I love it when work brings me to the sunshine, and that is what has happened this week, as I travel to sunny Florida to cover the Grade II “The Miss Bonnie”.   While our field of fourteen pretty ladies will sure to be fighting for the title, MISS BONNIE 2011, there can’t help but to be some looking forward at the looming Bluegrass Oaks.  A solid finish this week and the first Saturday in May could be the next stop for a couple of these lucky ladies.  Let’s take a look at this fine group of feminine speed demons and see if we can (or can’t) pick a winner.

Gate #1:          Sandinmystilettos(KY)-        by mtkgrs-       Ridden by M. Anderson-         15/1

                        Hard Spun x Empire Maker x Kingmambo                            4: 2-2-0 ($51,485)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    312

Here we have an exciting up and coming mare who is making a big jump from allowance runs straight to graded company.  She has stretched well and as distance has been added, so has her speed.  Last time out she posted a 92sp @ 8.5 furlongs in a NW2L allowance run.  Easily could be a factor if she can handle the step up in class.

Gate #2:          Rockchucker(KY)-                by italst6-         Ridden by L.Buchta-               9/1

                        A.P. Indy x Tabasco Cat x Mr. Prospector                            8: 4-0-1 ($417,180)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    8

Her original trainer saw her as a sprinter – and ran her as such, never exceeding 7 furlongs in four races, and never exceeding a 70 speed figure.  Claimed for the whopping tag of $2500, current trainer italst6 immediately entered her into the GIII Dr. Shut-Yer-Lips Juvenile.  Insanity you may say, but the increased distance was what she craved, and she won easily over 7.5 furlongs. Followed directly up with a win in the GI The Darley at 8.5 furlongs with a career best 92 speed figure, Rockchucker was showing that she just needed some distance to show her class.  Two straight losses in G1’s, and Rockchucker was brought back to earth a bit before going on layoff.  Coming back this week after 2 ½ months , she will be looking to solidify her right to run in the Oaks.

Gate #3:          Krypton’s Angel(KY)-           by mucha-       Ridden by O.Barrett-              6/1

                        Elusive Quality x Seattle Slew x Storm Cat                           8: 4-3-0 ($208,765)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:  26

Here we have a graded place mare, with a listed stakes win to her name.  A lot of class here, and has proven 9 furlongs is a non-issue.  With her racing career starting almost a year ago, she broke her maiden her second trip out.  She followed that up with two straight allowance wins, and ever since it’s been a steady diet of graded and listed stakes. Watch for her to run way off the pace and come charging hard down the stretch.  A good bet to finish in the money and work to solidify a spot in the Oaks.

Gate #4:          Cause To Applause(KY)-     by redhill1-      Ridden by A.McKellar-           13/1

                        Giant’s Causeway x Kingmambo x Northern Dancer                        7: 3-2-0 ($89,545)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    313

Trainer redhill has decided it’s time to really applaud his young mare.  She has show the desire to stretch and win at the allowance level.  This Saturday getting her first taste of stakes racing, and facing a strong field.  Last time out she showcased her deep closing ability winning at 9.5 furlongs at a speed figure of 89.  The distance is right, but she will need to find more speed to win this week.

Gate #5:          Glass Spirit(IRE)-                  by tatty2-         Ridden by A.Darling-              12/1

                        Invincible Spirit(IRE) x Forty Niner x Caerleon                      6: 3-1-0 ($219,815)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    18

This mare has had an interesting career to date.  She broke her maiden her second run out at 6.5 furlongs, and then had a win in an allowance to follow that up.  Her trainer tatty2 then entered her into two straight GI’s, in which she finished fourth and second respectively.  The second place finish was in the G1-The Movieland Starlet, in which she ran much better than Rockchucker, and finished one spot ahead of Lindy Hop.  Last time out Glass Spirit was run in an allowance at 8.5 furlongs, and won easily against a short field.  Another one of our entries that is looking to solidify her spot in the Oaks.

Gate #6:          You Me And Them(WA)-      by teejay01-    Ridden by W.Case-                11/1

                        You and I x Green Tune x Song of Tara (IRE)                      9: 5-2-1 ($150,545)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    115

While this mare may not be dripping with blueblood, it definitely has shown she loves to win.  Five career races in allowance runs, and listed stakes races has proven that.  Most recently in the Liken it Local 3 year old Filly dirt, she blazed from 11 ¼ lengths back to win at 8.5 furlongs at a speed of 94.  She has run and won at a distance of 9 furlongs in the past, so distance is not an issue.

Gate #8:          Lindy Hop(KY)-                     by super13-     Ridden by V.Gardner-                        6/1

                        Awesome Again x Street Cry x NijinskyII                              9: 3-2-1 ($1,370,875)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    1

She is so young, and she is so rich.  The reigning Breeders Bowl Juvenile Filly champion & 2 year old dirt filly eclipse winner  looks as though she already has an Oaks entry locked up if she wants it.  For now though she is a serious contender for the title of Miss Bonnie 2011.    Seven of nine career races in listed or graded stakes, Lindy Hop enters with a lot of experience in these types of races.  Last time out she finished fourth in the G3-The SilverBulletBeer, run at a distance of 8.5 furlongs and at a speed of 92.  Looking to get back on track after failing to finish on the board the last two times out, I am sure trainer super13 would like a little momentum heading into the Oaks.

Gate #9:          Shoto(KY)-                             by lopickles-    Ridden by R.Maire-                9/1

                        Empire Maker x A.P. Indy x Deputy Minister                                    6: 3-2-1 ($80,525)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    92

Shoto ran third the last time out in the G3-The SilverBulletBeer in which she finished ahead of Lindy Hop.  While that is the only stakes experience in her short career, she can boast of never having finished out of the money.  She ran her best time in the SilverBulletBeer at a 94, the first time exceeding the 90 barrier.  She has the breeding, and growth.  Another good progression and Shoto is a real player in taking down this race.

Gate #10:        Sin N’ Grin(JPN)-                  by fatattack-    Ridden by A.Blackmore-        10/1

                        Deep Impact x A.P. Indy x Sadler’s Wells                             7: 4-2-1 ($110,000)

                        Dirt Route Rankings:  204

Sin N’ Grin started off her career running exclusively on the turf, and doing so well.  She posted a turf record of 5: 2-2-1 including a second place finish in the St-The QUARENTINE at 8 furlongs.  Trainer fatattack decided that once 2010 ended he would make a switch to dirt, and it has paid off so far.  In two allowance races this year Sin N’ Grin has won both against short fields, by a combined 8 lengths.  Huge step up in class on the dirt, but she is another that always hits the board going seven for seven.  Will be interested to see how she handles the challenge.

Gate #11:        Distorted Terror(KY)-           by bandinni-    Ridden by T.Bellows-              12/1

                        Distorted Humor x Dynaformer x Seeking the Gold              9: 4-1-2 ($271,939)

                        Dirt Route Rankings:  127

Distorted Terror has performed brilliantly in every race she has run except two.  Those would be her two attempts in graded races, both being GI’s, and losing each by an average of 11 lengths.  With a pedigree that this writer would die to obtain (literally I will BUY her) – she has yet to show the class needed to win a big race.  This will be a major test for her, and we will see if the saying “third time’s the charm” has any merit.

Gate #12:        Stormy Shame(KY)-             by twister-       Ridden by C.Faucher-                        14/1

                        Stormy Atlantic x Tiznow x Crafty Prospector                       8: 3-0-2 ($52,860)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    268

While it took this young mare a bit to figure out how to win, taking five tries to break her maiden, she has won two of three since.  Her lone loss came in a restricted listed stakes run at 8.5 furlongs, and then she won back to back allowance runs at 9 furlongs.  Her history suggests it might take some time to figure out how to run at the next level, but look out if she does.

Gate#13:         Belong to La(KY)-                 by jimch8-       Ridden by S.Popo-                 13/1

                        Belong To Me x Seattle Slew x Secretariat                           13: 5-2-3 ($96,660)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    185

With thirteen races run, Belong to La has had a busy last year.  After breaking her maiden her first time out, it took another six races finish first.  While spending most of her career as a sprinter, she has shown liking to the longer distances.  Last time out she crushed a short field in an allowance run at 8.5 furlongs, winning with a speed of 94 and by 2 ½ lengths.  Distance is fine, but will having run hard over the last year have an effect on a young filly?

Gate #14:        Celestial Peace(KY)-             by cyberex-     Ridden by J.Grubb-                8/1

                        Admire Moon x Storm Cat x Rahy                                         10: 7-1-0 ($222,978)

                        Dirt Route Ranking:    27

Celestial Peace enters the race with the most wins of any in the field with seven.  At one point in her career winning four straight, including back to back listed stakes runs.  For a horse that posted a sprint record of 7: 5-1-0 it would be easy to imagine it being a sprint champion contender.  However once the distance was stretched, her speeds starting coming.  In her first two tries at or over a mile she posted two wins, including a win in the 8.5 furlong St-The FIFTY PLUS ONE Challenge at a speed of 96.  Last time out ceberex tried his filly in her first graded attempt in the G1-Vermont Is 4 Lovers.  It was not one of her best runs and she finished a disappointing 6th.  She will need to rebound big if she is to hope to overcome this field and lock up an Oaks entry.

This very well could be the hardest race I have had to try and handicap yet.  It could be a bit confusing early, because the field is loaded with off the pace runners, but that final stretch could be one for the ages.  Being as I am out of whiskey, I have no Magic Whiskey Bottle in which to gaze into to find my picks.  Alas that also means this will be my first try at handicapping sober.  YIKES (not that I have had all that much luck drunk).

So without further ado …..

I am looking at putting down a 200 Trifecta Box on:

1)    Shoto

2)    Rockchucker

3)    Glass Spirit

Good luck to all these pretty ladies, may everyone come out of the gate clean, and everyone finish the race healthy.
