Dwarf Field in Medium Race in Tassie

An extremely small race here – well the race itself is big but there are only 5 runners so overall the race is actually medium sized I suppose if you balance the greatness of the race with the number of runners. I will start again.  An extremely medium race here with 5 runners who are battling to take out the MaryLand Special Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs for a purse of $45,000.  Battling being the operative word because with only 5 runners its not gunna be like a massive battle really is it? Unless of course its close between 2 or 3 of the runners and then there may be a little mini battle within this overall medium race. The track has been rated as good by our excellent stewards – the rating being a cross between fast and slow.  So this really is a medium race as even the track has been rated as medium.  or good. See if you can pick a winner below – you have a 1 out of 5 shot.

1 HYPER CHASSIS(KY)  meucci  A Tazdevil  2/1

5yo out of Hennessy has been performing well over the 8 furlong range probably wanting a tad more distance than those 8 furlongs as has been crying out for more with each run.  Does have a good record on an off track but hasn’t raced on that type of track for ages.  Which begs the question if this horse is so good over 8 furlongs and more – why the hell has he been entered here over only 6 1/2 furlongs.  Trainer knows something I don’t.  OR I know something the trainer doesn’t.  Which is THIS HORSE WANTS MORE DISTANCE!! Chance maybe…

2 MAXIMUS PRIME(KY)  ks00003  Do Tyrrell  3/1

Last race was a G3 race on turf and raced well really over 6 furlongs probably wanting a bit more distance but closed exceptionally well in the final run to the line.  All of his recent races have been on turf which is an excellent preparation for this run now on an off track on dirt.  Go figure.  Has raced on dirt before but not since September 2008.  Long long time ago.  Another trainer who has decided to give the turf a flick and the dirt a go.  What better than this race?  Possible chance but a massive gamble if you are punting on this one.  Heads or tails?

3 GREEN THUMB(GER)  caerleon  J Harzheim  7/2

Being an avid gardener myself, the name of this one strikes accord with me.  His racing career however does not.  Having raced almost exclusively on dirt and recently most of the time has been at 7 furlongs and beyond getting some results but tending to fade at the end.  Did win very well at Stakes level over 7 furlongs with a speed of 105 back in May so can run on this track.  Trainer (unlike the previous 2) has wisely brought him back in distance when the horse has been asking for it.  Excellent chance of winning this medium race.  Has everything going for it providing including the fact that he is 2 wins from 2 outings on an off track.

4 CESTRINUS(AUS)  chifley  K Best   3/1

Being Aussie registered this one will naturally win and win well. His last race was exactly that, a win over 7 furlongs at Allowance level and he gets the chance again here at Stakes level to prove he can do it here too.  Has won at this level before and most impressively got a 3rd place finish on an off track over 6.5 furlongs back in May.  Why impressive?  The massive speed of 108 on that day.  Watch out for this one – could easily take this race, swallow it and flush the rest of the field out its backside as it crosses the line.

5 COLTS GONE WILD  westbywest  D Kanski  3/1

At first glance this wone won’t win and doesn’t have any chance.  At second glance my opinion remains unchanged. Loves the distance and has won at allowance level too at this range but this is harder and hasn’t put the massive speeds on show yet although in saying that a 106 speed rating in April is relatively massive.  Bit of an each way bet, could definitely challenge some of these. Known for wild and crazy nights especially just before a race is probably the reason why he has been unsuccessful of late.  That and the fact he is now an 8yo grandpa.
