. Let’s take a closer look at them in post position order and see what the numbers may reveal.

MAJOR TAZ KY 2M rac10 K Bortz 7/2
.
Heading up the post parade is this Tiznow toughie out of the graded placed stakes winner Major Project (by Giant’s Causeway) who was a fast closing 2nd last time out at this distance in a NW2L allowance, punching an 88 SP# in a mid pack trip. Light grey colt broke his maiden one before that at 7.5 panels, pushing an 84 SP# with a nice far turn move. His prior run was a nice 2nd at 7 furlongs in an open maiden, popping an 87 SP# after getting to the front in the stretch run. Owner/trainer summerset pins his club championship hopes on this runner who has hit the board in all five life time starts.

DOUBLE CONQUEST CA 2M dontbetonme16 M Hibby 9/2
.
Championship contender dontbetonme sends out this burly bay colt, who took a NW4L allowance at this route in his latest, smacking a 90 SP# moving from the back of the pack. Conquest Fahrenheit cut up, out of the stakes placed sim mare Double Bass (by Sundarban), settled for 2nd one before that after getting the lead turning for home in the Kirbys Condo Invite Stakes at seven-eighths of a mile, sticking a 90 SP# in a pace pressing performance. One back of that he won the Snow Squall listed stakes at 6 furlongs, stashing an 86 SP# from the middle of the field. Tractable runner can be close early or lay back in the pack waiting to make his move; jockey tactics may be the key to his chances.

WHO DARES GRINS CA 2M jb3tackle B Fairfield 12/1
.
Speedster from the jb3commish stable got his initial win last time over at a mile in an open maiden, crushing an 86 SP# in a wire to wire score. Bruising bay colt held for 3rd one back of that in an open maiden at 7 furlongs, copping a 76 SP# after setting all the pace. Game A.P. guy, out of the sim mare Integrated (by Elusive Quality), faded to 5th after an early speed duel at 6.5 panels in an open maiden, catching a 72 SP# while unable to get to the front. Improving sort should be a major part of the early pace tussle; could shake loose if unchallenged and upset this group at 12/1 on the morning line.

4
BIRDMEISTER KY 2M dunndowns P Cadigan 8/1
.
Ghostly roan colt exits an impressive win at this distance in a NW4L allowance, whacking an 89 SP# in a last to first move. Bird Song bro, out of the sim mare Speed Rusher (by Bodemeister), was a fair 4th one before that in a NW3L allowance at a mile, wrangling an 82 SP# moving from the back of the pack. His previous outing was a late running win in a NW1x allowance at 4.5 panels, wringing a 74 SP# in a four horse affair. Stretch runner from the dunnvilledowns racing group seems to be n in and outer; due to be out this time around, but could get an in the money finish on top try.

STREET NINE KY 2M amir1633 B Rocker 3/1
.
Scratch bred son of Street Sense (by El Prado) got up for 2nd last out in a NW2L allowance at this trip over this strip, bashing an 89 SP# from the back of the pack. Light grey colt got his first win one back of that in an open maiden at a mile, blasting a 91 SP# with a nice late run. He started his career with a fast closing 2nd in an open maiden at 5 panels, bagging a 77 SP#. Stretch runner from co-founder amir1605‘s stable should be gaining late in the lane; handicapper likes his chances as the co-favorite at 3/1 odds.

6
SMART FROSTY KY 2M harrylanexp6 D Sherman 3/1
.
Current club champ harrylan’s reign will end, but no matter as he has the other co-favorite going to post after a front running score in a NW2L allowance at a mile, cruising to a 90 SP#. Frosted fella, out of the G3 winning sim mare Smart Zapper (by Smart Strike), settled for 2nd in the same condition at 7.5 panels, crushing a 90 SP# after a long pace duel. Light grey colt won his debut in an open maiden at 7 furlongs, copping a 76 SP# after an early pace battle. May have to handle another early fractions fight, but could get loose on an early lead and say come and catch me. Can do.

HANNAH’S SONG KY 2G newfydowns J Yount 7 21/1
.
Owner/trainer newfydowns takes a shot with this oh-for-seven roan gelding, who showed some improvement in latest try, getting 3rd in an open maiden at 5.5 furlongs, grabbing a 77 SP# with a strong stretch run. Bird Song bandito, out of the sim mare Hannah The Cool (by Take Charge Indy), was a no impact 7th one before that in a $50,000 claimer at 7 panels, getting a 69 SP# showing a little late foot. In his prior run he was a dreadful 10th in an open maiden at a mile with a 68 SP#. Looks outclassed with these, but hey, you gotta be in it to win it.

VENGEFUL WRATH GB 2M jbcri71 L Cardinal 5/1
.
Last out of the paddock is this bucking bay colt, who finally got his first victory in an open maiden at 7.5 panels, zapping an 86 SP# in a mid pack trip. Sepoy stepper, out of the sim mare Catching A Flight (by Hard Spun)was runner up in his previous start in the same condition at the same distance, zinging an 85 SP# in his fifth straight place bet finish. One before that was a just miss 2nd in an open maiden at seven-eighths of a mile, zipping an 80 SP# after a powerful stretch run. Current points leader jbcri09 sends this one out to clinch his second club championship; distance should suit, will be chugging home through the straight; solid chance.

Good luck everybody, and may they all come home fast, safe and sound.

Congratulations to amir1605 and connections on an authoritative victory – looks like you have a Bluegrass Derby hopeful there.

And a new champeen will take over the throne on 1/1, as jbcri09 celebrates his second club championship with a solid 2nd place finish.

The co-founders showed us how it’s done !!!

Thanks ric and thanks everyone. My real derby hopeful is attempting a G1. But comes May 2020, we will see who has the better chance.
