Rain Expected For The Leo Peters Stakes!
France- The $70,000 Leo Peters Stakes for three-year-olds and up may face some moderate rain Saturday in France. The main dirt course should remain in good condition, but the jockeys may not care for a field of nine throwing mud everywhere along the mile and one eighth trip. Odds for the field range from 2/1 to 21/1.
The 2/1 favorite is Kiki’s Solid Rock. N. Eadens is aboard. The blue-blooded Forty Niner x Danehill x Caerleon colt has done his best work across the green. Switches to the dirt where he has one win in six tries. Not as confident with his main track capabilities despite his big class advantage and will look elsewhere for a winner here.
The Tempest is 3/1 under H. McLean. Son of Forest Wildcat moves from turf to dirt for just his 5th try on the surface. Ran his first four lifetime race on the dirt before making the exclusive switch to the weeds. Has two wins in those four tries both as a freshman. Put up an 89 speed in his last 2yo dirt race and then tried the lawn for an 85 speed win. Might actually like the surface and is worthy of a shot here.
Midlothian Boy is 9/2. R. Stevenson is up. Zieten horse has eleven dirt wins including a wicked 126 speed back in 2004. If he can even run 85% of that race Saturday he’ll win this one for fun. Unfortunately, that was a long time ago and his recent form has been mediocre while sprinting. Should enjoy the stretch to 9F.
Shark Bite is 6/1 with R. Truitt. Aldebaran colt has been racing in open allowance races and has been running out of ground late. Should get a better ride from Truitt, but he hasn’t shown that he can handle this kind of field consistently. Will need a dream trip and a hot pace up front to strike ’em down late.
Also at 6/1 are Silver’s Cream and The Great One, J. Stivers. Son of Silver Deputy has six wins and two seconds in nine starts. Is one for one on the off track and has taken fields a mile and a quarter gate to wire several times. Has big speed numbers to support his record and will be handled by Europe’s best jockey. A great bet at 6/1 and my choice to lead the field til the last few yards.
Sensations is 9/1. R. Kraft is in the irons. Conquistador Cielo horse is a perfect five for five at a route of ground and has six total dirt wins from nine starts. Has tried the off going twice with a win and a third. Has put up three consecutive 100+ speeds while winning his last five races straight after a TWO-YEAR layoff. Extremely sharp in his 2005 season and looks unstoppable at the allowance level. This is his first stakes try.
At 12/1 is Here For The Party. K. Champ gets the call. Son of Hansel has seemingly found his niche as a dirt router. His only two dirt starts have resulted in back to back victories with 107 and 101 speeds. Again, those were both conditioned allowance races, but his late running style may fit perfectly here. Not without a chance.
Sir Long John (AUS) is 16/1 with D. Tate. The son of Viscount (AUS) has eleven career dirt starts with four wins, two seconds and two thirds. His numbers are not good enough to beat this field. He’s going to need his best race to date to hit the board Saturday.
The 21/1 long shot is Trigger Mountain (IRE). M. Cheatham will ride the son of Double Trigger (IRE). As above, this horse is overmatched in this field.
