Curly Q’s Stretch Run Sends Him To Louisville
Halfway through the running of yesterday’s Cal Derby, the fans were wondering if CURLY Q was going ever get started, as he sleepwalked along in last place, almost 14 lengths back of pacesetter PINEAPPLE EXPRESS. Even midway through the far turn, the Curlin colt was still ten lengths back, having just gotten past one horse.
Suddenly, lgbost2y‘s colt unleashed a dramatic run at the top of the lane and zoomed past them all in Silkjy Sullivan-like fashion to collect his ticket to Louisville in this “Derby Lock” race as the fans roared their approval.
16/1 longshot MAMBO HEAT slipped past PINEAPPLE EXPRESS late and grabbed the place money, a length back.
CURLY Q earned a 103 speed figure for his win, in which he stopped the timer in 1:48.3 for the nine furlongs. It was his second consecutive graded-stakes win, and also his 2nd straight 3-digit speed rating.
“It sure is hard on my ticker to see such a late run like that!”, said lgbost2y, a veteran trainer having a banner year as he had two Grade 1 winners yesterday. “It’s been a terrific day for the lgbost stable group.”
