A Rich Throat is Much Better Than a Poor Guzzle

One mile and a quarter
Fast Dirt
$80,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up

Stakes History:   First year offered

A field of seven fillies and mares will ran the classic distance of a mile and a quarter on Saturday at Louisiana Downs, for the sole purpose of capturing the prize of winning the RICH THROAT Bonanza.

RICH THROAT (Slew O’ Gold x Fabulous Pleasure) was a one time stakes winner in twenty four starts.  She has been busy with four offspring, with none of them reaching sim stardom yet..

As for the 2005 Field for The RICH THROAT Bonanza:

PP1

DISTANT SHADE

Owner-twister

Jockey-F Oxon

Odds 5/1

Ecton Park x Vaguely Noble

A three year old filly that has been in-the money in nine of twelve career starts, she comes into this event on a hot streak.  She is a front runner that has four wins and two place finishes in her last six trips to the starting gate.  She won a gate to wire romp (8 ½) in the Portostone Stakes -in her only trip at one mile and a quarter.

PP2

DESFLY’S GIANT(IRE)

Owner-dessie

Jockey-N Bonkowski

Odds 9/2

Giant’s Causeway x Danzig

Don’t let your first glaze at her last few outings fool you, she has stepped up against some good company and paid the price for it.  At this level, she should be better suited.  This will be her first trip further than ten furlongs, so some question remains.  I would expect her to settle early a few lengths off the pace, and patiently wait for the final half mile drive.

PP3

D’UNOWHOTHEHELLIAM

Owner-alysalley

Jockey-R Shiloh

Odds-16/1

Aptitude x Storm Cat

Looking at the name of this runner, one could say an Aptitude filly with a feisty attitude.  She ships in off of an allowance win, but lacks the performance record to back up her name and mood.  Her gate to wire win may prompt Shiloh to have her near the front, which may play in as a factor to the outcome.

PP4

STORM SECRET

Owner-profounds

Jockey-D Hogin

Odds-7/5

Pulpit x Storm Cat

Even after two straight fifth place finishes, this talented filly is no secret to the rest of the field.  Similar to DESFLY’S GIANT(IRE),  STORM SECRET will be stepping back from some stiff competition, and will probably benefit from that move.  She as yet to test this distance before, but her late running style may serve her well if the pace on the front end is brisk.

PP5

LITTLE OREO

Owner-lgbost

Jockey-C Morris

Odds-12/1

Orientate x Maria’s Mon

A veteran of twenty seven starts, with many at this distance, but she may be stepping up into a tough setting.  If some of the favorites struggle at this distance, then LITTLE OREO may serve as benefactor.

PP6         POINT SYSTEM

Owner-privetdriv

Jockey-T Campy

Odds-11/1

Point Given x A.P. Indy

Won at this distance in a restricted allowance race, but not sure if she can handle this company.  I would expect her to pressure the early leaders, which is even more assurance that front will have some company.

PP7         BREAK DA BANK

Owner-tbonefarms

Jockey-C Snowden

5/2

Spectacular Bid x Hoist The Flag

A former grade II winner, she comes in as the second choice in the morning line.  She has put up the numbers in the past that is impressive enough for serious consideration in this event.  Jockey- Snowden may elect to keep her a bit closer to the pace than in her last two outings.

Nice field, with some of the early favorites testing a new distance.  If any of the falter, there will be some late runners that will pounce on the opportunity.

My selections are:  DESFLY’S GIANT(IRE)  STORM SECRET BREAK DA BANK -deajai
