Francua Chronicles: I’m Long Overdue

Been a long while since I’ve done an update on my barns. As a quick overview, I’m still just shy of two years into the game which means I still have a ton to learn but overall the progress of my barn has been encouraging. This year I took the approach of investing in quite a few higher end sires and really focused on trying to breed “quality” lines in the hope that in years to come it will pay dividends. I should also mention I’m very susceptible to breeding sires I liked watching run  in real life but may not necessarily have been good buys when it comes to the game. Obviously I’m not going to review all 220 of my two-year olds but I’ll highlight a few in the three categories I’ve classified them: Horses I’ve Lost Hope On, Holding Out Hope, & Promising Future. It probably goes without saying but most of the ones I’ve lost hope on were the lines in which I didn’t use a high end sire. I also included an update to the progress of some of my three year olds which is basically the best of my first ever breeding class thus far.

Horses I’ve Lost Hope On:

BRASS TAP (KEEN ICE x PLEASANT TAP x CAPOTE) – Before you start in on me, yes I know this isn’t a “quality” line, but after seeing pmjstable’s  G2 winning SEATTLE ON ICE, and me being a sucker for anything that has CURLIN in it I was inspired to try my luck with KEEN ICE. I didn’t fare to well with my line as BRASS TAP hasn’t finished a race closer than 10 lengths back. Through her first 3 races her top speed fig of 57 came in a 6 furlong MC 100K event. Maybe she gets better with age, but I don’t really foresee her figuring things out enough to make an impact in the future.

SUPER D’ORO (COLLECTED x SUPER SAVER x MEDAGLIA D’ORO) – This girl crushed her debut with a 74 speed fig in the New Mexican slop earning a 74 speed fig. Unfortunately for me she hasn’t come close to running back to that form with her two most recent runs on a fast track resulting in a 51 and 50 speed fig losing by a combined 36 lengths. She hasn’t run since September, however I’m making a bold statement with her by running her in the Legend From Limit Dirt Sprint in a week. There is a 95% chance that she’ll see an off track. Whether she runs good or bad on the mud I’ve kind of already lost hope.

BUTTER MY BISCUIT (MIND YOUR BISCUITS x ALPHA x STORM CAT) – I know the sire is a fan favorite around these parts and this pairing is probably more of an indictment on me. To make matters worse I hemared DARK ALPHA STORM in order to do the breeding. Any way I try to spin this the results through three races just haven’t been encouraging to this point. This filly has managed a top speed fig of 55 and hasn’t been close to sniffing the money with her closest finish coming in an 8th place 9 length loss at the MC 75K level.

DATA DROP (DATA LINK x JOHANNESBURG x LEMON DROP KID) – Claimers is certainly in this filly’s future as she’s never been closer than 8 lengths and her best figure came in a 22 length loss which she earned a 60 speed fig.

OLLIE OXEN FREE (OXBOW x CITY ZIP x MARIA’S MON) – The idea here was to hopefully get a long sprinter and while I suppose there is still hope for that it won’t be happening at a super competitive level. This filly’s best finish came in a 15K MC in which she finished 7th by 8 lengths. Like the others she’s just been outmatched in every effort.

Holding Out Hope

ONE WARRIOR NATION (PIONEEROF THE NILE x TALE OF THE CAT x WILD AGAIN) – She debuted at 8 furlongs and ran last the majority of the race before passing a few tired rivals. Again the thought process here was to hopefully get an 8-10 furlong runner but I think I may have ruined my chances of getting that with WILD AGAIN as the DDS who’s a bit more sprinty on the mares side. In her second attempt I decided to cut the distance to 6 furlongs and she ran a much improved race and looks to have some closing ability as she went 10th to 4th. The speed fig came back as a 73 in that one and she’s scheduled to try 7 furlongs in her next so at the least maybe she develops the stamina to go long over time.

AMERICAN MADNESS (AMERICAN PHAROAH x KINGMAMBO x SECRETARIAT) – I’m probably one of the few that hasn’t had much luck with AP. I only have a couple out of him but they don’t seem to care for my training methods and this gal is no different thus far. She ran an encouraging 3rd place in her dirt debut at 7 furlongs sporting a 70 speed fig. Since she closed from 9th to 3rd I gave her more distance to run at which proved to be the wrong tactic as she’d finish 8th with a 69. Since dirt didn’t work out early on I figured I’d give 7 furlongs on the turf a go which showed some improvement to a 6th place finish and another 70 speed fig. Her next race I’ve continued to cut the distance this time bringing her back to dirt at 6 furlongs. If the speed fig goes up I’ll know I have a sprinter on my hands.

DANAZIGGIO (CARAVAGGIO x DANZIG x SHARPEN UP) – He didn’t care much for the turf in his debut recording a 61 speed fig. I switched him to dirt sprints his following 3 races and he has improved over his last each speed fig wise. I finally gave him a crack at dirt routes in his last out and he put up his best effort to date finishing 2nd with a 78 speed fig. I went into this breeding thinking I will likely get a sprinter but as it would turn out he seems to like 2 turns more so far.

GOLDEN TIMEPIECE (GOOD MAGIC x DYNAFORMER x STORM CAT) – Three 5th place finishes in as many tries two of which occurred in routes has me thinking she just doesn’t have enough distance to run at yet. She made a little move two back where she went from 6th to 5th between 3rd and 4th call earning a 68 speed fig. She’ll get one more crack at routing before her two year old season finishes up.

HULK’S ENFORCER (AWESOME AGAIN x A.P. INDY x PLEASANT COLONY) – Through her first three races she’s looked very sprinty trying to rush to the lead. Also worth mentioning that the shorter the distance the better she’s run both speed fig and position wise. Her most recent 6 furlong attempt saw her finish 4th with a 74 fig, I’ll keep cutting the distance in hopes that I can find some consistency out of her.

Promising Future:

GHOST OF THE STORM (GHOSTZAPPER X STORM CAT x MR PROSPECTOR) – This filly won at first asking and racked up an 80 speed fig at 7 furlongs on the dirt. Her next two saw her finish a respective 2nd and 3rd while recording 83 and 84 speed figs. Right now I’m thinking she wants two turns and that theory will be tested in her next out.

GHOST’S ENFORCER (GHOSTZAPPER x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x SUMMER SQUALL) – He is one of my ESR Fun City Challenge entries. He finished 3rd in the first round Group D race followed by winning his Group B losers bracket race which has sent him to the championship round in 5 weeks. The championship race is 5 weeks from now in which he’ll meet the best of the two year old ESR monsters.

STARKIST (SEA THE STARS x MONTJEU x KRIS S.) – In her first race as soon as the gate opened she looked special, crusing past her rivals for a victory. Her second out I tried stretching a bit in an allowance race and she just didn’t care for the added distance. Despite the 5th place finish, I had so much confidence in her from the maiden win that I brought her back to 6 furlongs and ran her in the Nightsong Turf Juvenile and watched her cruise to another victory along with an 80 speed fig. Riding high on that effort I shipped her to England for a try at the G1 Chevel and she didn’t disappoint there either. She’d close to a 2nd place finish getting beaten by half a length by valesa’s  MELANIE.

HEARTOF THE NILE (PIONEEROF THE NILE x HARD SPUN x HALO) – She pretty much dominated her first two races to the tune of owning the lead through all 8 calls. For the most part this season I tried to temper my expectations and not push the issue with any particular horse but with I couldn’t resist. After winning an allowance race in commanding fashion I sent her out in the G1 Frickazee and man did it blow up in my face. She got dominated in that race finishing dead last. I’m going back to a more tactical approach with her in her next race as I’ve cut the distance a bit dropping her into the 7.5 furlong Strolling for Gold Dirt Juvenile.

FIERCELY FROSTED (FROSTED x DYNAFORMER x SADLER’S WELLS) – Broke the maiden at 7 furlongs in his first try and ran a solid second place in his first effort against winners. He’d come back to run an impressive 91 speed fig in his wire to wire victory. He’s going to finish out his two year old campaign against some other stakes hopefuls in the 8.5 furlong Gulliver Dirt Juvenile.

Three Year Old Updates:

ADORIFY (LEMON DROP KID x DANEHILL DANCER x HALO) – She’s found her footing in the 9-11 furlong range with her key achievement coming in the form of a 3rd place finish in the Road Rubbing turf Filly Route. She’s currently sporting a record of 12-3-3-4 and my hope is that her upcoming 4 year old season will improve upon the three year old season.

BECAUSE REASONS (SPEIGHTSTOWN x UNBRIDLED x GREEN DESERT) – This guy went on a nice three race win streak which saw him break his maiden, win an allowance, and win a stakes in succession. I gave him a shot in the G3 Bluegrass Cup Sprint and he finished an admirable 4th by about two lengths. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find him another graded race at his preferred 6 furlong distance so I stuck him back in allowance and he crushed the competition once again. With only one graded race left at the 6 furlong distance in what’s likely to be a sloppy surface I’ll pass up on the opportunity and start him fresh when he turns 4 years old.

CAIRO ROAD (CAIRO PRINCE x QUALITY ROAD x DANEHILL DANCER) – He ran a great race in the Nightly Start Dirt Route but was just unable to catch castillo’s FAROAN LATINO. I raced him one more time in a lackluster allowance performance before giving him time off. He’s back in training and will be running his next race in 4-5 weeks. His record currently stands at 11-4-2-2.

ESPIRI (IRONICUS x CHARM SPIRIT (IRE) x EXCELLENT ART) – Out of oldmoonfarms74’s POLE OF THE DAY this son of IRONICUS went on to earn a victory by closing from 10 off the pace in the G3 Movie Cup. A month later I sent him to the G2 Upper California Derby at 9.5 furlongs in which he finished that race injured. After resting him for about 8 weeks he took out a field of allowance runners at 8.5 furlongs on the turf. I’d go on to try the 9 furlong G2 Cherry Limb Stakes but he didn’t have the same pop he showed previously finishing 7th by 9 lengths. He’s run 13 times thus far with a record of 13-6-0-0 and will finish out the year in the 9 furlong Director Turf Route.

KING DANSILI (DANSILI (GB) x KINGMAMBO x A.P. INDY) – She’s been a very good runner and earned her SW badge in the 7.5 furlong Chateau Event Turf Filly Dash. I didn’t come out of that race overly confident in her ability to compete at the graded level so I’ve kind of kept her in the listed ranks until she shows me otherwise. Since then she’s managed a 2nd place and 3rd place in her three other attempts in listed. She’ll get one more crack at listed in the Guided by Pollard Turf Filly Memorial to finish out her year. Given the backend of her pedigree I am also very tempted to try her on the dirt to see how she does. Her current record is 12-5-1-1.

MINION OF WAR (WAR FRONT x A.P. INDY x ALYDAR) – Out of the G3 winning mare ALYZIG, he’s kind of under-performed in my opinion.  I did find a home for him running on the turf and he did manage to earn his SP badge in the Galileo Seeking Turf Memorial but hasn’t taken that next stop llke I thought he would. His current record is 12-4-2-1.

MASTER OF WAR (MASTERCRAFTSMAN (IRE) x WAR CHANT x RIVERMAN) – I bred this gal as a two year old for the ESR Queen of the Turf challenge last year where he didn’t quite fit in with the routers. Once I flipped her to sprints things seemed to click and she’s earned himself the SP badge finishing 3rd in the Caveman Bones Turf Filly Sprint. She’s currently shut down for the rest of her three year old season. Current record is 12-4-4-1.

TURN EM’ LOOSE (CARAVAGGIO x WRITTEN TYCOON (AUS) x KINGMAMBO) – He popped my graded cherry as a two year old winning the 8 furlong Royal Dodge. His three year old campaign was rather up and down though as he got trounced in the G2 South African Classic, G2 St. James Tavern, and G3 Untouchable but managed to get 3rd place in the G3 Jellyton Stakes and win the G3 Danish 2000 Guineas. Given the inconsistency I decided to try him back at sprints and he won a 7 furlong allowance followed by a 3rd place finish in the 7.5 furlong G3 Smellington Guineas. He’s currently shut down for the year but will likely come back to continue running at the graded level. Current record is 13-5-0-3.
