Song Of Indy Takes Corkscrew Stakes
Undefeated 3yo potential superstar SONG OF INDY showed that he doesn’t need the early lead to win a big race while punching his own ticket to Louisville for the Bluegrass Derby.
In Saturday’s Grade 1 Corkscrew Stakes, the grey colt by Unbridled’s Song took back slightly and settled in fourth while UNION BUSTER banged heads with WITH MALICE and PLAYING FOR TIPS for the early lead. As the horses came around the far turn, SONG OF INDY slipped forward on the rail and got the lead while UNION BUSTER and WITH MALICE succombed to the pressure. PLAYING FOR TIPS held on well, only giving way slightly, but DJ’S GOLDEN RIVER mounted a charge from mid-pack and began a rush toward the wire.
However, that late charge could not get to the winner, SONG OF INDY. That one held on comfortably to win by ¾ length, stopping the clock at a nifty 1:48.3.
Speculation is that DJ’S GOLDEN RIVER, who has now been 2nd in four consecutive stakes races, will also likely make the trip to Louisville to try ’em again.
Now 7-for-7, the ebucher07-trained SONG OF INDY will likely be the favorite come the first Saturday in May in Louisville. He hopes to join these Sim legends who took a Corkscrew win on to Derby success: Buda With The Slew, 2001; Tuff Enuff, 2004; Anticosti, 2005; Virtuoso, 2006, and Ataun, 2007.
