We have a very solid field here this weekend with many entering their first race of 2K10. Several are coming off of Breeders Bowl and DelPenn races and add to a very tough group of ladies. As these girls move to their four and five year campaigns it can frequently set the tone for the entire year and there are several owners and trainers here with hopes of a good outcome. There are a couple of ladies looking to break the $1millon in earnings club so that shows what kind of talent we have here. I’m looking forward to this one so let’s take a look:

1 – BETSY(AUS) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGS RANK Amsterdam Stables 8/1 Amsterdam 21.8% B.Rahill 5 – 0 – 1 – 0 – 0% 110 $ 395,910 68
( ZEDITAVE (AUS) x PURE PRIZE x NUREYEV out of GRINO’S PRIZE) This nice looking chestnut four year old looks to be one of those horses that dominates at every level but the Graded circuit. She has won six Stakes races but has never been able to capture that elusive first Graded win for trainer and owner Amsterdam. She has come close a couple of times but hasn’t been able to close the deal. She seems to always have lesser SPFs in her Graded outings. She is a deep closer that may get too far behind against the better talent. It probably won’t help having Rahill in the saddle as he is still looking for his first win of the year. It may be a challenge here for this team.

( WAR EAGLE x DEPUTY MINISTER x MR. PROSPECTOR out of SUNSTAR) Here is a Louisiana bred five year old that could tear up the local races for a long time to come. She doesn’t look as if she is ready to go the lower levels though as she has won five of her last seven including three Gradeds in that streak. Trainer NewAstin4 has given her a nice rest as this will be her first race since the week before Christmas and she may be ready to continue her streak. A win here would put her over the prestigious $1 million in earnings mark. She is the number two ranked filly and has probably the best jockey at the track guiding in this one. As long as she is ready for her first race of the year, she could be hard to beat.

(ENCOSTA DE LAGO (AUS) x MR. PROSPECTOR x A.P. INDY) As a three year old, this brown mare won three Graded races in her past eight along with a couple of listed Stakes races. She enters her four year old campaign with a credible run in the Breeders Bowl and DelPenn races but a couple of close seventh place finishes if there is such a thing. Those last two races make you wonder if she is ready to step up to the big girls but trainer and owner BeefCake deems her ready and we will get a quick answer here. They have one of the hottest jockeys at the track in Staples who already has gathered ten wins already in this young season. Her stalking style should work well here and it is up to her to see how she competes in this one.

( SEEKING THE GOLD x DANZIG x ALYDAR) This beautifully bred four year old mare looks as if she is just hitting her stride coming in here on a three race win streak including two straight Stakes wins. Her past two were her lifetime best SPFS with a 108 and 110. If she can bump that up again she will compete here in her first race as a four year old. The Super crew has to have high hopes for this girl going into this year and with good reason. She is another stalker that should run just off of the lead and wait for the home stretch. They have jockey Brim in the leather and he is quite capable of bringing this girl home at generous odds.

( DISTORTED HUMOR x MONARCHOS x SEATTLE SLEW out of KARN’S TOUCH) A pretty cream colored five year old mare who has eleven wins but just gathered her very first Stakes win last time out. I’m sure that trainer Sender2 was hoping for some precipitation this weekend as this girl is undefeated in four races on an off track. The weather looks like he won’t cooperate however and it appears that this mare’s fast track speeds may not compete here. They have Bates in the saddle and he has disappointed so far this year with only one winning mount in 30 races. Could be a rough chance at a win here for this crew.

( DIXIELAND BAND x GULCH x CAPOTE out of ENCRYPTOR) It remains to be seen how the long layoff will affect this four year old chestnut mare. She hasn’t raced since before Halloween last October after a couple of races with disappointing speed factors for trainer BigEars. She may or may not need a tune up race before going against this crowd in her first four year old race. She won three Stakes races as a three year old but is still looking for her first Graded win. Simcox is holding the reins and he only has one win so far this year but has finished on the board in nearly a third of his races this year. Hopefully he can get everything out of this girl and get her in the mix.

( VINDICATION x NIJINSKY II x BOLD RULER) Sharing the Morning Line’s favorite roll in this race is this five year old Vindication offspring. She is looking for a win to take her over the $1 million in earning mark and has a real chance here. She has posted her best SPFs to date with a 111 in two of her last three races and has a win and a second in two Grade One races during that streak. The second was in the Breeders Bowl race and she hasn’t races since then which makes you wonder how she will do coming out of the layoff. Trainer Peeps1 is hoping the rest has done her well and she is ready to pick up where she left off. Little used jockey Mo Turner is going to give it a go on only his third mount of the season so he shouldn’t be to weary for this one. The layoff is the key here as to how she will end up as she definitely has the talent.

( AWESOME AGAIN x SEATTLE SLEW x MR. PROSPECTOR) This five year old brown mare is a streaky horse in that she has only had one time when a win wasn’t followed by at least one more. She is on one of those streaks again with two consecutive G3 wins in a row coming in here. Both were rather easy wins, pulling away after charging from last in the field with solid SPF’s of 108 and 110. It appears that trainer and owner Wrecks has her tight and ready to run moving into her four year old season. He also has hot jockey Lewis in the irons and he has nine wins in this young season and know how to bring them home. This could be a tough crew to beat if this girl can keep it up and keep her streak alive.

( SUCCESSFUL APPEAL x KRIS S. x SIR TRISTRAM(IRE)) This five year old hasn’t won a Stakes race since last summer when she won a G2. Since then she has gathered a couple of Allowance wins two back although she finished second in the HALF A WORLD AWAY Stakes last time out with a nice 108 SPF. The Big Oil Conglomerate is moving her up in class here and you have to wonder if she is ready for this crew. Add to that the fact that jockey McGuire is still looking for his first win of the year and you have a worrisome situation in this race. She needs a big race ere to compete and I’m not sure she’s up to it.

( JOHANNESBURG x SADLER’S WELLS x SEATTLE SLEWout of WELL SADDLED) Interesting name and breeding that looks more suited to the grass doesn’t slow this five year old mare down. Her last two races were the Breeders Bowl and the DelPenn where she finished within three lengths of the winner in both races. She doesn’t have a win since a couple of G2s in a row last February and March but she might like the first part of the year as her Maiden win was in March as well. Trainer Nblye and the Jrogue Stables bring her here hoping she still has plenty left for this five year old campaign. They have lightly used jockey Dekeyser in the leather in only his second mount of the year. This is a big race for this crew as that first five year old race can often go either way.

This early in the year can really change things up for the older horses as they enter their fourth or fifth year. Many are just maturing while others may have peaked and are starting down that hill toward retirement. In the fourth spot on my card I have LADY OF LEISURE who is anything but and has the talent to push the leaders here and could easily end up on the board. Another that certainly has the talent to win this race is BLUE LETTER . She has been hot lately and may carry that over to the new year but I have her third on my card. CARING MISS is getting some pub and a lot of folks are picking her as the winner here. It worries me that she hasn’t raced since the Breeders Bowl and although she has a ton of talent, I want to see her run once before I’m ready to anoint her as a G1 winner in my preview. That leaves the win for a hard charging K’S BROKEN DREAM who will pass everyone in the stretch and claim the win. She was really impressive the end of last year and I think it will carry over here.
Good luck to all runners!
