The Jazz Fest
The Jazz Fest
The Jazz Fest is a race that brings together some of the best 4yo dirt milers in the business. It is a Grade II race run out of Louisiana and with the sun shining it will be run on the fast dirt course. Some high quality colts will be trained to the minute and ready to give it their all in an attempt to be the next name on the silverware. Here are the runners.
1. Island Parade 4/1 (DANSILI (GB) x GONE WEST x STORM CAT)
F Oxon ( 348 – 84 – 66 – 67 – 24% )
This 4yo colt began his career on turf with moderate success. His mother won 6 stakes races on turf and was placed in the money in 13 stakes races with career earnings exceeding $500 000. After moderate turf form early in his career he was switched to the dirt with immediate success improving sharply to win his first 2. Since then he has gone on to win 8 of 14 dirt starts including stakes races and a Grade III last time out with a monster 114. On that form he will be very hard to beat and can be expected to jump and run from the 1 and will be up the front for a long way.
2. Tex Cat 9/2 (STORM CAT x MR. PROSPECTOR x DAMASCUS)
A Jolly ( 316 – 81 – 59 – 45 – 26% )
This regally bred 4yo from the last crop of Storm Cat hasn’t missed a place in 12 career starts. He likes to set the pace in his races and has been ultra consistent in winning 6 of 12 career starts including 2 stakes wins over this distance. This is his first crack at a Graded race and he looks up to it. With champion jockey A Jolly on his back he will look like the winner for a long time and could easily hang on to win.
3. Digital Fairy 15/1 (AGNES DIGITAL x SIR TRISTRAM(IRE) x FAIRY KING)
B Rayam ( 75 – 11 – 8 – 5 – 15% )
Must be considered an outside chance in this field and his price reflects that. Has done well for his connections so far in his career placing in 9 of 19 starts but on speed figures alone looks like he could find this a tough assignment. Has a career best 111 speed figure which would be competitive but hasn’t been as consistent as his competitors and would need to improve sharply to challenge.
4. Chlorinator 7/1 (JOHANNESBURG x MISWAKI x CARSON CITY)
B Moore ( 66 – 9 – 7 – 7 – 14% )
Another very consistent galloper who has placed in 15 of 19 career starts including an impressive fast finishing 2nd last time out over 9f in a Grade III with a 108 speed figure. Based on that performance he could be flashing late but may now be looking for longer than the mile and can expect to be a very good galloper over 10 furlongs in coming months. If the front runners get moving early he may just be giving them too much head start.
5. Altable 8/1 (UNBRIDLED’S SONG x PULPIT x IRISH RIVER(FR))
EN Thomas ( 42 – 2 – 5 – 2 – 5% )
Another on pace runner who has shown good form in previous outings. He has a stakes win and graded placing on his resume and although not consistently running huge numbers he could be expected to improve 2nd up after a short let up. Has a career best 111 speed figure and if can reproduce that he will be a good chance in this.
6. Motion Dismissed 5/1 (LAWYER RON x STORM CAT x BERING(GB))
C Schroeder ( 39 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 8% )
This colt has generally run in allowance races for majority of his career hitting the board in 13 of 18 career races and earning just over $150 000 for connections. He has some good numbers to his name including a 112 last time out when closing late. He has a new jockey on his back for the first time in 5 races and if C Schroeder can get him moving late he could threaten.
7. Mad Rock 19/1 (POLITICAL FORCE x MINESHAFT x THEATRICAL(IRE))
X Turner ( 57 – 4 – 3 – 5 – 7% )
Mad Rock could be struggling in this field. He has just over $50 000 in the bank after 17 career starts and a career best 101 doesn’t look good enough to win this. That being said, connections wouldn’t have brought him here for no reason so they must have an opinion of him.
8. Bostreet 8/1 (STREET CRY (IRE) x BROAD BRUSH x DAMASCUS)
C Morris ( 83 – 10 – 8 – 5 – 12% )
Bostreet usually comes out of the barriers slowly and the wider draw won’t bother him. Generally his jockey gives him time to settle before making a run late and with plenty of pace in this race he could easily be 10 lengths off the leaders at the half mile. A couple of starts back he let go a withering burst to win by a couple of lengths with a huge 112 speed figure, if he can do that agin here he has to be some chance.
9. Mr. Korn 11/1 (COMMANDS (AUS) x MR. PROSPECTOR x SOUTHERN HALO)
P Sullivan ( 188 – 13 – 17 – 18 – 7% )
This Australian bred 4yo colt has had plenty of racing with this being his 25th career start. His strike rate isn’t great winning just 4 of 24 so far but he has produced several solid runs. He tends to get going very late and could be better suited over slightly longer which could be the plan this campaign. Look for him to be finishing off well but in a high quality field I’m not sure he will get close enough to grab his first graded placing.
10. Social Sense 8/1 (STREET SENSE x SKY MESA x UNFUWAIN)
T Campy ( 216 – 21 – 19 – 19 – 10% )
Another ultra consistent front running type who has dashed away from rivals to lead by up to 8 lengths in his recent starts. He is a dual stakes winner who could give them something to chase coming into the final straight and if capable of reproducing his career best 108 speed figure could play a part in the finish.
11. Star Jet 14/1 (STAR OF THE CROP x TRI JET x PIA STAR)
Ma Scott ( 47 – 5 – 3 – 5 – 11% )
This unfashionably bred 4yo colt has been a great money spinner for his connections. His sire Star of the Crop has served just 7 mares in 5 years with this boy by far and away the best performer. He produced a barnstorming run 5 back to just miss in an allowance race over this distance running a huge 117 as a late 3yo. If he could replicate that he would win this by lengths and at the price could be worth a few dollars each way. He is 2nd up after a spell and expected to be improved by his last outing.
A great race bringing together some quality 4 year old colts. Good luck to all runners.
My tips:
1. Island Parade 4/1
2. Tex Cat 9/2
3. Star Jet 14/1
