Breeder’s Bowl Mile

The Breeder’s Cup Turf Mile is simply the biggest and baddest 8 furlong turf race contest in the sim. It separates the good from the truly great and fattens the lucky winner’s earnings purse big time in the process. Last year’s surprise winner The Calling took home the prize in 2009 but was retired in 2010 and now lives on via a 2 yr old filly by Dunkirk named Operation Dynamo. 2008’s winner was the mighty Basketball Jones who leveraged that signature win to Eclipse recognition and possible Hall of Fame immortality. That 2008 race stands out because the champ set the Breeder’s Bowl mile record time of 1:33.20 over that firm California grass. Who will capture the glory this year?
In a first for us laz and I square off in an AIM chat discussion of this year’s field. We are good pals so the insults are flying fast and furious and we primarily lash out at each other. Congrats to all those who managed an entry in today’s race and don’t take any offense at what we say after all you got a horse in the race and we didn’t…

#1 – Stormin Blues

Stormin Blues is the two time Equinics hero and possible Hall of Famer appearing in an impressive 3rd straight BB Turf Mile (finishing 3rd and 6th respectively). Odd prep effort in which he ran wire to wire which is a-typical of his style but I will write that off to being much the best that day. Look for a big effort and a top 3 finish from everyone’s favorite SLOWER LOWER Delawarean.

The thing you have to like about this guy is he brings his biggest performance on the sim’s biggest days… The trainer is no slouch and no doubt is the BEST trainer in Delaware BY FAR!!! Not that that is saying anything… He should go to the front and everyone will know who to catch… Can he lock up his place in immortality? Perhaps

If he goes to the front its bad news for Slower lower there is too much pace he needs to rate

#2 – Derhamm

Derhamm – Three year old Street Sense colt has back to back huge races at 10 furlongs which helped punched his ticket here today but his speeds at 8 furlongs leave me concerned he won’t be fast enough at today’s shorter distance but he should be closing fast and furious late

Wow Street Sense’s buttons are popping off his Derby sweater when he sees this son… 114 in his last and seems to be still getting better… Is 114 not fast enough pal? I bet you wish you had one that could run a 114 yeah i know it was at 10 panels but I think he will like the cut back… tough place for experiments though

114 is plenty fast but note he still didn’t get up even with the extra distance so how is he going to make up ground against proven milers here today. Speaking about not getting up even with help how old are you again pal?

I am worried about the distance too but 3’s often take some time to get there speed figs into competitive range if he likes the distance he will be more dangerous than you with three shots of tequila

Speaking of drinking he did run big at 8 furlongs in the Irish 2000 Guineas so there is some hope but something tells me he will run out of room

#3 – Cape Bojador

Cape Bojador – Henrythenavigator has a stellar first year crop and this colt was so good he didn’t even try turf until his 8th career race. Won his last two graded efforts on an off track but its going to be fast today so that probably discounts his chances a bit. A solid colt but I prefer others since he appears that hybrid sprinter/miler type that is dangerous but a bit short.

Lots of wins on this dance card and lots to like about him to add another one today… his breeding says no problem at a mile and the results say the same… but what happens when you take the crooked number out from behind the G and make the jump up to G1 competition? 11 for 17 itm says use him in your tris for sure… but you’ll leave him out and come up empty like usual. You do know a trifecta pays for the top 3 right?

#4 – Infinite Bling

Welp Lenny is up next and we all now you’ve been gunning for him since preschool. Infinite Bling – Lenny’s 3 yo star by MDO has been good from the get go and has huge scores in the Equinics and French 2000 Guineas among other big wins. 3 yr olds often fire big on BB Day and to think it would be anyone other then him in this race is just being presumptuous.

Well gunning for Lenny is an unhealthy proposition… Luckily whipping you is much easier… this horse started the MDO craze and rightfully so… He also has something to prove against older G1 competition… Maybe its that old habits die hard but i don’t see him here… Lenny will have to win some other race on the card or 5…

#5 – Jumping Down

Jumping Down – Representing NZ for sire Zabeel, talented 3 yr old was a game 5th in last yr’s BB Juvy turf. Is in fine form as evidenced by the G1 win last out and is one of the other big 3 yr old threats in my book.

Another horse that has been jumping around the routes looking for the right fit… These three year olds are filling up the race taking advantage of the hundreds of of extra 3 year old races… I think this one looks a bit like your typical G1 entry… Tsunami anyone?

24-1 feels like value so to me the public is overlooking a live horse that has a better chance to win then some others in here that likely want much longer then today’s mile

Yeah I guess my handicapping isn’t the strongest skill… He does have a G1 win against older… but the rest of his credntials do not feel BB Mile to me…

Fair enough but tough to outright dismiss since he actually does like today’s distance and could really light up a tote board with a social security card needed exotic. Speaking of social security we better move on before you can claim it

#6 – Rock Vegas

Rock Vegas – Finished a better then it looked 9th in last year’s edition of this race so it is impressive that he made it back as few can do that. If he can run back to his July Sunny mile G2 race he is your winner but I have to wonder how he will bounce back from his dirt sprint prep disaster. It has worked before for others however…

Ah finally a horse that looks the part to my eye… has been running the tough ones and comes in off a weird dirt allowance… This was a trick the King mentioned as a way of getting him up for the biggest race of his season… he said he was set at 90 pct for the dirt sprint… of course interesting strategy is well beyond you ken.. and that means understanding not barbies husband that you are busy playing with

Welp thanks for you poor analogy sponsored by Mattel but I have to agree that this Galileo colt definitely could be a sleeper. And for sim breeders out there it seems like just throwing some Blushing Groom with your Galileo is one of the real keys

#7 – Silver Stealth

Next on the list is Silver Stealth a Silver Deputy 4 yr old that has been on a heck of a roll last 3 races including that smashing G1 win last out in the The Queen Liz Stakes. If he can keep it going one more race he is very tough with that tactical speed that will serve him well in this race.

Maybe its my own AARP card coming in the mail but I like all the older ones in here… Great last two races and the right style to make it to the winners circle… Can he make it 4 in a row? Hard feat to achieve on the biggest race day of the year… if he still has one in the chamber he could be the winner

#8 – Slewkeptallvows

Speaking of dedication this next colt’s owner is as dedicated as they come. Have you ever seen anyone support a sire the way Willyam has with Broken Vow? GR Simster member willyam has earned the right to have another stellar Broken Vow colt since he has spent the equivalent of a 3rd world nations GDP breeding them. His trainer says he is expecting a big race and I am rooting for him.

Jeez I have often marveled at how this guy keeps giving sick tries to Broken Vow… I know he has a big stud fee but no one told Mike… this one is an actual front runner and likes to get out there all by his lonesome… Can he do it today or will a vow to will this race be broken… sorry but i say yep… it could be my anti grs prejudice

#9 – Kazimi

Iant probably has pitched a fit every time this Distorted Humor X Deputy Minister X Secretariat colt lined up in a big race and I love this colt for that. Unfortunately, he has been erratic in performance and gives the appearance of wanting 9 furlongs or longer so I will need to pass.

# 10 – Principe De Viana

Ok well you can’t dispute the next candidate Principe De Viana – #1 in the division, 13 lifetime wins and over 5 million in earnings. What’s not to like? A lot potentially looks ever bit a 10 furlongs and over specialist so hard to see how he fits here today. Also concerned about his love of the front end and his poor effort last out in the Roberto Clemente.

He is hoping a cut back in distance helps but the creme de la creme of 10f might have been better served finding one his preferred distance… This medicean x habitat is a pedigree I know many simmers have tried (don’t you have one?) and none have captured the magic in the bottle this guy has… But 8f in this field??? Stranger things have happened… you are married….

#11 – Dooty Da Doo

And now we come to the pace nightmare for any other colts who had aspirations of going wire to wire today. Has shown the ability to rate but he is not going to let anyone have an easy time of it. Very dangerous and versatile despite coming from a somewhat downtrodden sim sire.

Willy’s nightmare comes a calling… Wire to wire hopes may be crushed by locking strides with this genuine 3 year old monster… If I had a thing for younger horses this would be my selection… I prefer fine wines and creaky knees… but man it is hard to get past this one… TM Opera???? everyone take a look at the back end before you try this sire at home…

#12 – Mount Samson

This colt is clearly legit but I have concerns that he has done his best at 9 furlongs or so and may not prefer today’s distance. Reminds me a lot of Kazimi actually in that regard

#13 – Silent and Smooth

Finalfix’s 5 yr old Shamardal colt has won 15 of his lifetime 31 races and he has a three race win streak coming into today’s big event. Would have really upgraded his chances on an off track but he still deserves some consideration today because he has the tactical speed to run his race no matter what pace scenario unfolds. Could be a big win for an under the radar sire.

My favorite rez has another favorite in a big race… Race fans should see who has the faves in the 4 biggest races on the card… Nope its not GRS… This guy might need an extra half a click to get there but unfortunately the race is only 8… can N Linville adjust his odometer in the the biggest race of his career? I hope so!

#14 – Mackinaw Peach
