Speedy Fillies Sprint in Italy

We’ve had a full field of turf sprinters show up for the Grade II Wilted Petal in Italy for 3yo fillies at six furlongs.  The weather looks lovely and the field looks intriguing for this $225,000 race.

Declaration                 Twopine          12/1     Reliable ex-claimer has done reasonably in overnight stakes, but may be pushing it here.  Has done more routing, but has been okay in sprints.  Would take a massive effort for her to score, but she’s a nice filly.

Cytheria                      Worldbeatr      10/1     Solid runner has earned a check in a couple of graded races and has a shot at doing so here.  It would take a big race from her, but it’s not out of the question .

Bloodstream               Repent             8/1       Faltered in a recent graded effort, but is pretty consistent in overnight stakes.  If she runs her race, I’d look for her to make a respectable finish.

Tomato Magic            Toplight           22/1     22/1 is a joke.  This filly’s on fire and here’s your chance to bet on her before everyone else discovers her.  Yes, this is her first stakes, but she’s won all 3 starts since she discovered turf sprints, with bigger speed figs each time.  She still has to prove herself, but she looks like a potential monster in the making and she’s a steal at these odds.  Landed quite a good jock, too.

Seeking a Bird           Tiramisu          22/1     On the other hand, 22/1’s a bit more realistic here.  This filly is no slouch, but she looks like more of an allowance horse.  Would take a huge race from her to hit the board.

My Lady of Malay    Mrblacktie       10/1     On the board 10 of 11 dirt sprints, the only exception being her graded outing two back.  Competitive in overnight stakes and with a good rider aboard, I wouldn’t completely write her off, but she’s going to need a really big race to score in this field.

Tequila Shooter          Sdmf                9/2       Bettors’ favorite landed a jockey with a 27% win rate, which has to be helpful.  Reliable performer at the top level of competition won a Grade I last time out and is looking for blood.  Tends to run her fastest every other race and she’s due for a slower one here, but even when she slows down a step she runs well.  Practically a shoo-in for hitting the board and with  a very good shot at winning.

Starinsky                    Txbred             14/1     With the exception of one on an off track, she’s been pretty disappointing in graded races.  Although she’s good in overnight stakes, she has enough of a record in graded runs that I’m comfortable passing on her.  Certainly capable of running a big one from time to time, though.

Lowlands Lunatic       Zeco                16/1     Barathea filly has been good in allowance company, but hasn’t shown much oomph in stakes.  Better luck next time, I think.

Ash Highway              Socalman        5/1       Bettors’ second choice has run well in graded company, but hasn’t won in a good long while.  Ran on dirt last time out, so may get a boost from switching back to turf.  On the other hand, this may be a smidge shorter than her ideal distance.  Rarely far behind the winners.

Anubis Warrior          Vampire1        5/1       Coming off a trouncing in the mile-long Queen Ascot, she’s shortening up to a distance where she may be more comfortable.  A speedy front runner who is likely to set the tone early and has a very good shot at doing some damage.

Storm Frost                Crashcours      21/1     Only 4 races and a maiden win under her belt, so we don’t know too much about this filly yet.  She could turn out to be terrific, but I haven’t seen enough signs of brilliance to back her enthusiastically against a field this tough. Time will tell.

Lowlands Lucky         Stalfrank         12/1     Runs well against allowance fields, but this is a huge step up for her.  Don’t see her taking on this tough field successfully

I’m going out on a limb and picking the potentially great (potentially not) Tomato Magic for the win, with Tequila Shooter and Ash Highway close behind.
