THE REDBOARD ROOM – Recapping NY 4935

From the Horses Mouth

Allen Kane picks 4 winners on the card

5 other top picks in the money

10 winners picked overall

RACE 1

2ND – PERCUSSIVE(NY) – take your time getting to the track today as odds-on PERCUSSIVE lays over this field in a no value opener.

Odds-On favorite couldn’t hold the lead and had to settle for the place money, nothing ventured, nothing gained

RACE 2

OUT – SOVIET BALLET(IRE) – in hand beating this kind last out after finishing 3rd in a Stakes Race

OUT – POETRY MAN(PA) – PA bred faces older horses for the first time in open company but is a perfect 3-3 this distance and could click a big price

OUT – TRUST BUT VERIFY(ENG) – repeat of last could get in done in here

Off the board in this one as the winner FAST METEOR left no doubt who the best horse in this field was

RACE 3

3RD – HIGH PUBLICITY(JPN) – showed speed in last against better and may easily boss these around with normal progression, first time for a tag

1ST – PROWLIN MUSKET(FL) – turns back into a sprint and drops into claim first time, odds-on favorite could be suspect here

Top pick HIGH PUBLICITY had a clear lead to the lane and then gave way to the late runners.  Odds-on second pick swept past them all to take top honors.

RACE 4

OUT – DANCING EMPIRE(KY) – unlikely to survive the claim box here, the Empire Maker mare is in for a tag first time and is worth a look here at 16-1

OUT – PULLING TEETH(AUS) – one time Graded winner finds herself entered at her lowest level

1ST – GULLIBLE’S TRAVELS(KY) – logical favorite here but Even money on a horse that is 0-5 at six furlongs has me trying to beat her

Third choice GULLIBLE’S TRAVELS breaks her 0-5 six furlong jinx and wires a field of $40k claimers.  Top two choices were nowhere to be found

RACE 5

3RD – WHATCANBROWNDOFORU(KY) – hard to figure why this gal isn’t running at the stakes level, hard to look past off last three

OUT – GO DOWN SWINGING(KY) – took down stakes winners in last, could repeat

1ST – A FATHERS LOVE(KY) – could be looking at a very solid 4yo campaign and just might kick it off on Saturday

Bullfrog connections might have something here as third pick A FATHERS LOVE looked much the best rewarding her backers with a $9.60 payoff.  Exacta got spilt as SKY HOUSE photo’d WHATCANBROWNDOFORU for the place

RACE 6

OUT – OUTBACK ISIS(KY) – second all three starts and stretches out first time, Smart Strike filly is bred for bigger things

2ND – LEOPARD(KY) – from HOF mare QUEEN’S CATS, made a big jump first time turf last out, hails from smart barn

OUT – MAGENTA DOG(NZ) – you get 17-1 here for a filly that debuted at 9f furlongs on the turf and finished 3rd, worth a wager

Tough day getting worse as only second pick LEOPARD could hit the board for a $7.50 Place payout.  Time to hit the bar.

RACE 7

OUT – GLAD NOTE(ITY) – closer returns to a sprint in a race loaded with speed

OUT – AUTOBAHNS(KY) – returns to a sprint and should benefit from a pair of quick run miles

OUT– DISTORTED REVENGE(KY) – well-bred filly won going away last out when shortened up in a sprint

Ever have one of those days when you should have never gotten out of bed.  This was one of those days.  Top three picks were far back and never got involved.

RACE 8

OUT – SUPERFANTASTIC(KY) – fields top bred horse returns to dirt sprint where she impressed in second start

2ND – SWORD’S SAINT(NY) – toss out last two as filly returns to the track where she broke her maiden in impressive style

1ST– HEY KOOLAID(AR) – AZ bred has turned in consistent speed figures but is winless in 4 sprinting

Second and third make up the exacta that paid $22.20.  Top pick SUPERFANTASTIC and LUCKYTHUNDER battled each other into submission as neither hit the board.

RACE 9

1ST – BUSH CABIN(KY) – Medaglia D’Oro filly makes long overdue route debut in a spectator only race

OK so BUSH CABIN only paid $2.70, but at least we have a winning ticket.  Maybe we can salvage the rest of the day.

RACE 10

1ST– AWESOMELYELUSIVE(KY) – impressive debut two -turns might lead these every step

2ND– PHOSPHENE(IRE) – on the board every start but can’t afford to get too far behind top choice or may find herself just short once again

How the winner can pay $3.70 and the exacta come back $2.60 is beyond anything I could explain.  Two in a row and maybe it’s time to cut my losses.

RACE 11

2ND – SKETCH(KY) – after 10 tries, Dunkirk colt drops in for a tag first time and should be able to graduate against these

3RD – INTENSE TRIP(IRE) – put in best effort in last and gives two turns another go, this time on the dirt

1ST– GWOEMUL(KY) – hasn’t been close since debut, moves up this level

Tri-Box nets $81.20 as GWOEMUL took over in the stretch besting top two choices.

RACE 12

1ST– LPGA CAUSE(KY) – freshened after winning three in a row around two-turns, best if fit

3RD – BOB’S SISTER(IRE) – impressive Danehill Dancer filly is a winner of three of four and makes two turn debut

Top pick LPGA CAUSE proved much the best wiring a short field paying $5.70 for the win

RACE 13

OUT – WILDCATS PLAYMATE(KY) – easy to overlook this hard hitting filly in a field of talented well-bred newcomers but 7-1 for a filly with a competitive edge is hard to pass up

3RD – FREE BOWL OF SOUP(KY) – is what I might need if I can’t cash a ticket this race. Impressed in debut and can only benefit from that race

OUT– SPECTACULAR AGAIN(KY) – first time starter by Awesome Again from mare that has produced one stakes winning and two stakes place offspring

Second choice FREE BOWL OF SOUP managed a 3rd, and by the end of this day that’s what I’m going to need, a free bowl of soup.

RACE 14

3RD – MINISTER OF SKUNK(KY) – comes out of key race where she just missed against the likes of Graded winner DAY OF PROSPERITY. Meets no such runners here. Days Best

OUT – HYPERVIGILANT(KY) – looked comfortable in first start against winners from multi-stakes winning mare. Gets the services of NY top jock Lawton

OUT– MALICIOUSLY(KY) – raced favorably last out when made her two turn debut in a stakes and should find conditions more to her liking this time around

Days’ best bet finishes third after giving way in deep stretch.

RACE 15

1ST – KITTY WELLS(KY) – Allowance Company should be a welcome sight for this filly after four straight graded appearances

2ND – BLAZING D’ORO(KY) – eleven of twelve career ITM and comes off a third place finish in a stakes last out

3RD – SELASPHOROS(KY) – good record against short fields so right at home here

Even when you win you lose…KITTY WELLS toys with a field of allowance runners winning in hand as the cold triple pays $29.80 and I’m not breaking even on this day.

RACE 16

OUT – SHI NO NUMA(KY) – dangerous stretch runner makes two turn debut and has pedigree to back him up

1ST – TIMES NEW ROMAN(KY) – Dynaformer colt returns to the turf and could fly past the leaders with a big stretch drive

OUT– KAT CRY(KY) – won’t be hard spotting this one out of the gate, the question is whether he’s going to

Second choice TIMES NEW ROMAN rallied from the back of the pack to sweep past the field and pay his backers $12.00 for the win.  Top pick SHI NO NUMA, never menaced.
