Grade I / Group 1*CPU - Purse : $750,000
Restricted to 2 Year Olds, Fillies Only
8.5 Furlongs | ~1700 Meters | One Mile and One Sixteenths Fast Dirt
The prestigious Movieland Starlet will be taking place in California this Saturday with a full field of fourteen well decorated 2 year old fillies taking to what will be listed as Fast Dirt track come post time. This field of some of the brightest filly star will travel a distance of 8.5 furlongs to try and capture the trophy and get their picture taken in the winner’s circle in what will be most of these fillies last trip to the track in 2019. They will surely be rested and prepped for their upcoming 3 year old campaign in the 2020 season and look forward to more prestigious racing this upcoming year. They will be competing for their share of a $750,000 purse which is almost secondary to winning the Movieland Starlet. The odds makers have done their work, made their choices and set the morning line odds for this event. The post positions have been drawn and jockeys and owners must plan as to how they will handle their horses as they leave the gate. There is a little chatter around the barns regarding Ruler Of Justice, She Walksin Beauty, and Pleasure Of War as to how they will all play together in the same sandbox here for the running of the Movieland Starlet in sunny California. Let’s take a quick preview of all the horses in this race and see how they stack up against one another in this race.
Post Position: 1
Horse/Odds: Crafty Novel 14/1
Jockey: W Kewmwa
This Bay filly has been running a tough schedule ever since her début when she hit the track for the first time back in February of this year. She has seven career starts and has found the boards in three of those outings. Her last trip to the track was on 11/02/2019 when she ran here in California in the G1, Breeder’ Bowl Juvenile Filly where she found a disappointing ending to her trip going 8.5 furlongs. She came to the wire way back in 12th place that day with an 83 speed rating. She will be seeking to redeem herself and will have jockey, W Kewmwa from Arizona taking to the saddle to help her find her footing and find a little more fire in her step. They will be representing the Empire State Racing residency come post time.
Post Position: 2
Horse/Odds: Dawn Dubai 13/1
Jockey: D Stair
The lightng99 master stables scour their stables and find this Bay filly to come out as their second entry in this race. She won a Listed Stakes, The Loaded Gun back in August of this year and then proceeded to try a couple of runs at the Graded level of which were not fruitful for her. Her last trip to the track she ran in New York in the G3, The Adam’s Apple going the distance of 8 furlongs. She showed up to the wire in 6th and was 3 ½ lengths back. She did run a 92 speed rating that day of which she will be looking to improve upon here in the Movieland Starlet with jockey, D Stair taking to the irons. They too will be headed to the gates representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 3
Horse/Odds: A.P. Kingdom 11/1
Sire: Animal Kingdom
Jockey: J White
This Chestnut filly started her career on the turf of which she proved to have success. But she made the switch to dirt in her last two races and has shown nice results as well. She has seven career starts and never missed the boards. She had a very nice run in her last trip to the track in Czech Republic in the G2, Camlaw Stakes at a distance of 8.5 furlongs. She went gate to wire in that race and took a nice bump in her speed rating that day with a 91 run. Her owner contracts with a local jockey here in California in J White that will try to bring out a repeat performance for this filly. She is making a long travel to get here for this race of which we will be looking to see how she handles making this long trip from the Czech Republic.
Post Position: 4
Horse/Odds: Verraprado 12/1
Jockey: B F Abman
This Light Grey Filly is coming off two back to back Listed Stakes win. She closed from near back of the pack in both of those races to make it to the wire first by very narrow margins. Her last outing was in New Mexico in the Pharsea Seattle Dirt Juvenile. She closed nicely and started making up some ground after the second call. At the third call she poured on the steam and started picking off more horse and whittled her way to the wire to come in 1st by a mere head. Jockey, B F Abman from Kentucky will be taking the mount for this trip as this filly heads out in her first ever Graded race. She is taking a concerning big jump in Class for this race when she heads to the post to line up for this run.
Post Position: 5
Horse/Odds: She Walksin Beauty 9/1
Sire: Scratch Bred: DISTORTED HUMOR x SEATTLE SLEW x ROBERTO
Jockey: V Jennings
The owner of this Bay filly when interviewed stated that he feels his horse has a good shot in this race, but there are entries that will be challenging in trying to get his horse to the wire first. This prior G3 winner found her way to the winner’s circle back in June of this year in the G3, Independence Day Stakes in Vermont. She stalked the pace in that race and when she needed it most she fired to get up for a 1 ¼ lengths win. Her last outing to the track came on 10/12/2019 in Washington when she went out to run against the boys traveling a distance of 7 furlongs. She fired but did not come up with the performance to get another trip to the boards when she showed up 4th and was 2 ¼ lengths off. She gets jockey, V Jennings from Arkansas to take to the saddle for this race as he attempts to take this filly a distance going around two turns for the first time. Her jockey will need to bring his bag of tricks and also find some more fire in her legs to get a win. They will be heading out at post time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 6
Horse/Odds: Ruler Of Justice 6/1
Jockey: L Radzinski
I think this my first opportunity to preview a horse with a Justify sire. This Bay filly looks like a good one to look at and preview. She is a prior G1 winner when she showed up at the wire first in Kentucky in the G1, The Darley Stakes. She hit a speed of 93 that day to take control at the third call of that race. Her last trip to the track however she met with a little disappointment when she failed to hit the boards for the first time in her young career. She ran on 11/02/2019 here in California in the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile and showed up in 5th and 4 ¼ lengths back at the wire. She made a slight closing effort after the third call and did put up another 93 speed rating that day. She will get the services of jockey, L Radzinski from Washington to come in to ride up top for this trip who is a familiar jockey to her as they paired together in Breeders Bowl. They will be going out on Saturday as the morning line favorite and will represent the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 7
Horse/Odds: My Zero Hops 7/1
Jockey: J Piotrowski
This Mineshaft Bay filly will head to the gate with jockey, J Piotrowski from Pennsylvania in the saddle to take this prior G3 winner in an attempt to pick up a G1 win. In her last trip to the track in Arizona on 11/09/2019 she ran in the G3, Mistaken Soda Identity Stakes at a distance of 8.5 furlongs where she kicked into high gear after the second call and started picking off horses. She found her way to the front shortly after the third call and went on to pick up her trophy and G3 badge in the winner’s circle that day and she won by a ¼ length at the wire with a 97 speed rating. She will be looking to bring that speed with her as she steps up in Class for this race with her familiar jockey that she has paired up with unsuccessfully in the past. She has four career starts and found the wire first in three of those outings. She will be headed to the gate at post time to seeking her fourth win.
Post Position: 8
Horse/Odds: Tempting Piranhas 9/1
Sire: Pioneerof The Nile
Jockey: W McClendon
This Brown filly out of the G1, 1M mare, Medakaza has eight career starts to her credit. She found the boards in seven of those trips and the only mishap was when she tried a run on the turf back in June of this year. Since that time she has taken some very aggressive jumps in speed with consistent improvement. She last ran on 10/27/2019 in a Listed Stakes, Gonna Get Bit going 8.5 furlongs here in California of which she has taken up residency for all her prior starts. Her owner has contracted with jockey, W McClendon from Vermont to take the trip with his horse on Saturday. He will need to insure his horse brings her 95 speed rating forward as she takes to the track and a big jump in Class trying to extend her Hot Streak after four straight wins. They will head to the gate representing the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 9
Horse/Odds: Skittlez 14/1
Jockey: N Bonus
This Roan filly will be headed out in the post parade sharing in as one of the longest choices in this field per the odds makers. But I can’t say that this filly does not stand a chance when looking at her record. She has seven career starts and has made it to the boards in five of those races. She did take a big stumble in her last outing on 11/02/2019 here in California in the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Filly when she failed to compete as the 16/1 choice in that field. She crossed the wire in 11th and was way back in that race. She is a GP badge earner and clipped the wire 2nd in the G1, Walnut Tree Stakes which was also here in California. She could be a surprise here if she can get her legs back for this race. She will have jockey, N Bonus from Illinois coming in to take the ride as they head to the gates come post time.
Post Position: 10
Horse/Odds: Pleasures Of War 8/1
Sire: War Front
Jockey: D Raymond
This Bay filly found little enjoyment in her last outing on 11/02/2019 in the G1, Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Filly here in California in her last outing. She crossed the wire in 7th and was over 6 lengths back when she crossed the wire. Prior to that race she was all business here in California on 09/22/2019 in the G1, Walnut Tree Stakes of which she made a nice closing run and hit the wire 1st by ¼ length to put that race in the win column. Jockey, D Raymond from New York gets the call again to ride up top with this big filly of which I have a slight concern. This jockey did not perform well with this horse in the Breeders’ Bowl in their pairing together and I would prefer to have seen a more seasoned jockey riding up top in this race with her when they head out to represent the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 11
Horse/Odds: Ruth’s Special One 12/1
Sire: Fed Biz
Jockey: J Pimental
This Bay filly has had a busy schedule in her 2 year old career with ten starts already under her belt. Her best speed rating came in her last trip to the track on 11/09/2019 in Arizona when she hit a 92 speed that day. But it was only good enough to come in 3rd in that race and she was 3 ¾ lengths back at the wire. Her G3 badge came back on 09/08/2019 in the G3, The Chicago-DC Lassie where she won on an off track. She will have jockey, J Pimental who is a local jockey here in California up top for this race. Another first time jockey draw of which I have concern that may not have the skills to keep this horse in a competitive position in this race. The jockey needs to keep this horse in a spot of which they can make a big closing run for the wire and find the holes needed to weave through traffic.
Post Position: 12
Horse/Odds: Moland 9/1
Sire: Uncle Mo
Jockey: C Ambrose
This Bay filly has the breeding sired by Uncle Mo and is out of HOF mare Land Slam who is a well decorated mare that has produced four Graded winners. The owner brings in his G3 badge earner into this field that is coming off a nice G3 win when she closed from 9th place at the third call to capture her a win in the G3, The Adam’s Apple in New York in her last outing on 11/03/2019 with a speed rating of 97. She had jockey, C Ambrose up top for that race and they will pair together here again in the Movieland Starlet after their last success pairing. A stiff whip will be needed to close in this race against this field, but if this jockey can get his horse to fire with the speed we know she has they could be very competitive in this race when they head out to the their gate on Saturday.
Post Position: 13
Horse/Odds: Based On Class 10/1
Jockey: E Seifert
This Bay filly has yet to be pushed off the boards in five career starts and has never finished worse than second in any of her races. She took a nice bump in speed in her last trip to the track which was in a Listed Stakes, Murf Ray Dirt Juvenile Fillies here in California on 10/27/2019. She came in to close up shop after the third call with a nice charge for the wire where she got up by 1 ¾ lengths against her closest adversary. She looks to find her third win in a row as she takes a big jump in Class and her jockey, E Seifert from Argentina that will need to help find her a clean trip. We have seen this horse run near or at the front in some prior races but she does very well closing late. This is a first time pairing with her jockey, but he is a seasoned veteran that knows how to handle a rising star. They will head out to the track for Saturday’s race representing the HorsePower residency.
Post Position: 14
Horse/Odds: Cadet’s Map 12/1
Sire: Liam’s Map
Jockey: T Stone
This Light Grey filly comes in with only two career starts to her credit and appears to be the least experienced filly in this field. However, I kind of feel this should not be looked at in a negative light as this seasoned owner knows what he is doing. She has not yet missed the boards in her two career starts and her owner has shown he is not afraid to run this filly against the boys as she did in her last trip to the track in the Listed Stakes, Blame Robby. She certainly stood her ground against the colts and came in 2nd in that race and was 1 ¾ lengths back at the wire. My biggest concern is not this horses lack of experience but that she drew the far outside gate that may not be to her liking due to her up front running style. Jockey, T Stone of which I nor this horse are familiar will need to be careful in not falling into the trap of wasting too much energy out of the gate when they go out to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Skippy's Watch List
Ruler Of Justice: Looks for redemption after a 5th place finish in her Breeders' Bowl outing.
Moland: I can't ignore this 97 speed in her last trip to the track and she pairs up again with a familiar jockey.
My Zero Hops: Looks prepared and is worth a post as a possible contender in this race
Tarton's Long Shot
A.P. Kingdom: This horse at 11/1 deserves a shot on your exotic tickets if she can handle the long trip to get here for this race. She could be a surprise in the making here and upset some other fillies in the field.
