Once again we had quite a race in the third chapter of the Old Man of the Mountain series. The competition at the front end of the race for the Old Man of the Mountain trophy is stronger than it’s ever been. Once again there were five runners with triple digit speed figures this time out. And in the end it was three runners that were already on the board in the OMOTM standings that added to their point totals. The back end of this race wasn.t even close this time as BUBBA’S TALE is easily becoming the Old Man of the Mountain Tail! As I mentioned in my preview, I thought that ALBERTA SAMURAI looked pretty tough and would probably finish in the top three but I didn’t expect him to win which he did and take the lead in the standings. Our host OUR TOWN did well in the first leg of the OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN series V, as he took the second position but he slipped to sixth last time out. He came back this time and finished a solid third . In the Sun Dial portion of our series , SHOW BIZ KID nearly went from the Penthoust to the Outhouse as he was leading a big part of the race and finished next to last. He sure couldn’t get behind BUBBA’S TALE though as he was more than 40 lengths back of the winner and they had to notify him by cell phone that the front end of the race was actually over! That is what makes this series so interesting. It is a long series and horses come and go and gain points for the Old Man of the Mountain series Championship and garner all of the accolades that come with that. Certainly a nice thing to hang on your wall at the Old Horses Retirement Home!

In the race itself, REQUIEM’S BLADE started the race like it was time to give out the Bingo cards at the Senior Citizens center and he wanted to be first in line. He couldn’t keep up the pace though and he slowed at the end to finish back in sixth. Our winner ALBERTA SAMURAI sat in the nine hole early and ran by nearly everyone like he was some young whippersnapper. He’s been looking awfully good in this series and has the overall lead by three over GRAND TYCOON who finished second but just didn’t have enough in the tank after his big race last time out. As mentioned, OUR TOWN finished third to move into third place in the standings.

In a separate part of the race, in what we call the Sun Dial Standings, the race for last place is almost as coveted in the win in this series for AARP card holders. The winner of the Sun Dial Trophy is held in high regard back at the old folks horme. It’s always a lot of fun to see who contends. In the end, we had four horses that finished more than twenty lengths behind our winner. As I mentioned, BUBBA’S TALE came in dead last and barring injury it looks like he will be tough to beat for the Sun Dial season trophy. He is like an anchor out there! SHOW BIZ KID was next to last and newcomer FALSE PROSPECTS fought it out with and STORMZAPPER for the last point in the Sun Dial standings and prevailed.

ALBERTA SAMURAI now has two wins here in the series and should be in the mix for the OMOTM Trophy if he can keep the old bones moving. Former winner If ART HOME and GRAND TYCOON look as if they may have something to say about that. There are seven races left in the ten race series and lots of things can happen including quite a few heart attacks and strokes among the participants, so it should be interesting down the road. That’s what makes this series so much fun.. Stay tuned Race Fans!

Also Rans in the race that didn’t figure in the standings on either end: SUPER EMPIRE, L’ESTASI DELL’ORO, REQUIEM’S BLADE, BIG BUCKLE, XANDER, OLD PULPIT, ANKENY STREET, STORMZAPPER

Best of luck to all of these fine old guys and gals!
