Calculus Guru Dirt Filly Sprint
Stakes*CPU - Purse : $100,000
Restricted to 3 Year Olds, Fillies Only
6 Furlongs | ~1200 Meters | Three Quarters of a Mile Fast Dirt
It has been a while since I have previewed a Listed Stakes which I use to do almost exclusively. Seeing I had time today as I eat Thanksgiving leftovers I thought I would find a nice little Listed Stakes to write up in my spare afternoon. I found as I was looking around I found this Listed Stakes that will run on Saturday afternoon in Massachusetts for 3 year old fillies that will travel on a Fast Dirt track at a distance of 6 furlongs. At first glance this appears to be a well matched field of ten horses along which include some up and coming Allowance winners that are looking to add to their credentials. The morning line odds have been posted and the post positions have been drawn. Let’s take a preview of how these filly look as we preview the running of the starters in the Calculus Guru Dirt Filly Sprint.
Post Position: 1
Horse/Odds: Practical Dance 7/2
Sire: Scratch Bred: PRACTICAL JOKE x SILVER GHOST x NORTHERN DANCER
Jockey: S Meola
Coming out of the first gate will be our morning line favorite in this field of fillies. She is a nice looking Grey that is a prior stakes winner which came back in May of this year at a distance of 6 furlongs. She has attempted to expand her distance but jumping that 8 furlong hurdle has not been the kindest to her. So she backs down to 6 furlongs in this race of which she has had success in the past. Her last outing was on 10/27/2019 in Maryland going 8.5 furlongs in the Red String Dirt Filly Memorial. She found no pleasure in this race as she showed up back in 12th and over 11 lengths back when she crossed the wire. The distance here on Saturday should show her a lot more kindness as she heads out to the gates representing the East-West Connection residency.
Post Position: 2
Horse/Odds: Ready Plus One 4/1
Sire: Scratch Bred: MORE THAN READY x GONE WEST x SADLER'S WELLS
Jockey: G Tapia
This Bay filly has shown up the bridesmaid in her last two Listed Stakes outings. Her last trip to the track was on 10/05/2019 in the Senorita Holy Dirt Filly Sprint going a distance of 7.5 furlongs. She tried to make a late move and was caught at the wire by a deep closer who nudged her out by a neck. She finished with a 105 speed rating which may be good enough to keep her in contention for this race if she can bring that speed with her. She is listed in the morning line as the second choice in this field as she goes out to the track representing the Hoosier Racing residency.
Post Position: 3
Horse/Odds: The Bourbon Double 5/1
Sire: Scratch Bred: GUN RUNNER x DEPUTY MINISTER x FAPPIANO
Jockey: K Sanoy
This Bay filly is a prior Listed Stakes winner from when she went out on 09/22/2019 in Kansas going 6.5 furlongs in the Rolledup Dirt Filly Memorial. She took control after the 2nd Call and held off a deep closer in that race to make it to the wire 1st by neck. She then came back on 10/26/2019 in Argentina where she could not find her step and showed up in 4th at the wire when she went 7 furlongs in that race. She will need to show some improvement from that 97 speed rating in her last race and she could well do that as she has seen triple digit speed ratings a couple of time in some prior starts. She will be heading out for the call of the race representing the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 4
Horse/Odds: Fionia Barcelona 19/1
Sire: Pretty Wild Again
Jockey: J Farache
This Bay filly will get her first time start at the Listed Stakes level as she moves up in Class. The distance appears something in her wheelhouse that she should handle well. Her last outing came on 10/26/2019 in New York as she traveled a distance of 4.5 furlongs in a $48,700/NW3x Allowance race. She pulled in 2nd just a ¼ length back. This distance appeared too short for her and I feel this 6 furlong race may show an improved speed rating for her if she can handle the moving up in Class. She has a top speed rating of 96 which came back in July. She will need to find some fire in her legs and improve on that to remain competitive in this field. She will be representing the Universal Racing Club residency come post time.
Post Position: 5
Horse/Odds: Verduga Mundial 5/1
Jockey: G Garbaccio
This Roan filly has been on a rollout of wins and has a Hot Streak going. Her last outing came on 10/08/2019 in Maryland in the G3, The Kept Safely Stakes at a distance of 6 furlongs. She made a nice closing run down the stretch to capture a nice win in her first Graded level attempt. She put up a nice speed rating of 112 that day and has hit triple digits in her last three trips to the track. She is not the favorite in this race as she steps down in Class but she has proven she deserves respect of which the odds makers may have slightly over looked. If she can up her speed rating like she has been running in her recent races she should be a serious horse to watch in this race. She will be heading out to the gates representing the Hispano Parlante residency.
Post Position: 6
Horse/Odds: Crazyeyes Sanders 13/1
Sire: Cairo Prince
Jockey: K Allen
This Brown filly many have been pushing the envelope a little too hard in recent outings stepping up into G3 races she may not have been quite ready for. Then she stepped back down to the Listed Stakes level but tried a trip on the turf that was also not kind to her. She ran that race on 09/21/2019 at a distance of 6.5 furlongs on the turf in Ontario. She showed up a frightening 10th in that race and was 12 lengths back when she crossed the wire. She comes back to the dirt and is well rested for this race. I feel she will show much improvement here on Saturday, but may still need to dig deep to remain competitive in this field. She will be heading out at post time representing Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 7
Horse/Odds: Notnowman 17/1
Jockey: M Patrick
This Bay filly will get another shot on Saturday to attempt to put a new feather in her bonnet. She has had several stakes attempts in the past, but all have proven to be unfruitful for her. She has raced on turf and made a switch over to dirt back in July. She has not yet seen triple digit speed ratings in her fifteen start career. She last went out on 10/12/2019 traveling 5 furlongs in India where she placed 6th and was 3 ½ lengths back when she crossed the wire. She will need to show marked improvement as she makes her long trip from India to get her to Massachusetts. All though only a small ding in the sim they tend to hit a little harder on non-Graded winners. She will be heading out to the gates to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 8
Horse/Odds: Misty Empire 5/1
Sire: Classic Empire
Jockey: D Ezelle
This Brown filly picked up a Listed Stakes win back in July in the Shovelhead Dirt Filly Dash going 7 furlongs. In her last race which was on 10/18/2019 she went 5 furlongs in Michigan in a Listed Stakes, the Brickyard Thunder Stakes. She failed to hit those triple digit speed ratings and failed to hit the boards in that race with a 4th place finish as she crossed the wire 2 lengths back. She needs to bounce back in this race and find those triple digit numbers again against this field. If she can do that she will have a chance in this attempt in this 6 furlong try. She will be heading out on Saturday to represent the Universal Racing Club residency.
Post Position: 9
Horse/Odds: Shes A Lone Wolf 5/1
Sire: Not A Single Doubt
Jockey: W Miller
This Bay filly has been hitting the triple digits in her last two outings which I am sure her owner is glad to start seeing. But in her last trip to the track on 11/02/2019 in California going 6 furlongs in her first Listed Stakes attempt in the Torrid Block Stakes she faded back and hit the wire in 6th and was 2 lengths back when she crossed the wire. She did show up with a 103 speed that day none the less. She will get another shot here on Saturday to put a new trophy in the trophy case and badge on her résumé. She does have 13 career starts and has only missed the boards once and that came in her last trip to the track. She appears to have good potential and needs another good opportunity to prove herself. She may get that here on Saturday when she heads out representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 10
Jockey: D Tyrrell
This Chestnut filly will get her first opportunity to run in a Listed Stakes here in Massachusetts. She has shown to be competitive at the Allowance level in her seven career starts only missing the boards once when she tried to go 8.5 furlongs back in November of 2018. She has yet to hit the triple digit speed ratings, but heading into the end of the year may be a good time to give a good Allowance filly a nudge into a Listed Stakes opportunity to feel out how she may do before she turns four years old. I think this is a good time for this horse to do just that even though she gets no love from the odds makers as they make her the longest choice in this field. She last ran on 08/17/2019 in California going 7 furlongs in a $48,700/NW4x Allowance of which she showed up 3rd at the wire and was 3 ¼ lengths back. She gets her chance on Saturday to see if she can make the step forward at the Listed Stakes level when she heads to the track representing GR Simsters residency.
Skippy’s Watch List
Verduga Mundial: Comes in with three straight wins and snatched a G3 trophy in her last outing.
Ready Plus One: A bridgesmaid in her last two trips makes her hungry for a win
Practical Dance: I look for her to rebound after that last failed outing.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Shantie at 23/1 has done well in her Allowance career and comes in well rested running on a fairly light lifetime schedule. I will give her a chance to prove herself at these odds and see if she can upset some horses in this field when I place my exotic bets at the window.
