G1, Coalminer Cup
This week we are headed over to Victoria to preview a race on the card this Saturday afternoon, the G1, Coalminer Cup. The race will be restricted to those horses that are 3 years old and older. They will travel a grueling 12 furlongs across the firm turf track to see who can get to the wire first and get a trip over to the winner’s circle. The race has drawn a field of eight nice looking horses that includes several prior G1 winners. The morning line odds and post positions have been released. Let us now take a preview of the eight starters for the G1, Coalminer Cup in Victoria.
| 1 | TEPIDITY | ENG | 5G | moorside | M Arky | 21 | 6 | 67% | $1,981,395 | 304.00 | 4/1 |
Headed out first will be this 5 year old Chestnut Gelding (NEW APPROACH (IRE) x TOO DARN HOT (GB) x SADLER’S WELLS ) that has a couple of graded wins this season to his credit including a win in the G1, Kakarazuka Kinen Cup. In his most recent start, he would head out in California going 11 furlongs in the G2, Del Web Handicap. Fourth out of the gate he would start moving up by the third call. He would put up a chase for the lead in his stretch run but would be held off to cross the wire in second with a 113 speed rating. This horse has looked good this season and expect a late charge down the stretch when he breaks from his gate to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 2 | ZUNA KVASIR | JPN | 6M | musse2 | I Dris | 27 | 10 | 44% | $3,698,700 | 228.00 | 5/1 |
Here we have a 6 year old Brown Horse (KIZUNA x KING KAMEHAMEHA x MONTJEU ) that would find a win back in April in the G1, The Queen’s Spring Cup. His three most recent starts have not been as kind, including his most recent start in Japan. He would travel 9.5 furlongs in a Local Listed Stakes, Bow Fell Stakes. He was well back throughout this race and would cross the wire in eighth with a 105 speed rating. He is in need for a hit on the boards and perhaps the added distance will help him when he heads out representing the European Union Racing Organization residency.
| 3 | FRANKHILL | ENG | 5G | falvelon | D Dowell | 25 | 9 | 68% | $2,826,433 | 264.00 | 5/2 |
Next, we have this 5 year old Bay Gelding (FRANKEL (GB) x DANEHILL x NUREYEV ) that three starts back picked up the win in the G1, Tattersalls Gold. In his most recent start in Surrey, he would go 10.5 furlongs in the G1, Judgemont International. This late closer would hang well back in the early going of the race but would make effort down the final stretch to weave into fourth when he crossed the wire with a 112 speed rating. That is two, fourth place finishes in a row for him and he needs just a little better timing if he is to hit the boards this Saturday representing the Down Under Racing residency.
| 4 | REPERSONATE | JPN | 8M | lightng118 | A Mack | 27 | 6 | 41% | $333,258 | 10.00 | 13/1 |
This is a 8 year old Bay Horse (NOVELLIST x HUSSONET x GHOSTZAPPER ) that is the matriarch of this group that has only one win this season in seven starts and that was in an Allowance race back in January. His most recent start would be in Denmark in a Claiming race, the Twitch Fast Food Wars Week 4 where he went unclaimed. It would be another rough trip for him as he crossed the wire out of the picture in fourteenth place with a 94 speed rating. The senior of the group may find another rough trip if he can’t step up his game when he heads out of the paddock representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 5 | KINGTANGO | ENG | 5M | junedaddy | D Lakencher | 22 | 6 | 55% | $363,457 | 13.00 | 5/1 |
Here we have a 5 year old Bay Horse (FRANKEL (GB) x KINGMAMBO x DEEP IMPACT ) that has made his four most recent starts at the Allowance level and hit the boards in all four of those races. His most recent start was in Germany going 12 furlongs in a $53600 NW2n Allowance race. He ran in his normal style of being close to the front out of the gate in second. By the third call he had nailed this one down. In his stretch run he would leave this field in the dust getting the win by over seven lengths with a 116 speed rating. If he can bring that speed with him this Saturday as he steps back up in class, he could be a threat to this field when he heads out at post time representing the Empire State Racing residency.
| 6 | BORN OF GALILEO | IRE | 5G | jonesstables4 | S L Ledwith | 25 | 6 | 48% | $211,702 | 4.00 | 10/1 |
This is a 5 year old Bay Gelding (BORN TO SEA x GALILEO (IRE) x MONSUN ) that has made the majority of his starts in Claiming races. That is until he jumped up in class in his most recent start in Queensland going 10 furlongs in the G3, Veandercross Stakes. He lingered well back in the early going of this race but would put up effort in his stretch run. It was just too little too late as he just missed hitting the boards in fourth with a 108 speed rating. Showing a little class in that race the owner is giving his horse another opportunity here in Victoria when he heads out of the paddock to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 7 | NIGHT’S CAVALRY | GB | 6G | alibi235 | C Roser | 27 | 10 | 70% | $457,256 | 16.00 | 5/1 |
Next, we will see this 6 year old Bay Gelding (DUBAWI (IRE) x GALILEO (IRE) x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY ) that two starts back would pick up the win in the G2, Kakarazuka Tinen Cup. He is under new ownership in his three most recent starts. He was then sent to Queensland to make the start in the Equinics Gunsynd Stakes. He was in third out of the gate but would start falling well back in his stretch run and would cross the wire in seventh with a 106 speed rating on this wet track listed as “good”. He gets back on the dry firm turf this weekend and the owner is seeking a better effort than his most recent start when he is sent out at post time to the cheers of an excited crowd.
| 8 | KING’S JOURNEY | IRE | 5G | teecefra2 | J Cox | 23 | 7 | 52% | $3,252,673 | 288.00 | 5/1 |
Heading out of the final gate in this race will be this 5 year old Bay Gelding (CAMELOT (GB) x RAINBOW QUEST x DANEHILL ) that back in April would get the in the G1, The 5 Series. His two most recent starts have not been as kind for this front runner. His most recent start would be in Queensland going 12 furlongs on the wet turf in the G1, Equinics Luskin Star Cup. In his normal style he would head straight for the lead out of the gate. But in his stretch run he would break down and cross the wire over thirteen lengths back in sixth with a 105 speed rating. He gets his favorite jockey, J Cox taking the mount for this trip on Saturday when he heads over to his gate representing the Universal Racing Club residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
