Adelaide Derby History

Its super Saturday at Queensland this weekend with the running of two Grade Ones and three other stakes races. The Grade Ones are the Adelaide Derby and Oaks. Below is a bit of history on the Derby and tomorrow I will look at the Oaks.

First run in the year 2000 at the Victoria track it was switched to Queensland in 2009, with this years running being the second there. While being run at Victoria two jockeys N Hartel and G Adler have ridden the winner on two occasions. The Race Record is 2m30 run by GLADIATOR owned by veeman4 in 2002.

There are two standout previous winners of the Adelaide Derby, the first being SUNNYBANK MEMORIAL the 2004 winner owned by sunnybank. He went on to win 25 of his 53 starts including 18 Grades Ones and $10.8M in stakes. SUNNYBANK MEMORIES a horse based on the 2004 winner is a stakes winner of eight races and $278K in stakes.

HORSESHOE BAY owned by texasace was the 2005 winner and his 41 start career netted him 22 wins and over $10.2M in stakes including 16 Grade One victories.

Last years winner SPIRIT CHASER owned by harvey has not quite recaptured the form that won him the Derby but two stakes placings at his last three runs may have him returning to the winners list at Grade One level. He has stilled managed to win $508,781 for his 5 wins from 25 starts.
