Several Runners might Pass Penn Test with A+
Well Ladies & Gentlemen we hope you are getting ready for this magnificent event where 12 very tough Mares are go into battle to take home the lovely hardware fill up to the rim with a $600,000 dollars in cash (checks were not accepted). Last year this prestigious event was convincingly won by Given’s spoiled mare: Bed in Flames (English equivalent name of Flammen Sehen) By the way, nowadays this German descendant of great sire Monsun is recuperating from a nasty injury occurred in her last race.
Without further ado let’s go and meet the runners:
1 178583 KHARTOUM KILLER(IRE) pincay H Harzheim 5/1
The name of this mare seems inspired after Evil Empire’s float of Kharthoum horses whose sire was Sadler’s Wells. She is the first entry of the very popular trainer and Christie’s VIP customer Pincay. This Sadler’s Wells daughter grade 1 winner and multiple grade 1 placed, in her LTO raced against pretty tough company the best males in the Sim finishing 10th at this distance. Don’t let this last race fool you her jockey eased up entering in the final stretch. Before this race, she had run in the Breeder’s Bowl F&M turf in 11 F and according to inside information (my son Jock K. Ledwith had a “slipping saddle”, but knowing the jock well, probably he had “too much drinking ‘n riding saddle”). Her race before the Breeder’s Bowl was on an off track which she did not handle at all. I know, I know I could find excuse after excuse and the fact remains that this tough mare is winningless in her last 11 races but no one can deny she’s always close. If she does not run well this time we know Pincay will book her a top Sim Sire for next year. Efficient and mafioso H. Harzheim will be in the stirrups.
2 4516 BARBARA STANWYCK(KY) palatine3 O A Haack 10/1
I will take a wild guess here and I will say that this lightly race 3 YO filly is named after the lead actress of “The Big Valley” T.V. series back in the 60’s and multiple Emmy Award winner the Brooklyn born Ruby Stevens. I wonder if Palatine, regular Comedy Central supporter, was remembering his favorite teenager love when he named this pretty filly. This North Light daughter will be running her 10th race, by the way just in her debut she ran less than 2000 meters. In her LTO this scratched bred broke the 100’s SP barrier coming in 2nd place in the G1 The Vicky Oaks (2600 meters). This is the first time she will be facing mares what I think is not a problem but I do not think she has developed all her racing potential yet and she has to confront again a top contender Mardi Grass Queen, who defeated her for almost 14 lengths 2 races ago in the Corn Shucker although in 2000 meters and not in today’s 2400 meters distance. Palatine hired the services of my Godson O A Haack who is a very talented rider (out of NF track) but like his very good friend K Ledwith likes to hit the bottle and play with the wages. As an inside note, I would like to say that in our family we know them as “los Pequeños Hamponcillos” (the little Crooks). Anyway, this filly might repeat her last race easily and she has shown already that’s the 1 ½ mile distance is not a problem for her.
3 52666 MARDI GRAS QUEEN(IRE) super21 J Piotrowski 5/1
According to our sources, one of Dell Penn favorite sons Whirlwind will be putting the saddle up on this filly due to his other “Super” associates (Topicount & AFC) will be saddling up their own horses in this race. The name of this well experienced 3 YO filly brings sweet memories to this guest reporter, it reminds me on my crazy times in Rio de Janeiro during the Carnivals (or Mardi Grass’ week here in U.S.) back in the 80’s. Her name seems linked to her he-mare Momma (Good to be King). This millionaire daughter of Dylan Thomas seems to be ready to take some hardware home after coming in 2nd place in a minor stakes at the 2600 meters distance. We know very well this filly who 3 races ago beat my filly K’s Infidel in a come from behind close finish in the G2 Corn Shucker; until now she seems to prefer the 2000 meters where she has posted 105’s + SP several times. Will she be able to get the 2400 meters? Recent facts answer this question with a simply yes after posting a 101 SP in her prep race 21 days ago at 13F. She looks sharp and the “Super Cosa Nostra team” signed the services of Good Ol’ Piotrowsky who was riding at this track when my great grandfather was a kid. In a nutshell: very well connected filly whose powerful owners are well known Capos so and in my best Corleone I have to say “don’t ever take sides against the Family”.
4 26147 LADY TERPS(NY) silverbull J Caves 37/1
Well the seasoned trainer Silverbull decided to entry this veteran on the premise that “races are races and the only way not win them is by no entering your horse”. This veteran mare, very soon to be 7 YO, before her last race at 3200 meter (2 miles) had put together 3 easy wins at this distance and 2600 meters too, but she has never hit the 100 SP barrier. This Azeri’s sister (she is by Jade Hunter) although is stepping up in class counts with one of my favorites jocks on the saddle Mr. Caves that is coming all the way from EK, lol. Many people might look at the PP’s and say she looks like her name “ como una tortuguita” (like a terrapin) in this race but we all remember how the fable “The Hare and the Tortoise” ends. Anything possible when you have hope, faith and a good bottle of blended Scotch (well and single malt too). So despite the morning line I think she, with a lot of faith and blended scotch in her, might win this race.
5 11751 DUBAI DESERT STAR(KY) qwikvett1 S L Ledwith 11/1
Second entry in this race for Mr. One Dollar Bills (Pincay) and he still has one more left and also second daughter of North Light in the race (out of 3)… what a coincidence! This 3 YO filly bought 19 races ago from Winnett has only won 2 times but again do not let this fool you, she has been running consistently ITM and has placed in minor stakes and has a 3rd place in the G2 George Burns Gracie Allen Invitational at today’s distance with a very nice 104 SP. Rumor has it that she works with Khartoum Killer and she “has killed” Khartoum several times but with Pincay and his free passes to Christies “for the clockers” we will never know the truth. LTO she won easily a 2L allowance race (1 ½ mile) by 4 ½ lengths with a 101 SP# and under the wraps what has given his connections the possibility of signing up my Old man a dedicated horseman: S.L. Ledwith. This will be her first “official” time running against mares on her 21st race.
6 178527 MARIA DU BARRY(KY) hollandia8 T Kelly 16/1
I wonder the origin of her name, was she named to honor Madame Du Barry or was she named to honor one of the good friends of Adult entertainment European Mogul Yochem? Or maybe Yochem was honoring an American artist who portrait animals in her many paints during the past century. Well in any case this 3 YO filly will be running for 19th time in a successful campaign with already 7 wins. She is a half sister of graded winner (Westegen) and a stakes winner (Scary Bit) both already retired and in Netherlands’ glue factory. She represents the third daughter of Derby Epsom winner (’04) North Light running in this race. It is known in the racing world that Yochem loves North Light (by the way this sired recently moved to Canada) and took her mare Marie Du Barry to him looking for a horse that could run 10 miles on daily basis with a sulky strapped on her. This filly came 4th in her LTO, where she came from the clouds (17 lengths behind) to finish 4/5ths of a second behind the winner. Previously, the Flying Dutch’s filly had put together 4 wins a row between 24000 and 2600 meters. This is what we know: we know that Yochem signed up jockey apprentice T Kelly, we know that traditionally those orange and blue silks love to come from behind and pick up horse by horse in an intimidating way, we know that Yochem is a Genius Statistician and old sim trainer who knows how to spot his horses and on top of all we know this: Yoss’ owner and one of the Super Cosa Nostra family have a shady stats connection, thus do not be surprised when you just see half of the total cash for 1st place inside the hardware when taking the picture in the winner’s circle.
7 185622 IRISH SUN(GER) cthstable F Gossett 7/1
Already a graded winner in her LTO this Irish Sun filly has put together 5 wins a row. This Monsun’s daughter is Flamed Semen’s sister (that’s the way it sounds when I try to pronounce in English the German name Flammen Sehen with my thick Tony Montana’s English accent), well do you remember her? She was last year’s winner of this race. According to her European trainer/owner has come to this race to take home some money and he had asked, previously, entering her in the race as a condition to be paid directly in Euros and did not want neither Benjamin’s nor Washington’s bills. This confident petition is thanks to have already defeated older mares in her last 2 efforts with a top SP# of 108 in 2200 meters. I wonder if the quarantine time does not diminish her natural speed and does not affect her stamina. By the way, as I understand it no Licensed Vets are allowed to give her any Sim Furosemide unless of course they want to end Nicky Santoro’s style. According to her PP’s it seems she will be the speed in the race and top echelon jock Gossett will be up and all of us know this experience jockey knows when to pull the trigger, but don’t be surprised if she does not go for the lead right away and ends coming off the pace and winning the race.
8 159424 VEGAS FREAK(KY) lenny11 D Givins 5/1
Talkin’ about Nicky Santoro, next we have Vegas Freak, an Empire Maker’s mare who seems to honor my Nickname in Sim City. According to one of “my guys” there is very heavy betting going on the side of these Del Penn Races. Yes, there is a tote board for the commoners like me, like us… but it seems a cadre of legal help has been preparing a bunch of properties documents. It seems Laura Topicount’s law firm has been working extra hours to complete the paperwork before Christmas Day, according to my source, the Evil Empire CFO and some of the Super Cosa Nostra Members are talking even “lucky magical underpants” and “Bakugans Cards”. So if this mare wins over the Super or vice versa, it will very interesting to know what went down. The PP’s indicate that this mare has won 3 times in this distance (out of 7 times) although has been 18 months since she won the G1 Adelaide Oaks and last year in this same race, she did not do well coming in 7th place. In her LTO she came 3 ¼ lengths behind Botjeu Theli also running in this race. The upside for her in this race is that Lenny hired the services D Givins who has run almost 9000 races with a lot of success and do not forget that she will be have an extra 200 meters of lawn property. This out-crossed mare have been running consistently in the 100’s + SP# aside for 1 race on yielding turf, including a win in the listed stakes Brisbane Distaff where she put 105 SP# and won by almost 4 lengths.
9 102690 BOTJEU THELI(IRE) tilbs2 R Whisper 8/1
Now we have a former $2,000 claimer… yes a $2,000 bargain!! This mare has come long way since she was claimed by this Aussie trainer. Who would have thought that an almost 4 YO filly running in the lows 80 SP# would have been able to hit 107 SP# 13 months later, talking about being patient with late bloomers… She has the speed to contend with Irish Sun for the lead, it seems to me she needs to be head to head in an easy pace otherwise she is done after the first half of the race. This desert King’s mare has been improving race after race. Her only try at this graded level was 3 races ago where my 8 YO Mare K’s Kachet got almost a career ending injury; in this race Botjeu Theli was not able to put her head in front and the 2800 meters distance was too much to ask, despite that she came 9 lengths behind the winner. In her LTO this former claimer was able to run in 2:15 3/5 to register a 107 SP#. Here, she reunites with her former jockey in E2 and the pride of EAAA: R Whisper!
10 178988 MAXIMUM IMPACT(KY) korn B Wu 44/1
I guess Mr. Dollars Bills is paying a bet here or promise one of my good friends at Christie’s (and by the way we are not talking Christie’s auction company) she will saddle up in a graded race in a prestigious event but you have to wonder what was Pincay thinking when he filled out the entry card of this Mineshaft’s filly. I mean if you see her PP’s they are nice: never beyond 4th place, always has never run less the 2200 meters and score a 99 SP# in that race, etc. In my mind, there is no doubt that the cold weather in AZ (a couple of weeks ago) must have affected Pincay’s circadian rhythms making him point this promising yet inexperienced filly to this tough race. Yes, we know there is an old school of thinking that says that good horses overcome any obstacles and they learn how to run in tough races but I will bet my good partner in crime (we meet at Christie’s on weekly basis) a STS son saying that Maximum Impact here in this race will be minimum and she will not win. See my readers? Not just big guns can bet aside the tote board. No doubt about it that a very well accomplished trainer will get the services of B Wu top jockey at E3 although one of the Ledwith’s clan is ready to take over that track very, very soon. By the way, J Ledwith calls him “El Manganzon Wu”
11 2270 FLAMBARDS(AUS) chop A Rolling 5/1
Knowing a little bit about Topicount we know that this Elvstroem’s daughter name had to be inspired on “Flambards” a K.M. Peyton’s Novel that later on was made into a T.V. Series. I don’t know, maybe Topicount is like Christine and she lived at Flambards and when she was 21 years old she inherited an obscene amount of money and went to Phoenix, AZ and built Christie’s and make Phoenix a livable place… oops hold on, I think I am blending stuff here, sorry guys… maybe Topicount met longtime ago with her “William” and then developed the love for the horses and became one of the top trainers in Sim Land and now she is honoring the love of her life “William” . The fact remains that this 4 YO mare (also ran last year in this race coming in 4th place) seems to have a good chance again. Last year she had won the G1 Vicky Oaks before this race, this year she is coming from a 3rd place in an allowance race, but do not try to underestimate her because she was beaten by 2 good mares (a GW and a SW). Topicount, the best part of the evil Super Cosa Nostra family, knows this track from A to Z and no one in here will dare to cross her. She hired A Rolling as Flambards’ jock that probably is the oldest Sim jock alive, but not as old as Kingab and Nextbonus (these 2 guys are just running very close in age behind Methuselah).
12 95741 DOME ISLAND(KY) afc2 P Harzheim 6/1
And lastly in this line up of mares, as it had to be, we have here Ghostzapper’s progeny and “la consentida del Padrino” (the darling of the Godfather). Dome Island is trained/owned by AFC, Capo di tutti Capi. As most of us know this whole Del Penn Guacamole thing happens thanks to the full support of AFC, many think this is a way this “Don” would like to say “thank you” to Mike for this hobby and give back to the Sim Community. Some others think this is a well oil scheme of laundering money. Personally, I think that AFC has found away to put all his “Sim Expenses” as tax deductible, probably some sort of needed anti-stress activities between surgical procedures. I am going to take another wild guess here and I will say that the name of this mare is coming from the highest island in the Lake George in Upstate NY, place where many of the people who dared to cross this “Capo di tutti Capi” have been buried ( I know that the height of that island have been growing year after year after year). We can see in her PP’s that this is a very consistent runner, she has been ITM all but 3 times on turf (twice in 4th place and just once a 6th place in a 14F race). On her last 3 races she averages 102+ SP# and 3 races ago she “blacktyped” herself winning by 3 ½ lengths in a minor stakes race. The mare despite running on her 24th race still seems she has not run fully to her potential and 105+ SP#’s are expected from here on. Add to all this, the mount and services of P Harzheim a top notch jock (and also a very well protected & favorite rider from the European mafias).
A couple of notes here: first I will like to point out that in this race there are 6 runners with Danehill as Sire of Sires= 3 North Lights, 1 Elvstroem, 1 Dylan Thomas and 1 Desert King. And second I would like to say this has to be a fun race to bet, but not for me, the only time I win at the track is when I do not bet.
Well Amigos, these have been all the fillies and mares running in this Second Running of “Del Penn Test”. I hope you were able to understand my points that in the event I tried to make one, you know with my gibberish English and my ADH Disorder, it is very difficult to make one. I hope you enjoy the races by drinking and relaxing with one my favorite scotch: “Read Seal”, huh what else is better in life?
