Stakes winners Deseeker, Royal Troon lead short field at Wisconsin
Wisconsin- A fair $55,000 is up for grabs this week in the Ty’s Birds Challenge for freshmen fillies. The field gathers a few recent stakes winners as well as a couple of maiden special weight winners aiming to scale the black type hurdle. Most of these gals have broken through the 80 SP# barrier.
Favorite Deseeker (2/1) breaks from the far outside. The Dehere daughter has precociously won 4 of her 6 lifetime outings, including a wire to wire stakes score at Arkansas recently. Trained by rockriver2, Deseeker attracts excellent Wisconsin jockey, C. Capper.
The Deseeker/Capper team will likely hook it up with seveii’s Royal Troon (3/1). The Came Home filly enjoys romping on the lead as well and can survive a speed duel on the front end. Royal Troon did just that at Northern Florida last month, surviving a head-an-head scramble to bound away to a 1 1/4 length stakes win over 6f.
Bigsky5’s Mr.Prospector granddaughter Montana Prize (5/1) should lay off the pacesetters’ lead. Montana Prize got caught duking it out over the grass last time out. The filly had previously scored in ALW company from midpack on the dirt. She hasn’t been past 5.5f though and remains the only starter in the group that hasn’t broken 80s SP# yet. Top veteran jockey M. Snider pilots the filly.
The two prospective closers both make their stakes debuts:
- Biker Chick (5/2) broke her maiden over the summer near the pace and then switched tactics, running a surprising second in ALW company from far back. The Hennessy daughter scored a best-of-the-bunch 83 SP# in that runner-up effort. She should appreciate the 7f distance and possible speed duel. Good jockey helps as well for trainer cozyfarms.
- Harvey’s A.P. Indy gal Spirit Of America (3/1) measurably improved in her second start. The filly cruised through Texas MSW traffic to win going away over 7f. The 81 SP# win was an 18 number improvement over her first attempt.
Snowchief’s Picks:
Anything can and will go with the youngsters. This is a good spot for one of the pacesetters to step up in numbers, but I like one of the closers to take this one over 7f.
Win: Biker Chick or Spirit of America
Place: Royal Troon
Show: Deseeker
Good luck to all.
